Too Much Caffeine?

I know too much caffeine isn't healthy at all, and some might argue to avoid it altogether. My questions is this: Can consuming too much caffeine actually hinder weight loss?

Depends on what you put into it.

I haven't stopped drinking coffee at all. Most days I have 4-6 small cups.

I drink a minimum o 4 cups of strong, black coffee every day..........usually closer to 8 cups.

It's not caused any issues for me
  • I found this article on livestrong:
    http://www.livestrong.com/article/490242-why-does-caffeine-hinder-weight-loss/

although it does say in the beginning "particularly if used in larger quantities"

It increases your metabolism slightly, but it also makes you hungrier, as far as I know. I drink a crapton of caffeine and have lost about 60lbs, so... no?

As long as you're not adding creams and sugar to your coffee it isn't bad for weight loss. I'm sure there could be other health risks from over consumption of caffeine, but then again, what DOESN'T have some adverse problems in excessive quantities?

  • Caffeine like in soda? Then RUN! Caffeine like in tea or black coffee? Not going to harm but can actually help! :)

As I understand it: Caffeine is a diuretic and dehydrates your body. If you drink too much it will dry you out.
Also, caffeine stimulates the nervous system and when the nervous system is in a constant state of stimulation, it will tax the organs and put strain on the body in ways that your body wasn't meant to endure.

Well caffeine is caffeine but if you are drinking soda which is filled full of chemicals and sugars/sodium than it isn't good-period. I am a huge anti-soda advocate. I hear of it doing nothing good for your body and would not recommend it to anyone trying to lose weight, even "no calorie" diet.

If your drinking pop then yes but if it's from a natural source then I think it's okay. Pop even diet can cause a spike in insulin.

Incorrect. That may lead to loneliness, calluses, stains, raw spots, and without a proper way to measure calorie burn, you don't know what you have to eat back to keep yourself out of starvation mode.

I've never heard of it hindering anything other than sleep. One test my doc does is tell me to sit with my eyes closed. If your eyelids are relaxed and still you are OK. If your eyelids are jittery or jumpy you have too much caffeine.

It can affect other things like your stomach, sleep patterns, and your heart rythems. These were my experience anyway. In that case I just backed off and don't drink it in the afternoon.

All things in moderation. I don't think the intent of that comment was that the caffeine was bad, just the additional things that come with the source. Coffee or tea and chocolate are more natural sources of it. Soda introduces a host of other items that cause additional problems.

Caffeine is also found in natural sources like black coffee and tea. From the bean straight to coffee there caffeine without no added substance. However in soda, they add it as a chemical. So there is a difference.

As I understand it: While caffeine is a diuretic it isn't strong enough a diuretic to dehydrate you body so no, you're not going to end up like the guy drinking out of the wrong goblet in "The Holy Grail." It's just another liquid. As far as impacts on the nervous and thereby taxing the organs and strains on the body . . . this I've never heard before and would like more to see some research on it to consider.

I drink coffee most of the day, from the time I roll my *kitten* out of bed until about 2 or 3. Hot or cold it must have 1 sweetner and about 1/8 cup of skim milk. Hasn't done anything to hinder my weight loss.

Snap! I drink very strong black coffee - 2 cups first thing in the morning and then randomly through the day plus the odd cup of tea. I stop at 6pm though otherwise it would keep me awake.
Don't know that it helps or hinders although I realise it's not particularly healthy, I just feel I need it at the moment.
Will deal with the excess caffeine perhaps after I've dealt with the weight loss.

and then there's the benefits of me on caffeine: 1) I won't rip off anyone's head, 2) I'm more likely (but not assured) to not fall asleep in meetings thereby avoiding that humiliation, and 3) I won't rip off anyone's head.
