Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fund raise? Some people I know are trying to raise money for someone to get some specialist treatment and I'd love to contribute if possible, but have no idea where on earth to start! Would love some suggestions!

There are companies that do "vegas nights". Its expensive($3500), but people pay a fee to get in so you can recoup that.
Then all the "money" people gamble is pure income for your charity. I may do this next year for a school.

Good Luck to you and your friend.

a crowd sourcing site like kick starter or indiegogo might be a good options.
or you can hold a stag and doe style party
    or a euchre tournament
or a raffle, have a company donate some prizes and raffle them off.

Softball tournament is always fun. You can give people a 3 home run limit and let them buy more home runs if they want. You'd be amazed at how many people come out of the woodwork for slow pitch softball tourney's. I used to go to them all the time with my ex. He loves them. no matter what people are raising money for he'll do it.

Water balloon fights are fun too. Charge a few cents per balloon then have a "pass the hat" sort of thing after.
