Does anyone else find the allowable amounts of proteins a bit low?

Go to the Goals tab under home and hit the "change goals" button. You can set your percentages there. I changed mine to 45% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat.

In the USA, the Recommended Daily Allowance for Protein is 0.8 grams per 1 kilo of bodyweight. In the World Health Organisation it is lower.

There's now some very compelling science that points to serious health risks of high protein diets.

High protein diets have shown a strong correlation with an increase in the hormone called IGF-1.

Increases in IGF-1 are associated with significant cancer risks and neurological diseases. IGF-1 has been proven shown to accelerate the growth of cancer cells and also is implicated with accelerated ageing.

Conversely, Humans who are born with IGF-1 deficiency show no signs of cancer or diabetes

Most people don't realise that the average human generates cancer cells all the time. It's just that the body's immune system is quite efficient at controlling them. However, as we get older this immunity breaks down and that's why cancer is predominantly an age related disease.

IGF-1 (Insulin Growth Factor - 1) is a growth hormone and it's very important during youth because it proliferates cell growth. However, once we're mature then cell proliferation is not such a good thing - particularly of cancer cells.

There is also some debate that particular types of protein are worse than others in elevating IGF-1. Milk is typically cited as the worst offender.

Having read many of the science journals - I would summarise as follows:-

If you are relatively young and active, or pregnant - then there's probably no issue of going slighter higher than the RDA. However, if you're older than I would stick to the limits. In addition, I would recommend that you consume no more than 5% of your daily calories from dairy products.
