Do you aim to burn a specific number of calories?

I'm 5'4, 164 pounds. A lot of people and websites suggest you should burn around 500 calories per workout. I know it's just a rough estimate or example most of the time, but it worried me because I NEVER burn 500 calories exercising. Usually I burn anywhere from 200-400, depending on what I'm doing and how long I do it for. Should I be aiming to burn more calories than this? Or does it not really matter so long as there's a deficit?

I've consistently burned 400-600 since i've been on here and it has worked for me. Firmly believe if i stuck around 2-300 i wouldn't be where i'm at. I've been at goal weight for some time now. consistently lost 1-3 pounds a week with only a few weeks of no losing. Get your heart rate up by doing jumping jacks first or in intervals of what your doing. Keeping your heart rate in the correct zone for you is the key..in my opinion to burning more calories.
Sometimes we under estimate the calories of what we eat and there you go, 200 hundred calories miscalculated and your weight won't budge. It's hard to miscalculate 4-500 calories.

Good luck! It is sooo worth the effort!

I have never burned more than 300 per workout and I've lost 13 pounds. I get my heart up to 170 or so and just stay there for half an hour. Then I cool down and stretch. I consider today an excellent workout and I burned 280 something.

I just don't like working myself to death. I'll take my results nice and slow if it means that I don't kill myself on the elliptical.
