i have noticed that if i wake up and eat straight after my workout ( im doing insanity) that i will feel hungry all day and i end up over eating and binging on rubbish. :grumble:
but if i wait and dont eat till as late as possible usually around 11-11-30ish then i eat my normal cals and dont go over the top.
but iv been told so many times that breakfast is really important and if you dont eat soonn after waking it affects your metabolism
is this true?? should i eat earlier?? :indifferent:
thanks

no it's not important - it does not 'kick start your metabolism' as everyone seems to believe. In non-obese people and those who exercise there is evidence to show that metabolic rate while sleeping is at least as high if not higher than resting metabolic rate, so you metabolism doesn't 'slow right down' at night which again everyone claims.
Some people feel the opposite way around that eating breakfast controls their appetite for the day and that's fine but there is no dietary need to eat as soon as you wake up.
you can 'break fast' at any time of the day be it as soon as you wake up or 11am, 1pm or whenever.
this article talks about exactly what you are experiencing.

Hi There,
I'm with you, if I eat first thing I tend to be hungry all day. I usually eat about 10.30 or so after I've dropped the kids to school and done some light exersise. I think if it's working for you and your eating the right amount of calories I wouldn't worry too much.
BTW, what is 'insanity'?

Just listen to your body.
If you're not hungry first thing in the morning, then just eat when you do get hungry.
I eat breakfast because I am really hungry in the morning and that is really the only reason.0 -
If it works for you (eating breakfast) = do it. If it doesn't work = don't do it.
I NEED to eat when I wake up (most days), but can't do "breads/cereals"- or I am famished all day. But have too have protein and fruit as soon as my eyes open, almost.
Some people are fine not eating until 10AM or after they get to work, etc.0 -
I eat breakfast if I'm hungry..if not I don't0

if I eat it I'm hungry again around 10, so I skip it and eat nothing untill I'm hungry (and that is 1-2 pm)0

Funny you mention this. I actually did some research today. My husband and his family do not eat breakfast, and they’re all skinny as bean poles. I am not so lucky.. I have noticed that when I do eat breakfast, I am hungry all day long. So it’s nice to have a little "validation" out there.
Since we are living with his family temporarily, I have been skipping out on breakfast (don’t want to be the only person eating). We have been here for almost two months and I have noticed that I haven’t been eating less throughout the day BUT it feels like I’m losing muscle tone. I’m assuming the two are related.
I did a little research online and webmd and all the other reputable sites state that breakfast is critical…even though my husband stated that he doesn’t know a single thin person who eats breakfast.
SO I’m curious about what others have to say about this topic.0 -
I definitely feel famished all day if I have breakfast and thought it was because it speeded your metabolism!!
I normally get up around 7am and eat breakfast at work at around 10-11am or otherwise I feel sicky.
I can then leave eating my lunch till around 2pm and dinner is always around 6.30pm0 -

I know plenty of thin people that eat breakfast. (and those that don't)
If you feel you are not benefitting from skipping breakfast, change up breakfast. Just start the day with a protein shake- maybe you are not getting enough protein?? Work out- and fuel your workouts!0 -
NO
simple answer... but true, you're body will tell you if and when you need to eat, listen to it thats all I would say.0 -
I find I'm not hungry until later but if I don't eat something I'm fuzzy headed until I do. If I don't have to get up early I don't haha, but when I do I've been trying out eggs and some toast since I've found a pretty good microwave poached eggs method. Seems to be working out ok0

I love breakfast...and I do think it is important in the sense that it gives you the energy to start your day.
That being said, I also think it is equally important to listen to your body and eat when you are hungry. If you don't get hungry until 11am then eat then...that can be your breakfast...or Brunch...or what have you. As long as you are drinking water to keep hydrated and consuming enough calories to get you through the day then I think you are good.0
