Many times, we may have a great day as far as eating healthy, getting in our exercise, right up through dinner. But then the after-dinner munchies start to happen. We sit in front of the TV or we get a snack for our kids and we realize that we are eating potato chips, ice cream, chocolate bar, when in reality we didn't even really want it.
That is what this thread is about. For some of us, we make a cut off time that may vary from day to day and decide not to eat anything past that time at all (usually about 2 hours before bed). For other, we may make a resolve to simply not put anything processed in our mouths past that given time and keep everything natural.
Whichever way you do it, please come join us and encourage us and be motivated to keep your day healthy even past dinnertime.

Well, I did 4/7 last week. So my goal this week is to make at least 5/7. I've gotten really off track lately, but I'm resolved to do really good for the next two weeks. Why two weeks? Because it's a short-term goal and one where after two weeks of healthier eating I should be able to see a difference inside, if not outside.
Thank you lovely ladies for all your support. See you on the board0 -
Here I am, again! While keeping the official cut-off at 9, I might challenge myself to go for 8:30, when we're not going out.
Lulabelle, I know you can do it, I've seen you sticking to it before. So get back on track, will ya? :flowerforyou:0 -

I'm on it!!! Keep on me. I'll be interested to hear how your personal challenge goes.0 -
Usually I am out of calories by that time, LOL! Unless I had excersied that day, so usually snacking is not a option. I fell off the wagon on Thursday by going out to eat with a friend for Mexican and didn't get back in control until yesterday when I stepped on the scale and I had went up 6 pounds. Wow, I thought that is crazy I worked so hard to take it off and now I am going to just let it pile back on! I don't think so! So now I am so back on this plan. If I can do it, you can for sure do it, Trust Me!!!! Good luck with this week!0

This week is to keep track of how many successful night I have. My workweek goal (Sun-Thur) is 730 pm and weekends is NLT 9, prefer 8pm. Right now I do not have any command functions, so I definitely think I will be able to stick to it. We'll see.
Lulabelle: I know you can do it, you've do it before.0 -

So far (well, just one night) - really well . Tonight's Tue, but I'll keep on trying for 8:30 for tomorrow on.0 -
I have the same issue and just started the program. What both my husband and I like are the Yoplait Fruit Smoothies. They fill you up. They were also on the Biggest Loser a few weeks back.0

 Yeah, one night of success. And even had a few calories left over. Stuck inside all day in the snow makes me have the munchies, but I actually had self-control. Let's see if I can do it again tonight when I'm home all alone and no one to monitor me :blushing:0

Here's for your self-control: :flowerforyou:. You are a strong-willed lady, I knew you could stay strong if you wanted!
As for tonight, I am there to watch you! :glasses: So beware  .0 -
  SUCCESS.
Tonight was hard as I was home alone, snowed in, and had the munchies. So I actually just went to bed at 8 when after my cutoff of 7, I kept wanting to munch. Good thing I did though because two separate strangers called me at 1 a.m. and after the second call I couldn't get back to sleep.
Another snowed in day all by my little lonesome. Going to try and get some kind of exercise in and will NOT eat past 7 p.m. (probably going to bed at 6 p.m. at this rate).
Thanks Dewdrop. You're the greatest.0 -
Lulabelle: Being bored and snowed it does make you hungry. It was funny, because just last night my mom was telling me how she wanted to bake brownies, just because she was bored. I am glad that she over came her urge, because she too was home alone.
Dewdrop: you are pure encouragement!
As for me: I am happy to admit, the ice cream is GONE and out of STOCK! Last night was successfuly by time, but by what I ate is a different story. I went with a friend to get his truck detailed, and then had chicken wings for dinner. Need not to mention, this is the same friend that told me to eat fruit one time because it was healthier. Anyway, I think I worked off my 3 chicken legs this morning doing suicides in the gym. Tomorrow is my weigh in day, I did a sneak peak yesterday, so far, its a good number. Have my fingers and toes crossed.0 -
Lulabelle, so proud of ya!Dewdrop: you are pure encouragement!
She did all that work by herself, teetee . Plus, I am just paying her back for the support she gave me :blushing: .
You're doing really well yourself! Just please survive the gym, we need you here. Here's an idea to get over the icecream blues  : yogurt smoothie!
A few tsp of frozen berries, 1/2 a banana,a few Tbs of yogurt (I used vanilla, plain should be healthier but might need a bit of sugar or maybe honey, if that works). If you have it, add some fresh juice (orange, apple) - I used the one from the berries, since they were defrosted. Blend. Enjoy .
As for me: I ate well around 6 p.m. and had a cookie at 7 and guess what? I only had watter when I came back after 9. Hurray! :drinker:
Ladies, I start to believe we can do this!0 -
Dewdrop: That smoothie sounds good, and I actually have a bag of frozen fruit, so all I need is the yogart. That just might be my weekend treat. Yummy!
I did survive the gym my workout was great. I was running suicides, short sprints to and from lines on the basketball courts, then jogging a quarter of a mile.0 -
  I AM BEGGING YOU TO LET ME JOIN THIS GROUP!!!!!!!! late night JUNK snacking is my downfall!!!!!!! Once Hubby is in bed and I have a chance to watch my tv shows that I like I find that I head for the kitchen to get some water and the next thing I know I am snacking on god KNOWS WHAT!!!!!!!!
HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!! :frown: :frown: :frown:0 -
sdwelk11, welcome! How about brushing your teeth right when your hubs goes to bed?
Also, if you are like me, don't tell yourself "I'll just have one apple". Cos the acid in the apple will ask for a slice of bread with butter and then, since you blew it anyhow, you'll go ahead and have a little bit of ice cream, too. :ohwell:
Instead, once you had dinner make yourself a nice cup of tea and sip on that only :smokin: . If you fancy something from the kitchen, remind yourself that tomorrow is another day. At first, the habbit of munching while watching the shows will call for something from the fridge, but once you get used to focusing just on what you see on the screen, you'll be fine.
Trust yourself, you can do it! :flowerforyou: Just prepare to fight this evil :glasses: . Good luck! and remember to report each day. If you feel frustrated at any point, feel free to read my previous posts, to see how many times I have fallen and got up again .0 -

Thanks. I am going to try the teeth brushing thing. That might help and after that I will make some mint tea. I will make it really hot so I drink it nice and slow and see how that goes...
Thanks for letting me join too:bigsmile:0 -

Although I felt like I was watching the clock, and about 5 o'clock starting munching because I knew 7 was coming up. I'm a little tired of snow now and being stuck in. Haven't been able to get formal exercising in for a week now, and shoveling snow is getting OLD.
Will make better food choices today.
Hope everyone was successful :flowerforyou:0 -
Hello,
I am both new to MFP (two weeks) and new to this group.
I am the biggest late night snacker you will find. I will give yesterday for an example. Very healthy day - Innocent Smoothie for breakfast, apple at 11, chicken sandwich and salad with 1 peice bacon for lunch, dinner prawn stir fry. Everything was great I was in my 1200 calorie allowance.. THEN... Low Fat hot chocolate, a chocolate bar, a bag of popcorn and three biscuits, all eaten while sitting on the couch watching desperate housewives - cannot get out of this routine!!!!
Literally the minute I finish my dinner my thoughts come around to what chocolate do I have in the house that I can eat..
I just have such a sweet tooth - it is easier to curb the cravings during the day time when I am busy but I like relaxing in front of the tv in the evenings, and wish I could do this with out thinking about junk food, and then binging on it!
Tonight for example, all my girlfriends will come over for a dvd night - I am sure there will be a lot of junk food brought. I was thinking of maybe buying a big carton of grapes to distract me?
Really looking forward to hearing advise!0 -
justycrusty - I think your suggestion of grapes is a good one. Make yourself eat them one at a time, maybe half at a time. Something that also helps me is peppermint tea (has to be strong). I drink it after my cutoff time or when there are yummies around with the kids, and it helps me feel like I've just brushed my teeth (without having to do it 20 times) and the water can be filling. You'll do great. Thanks for joining us. There's a challenge every week with great support.
Another suggestion? Think of a reward you can give yourself tomorrow for accomplishing this small goal tonight. An incentive might be good0 -
Thanks Lulabelle, I like the idea of reward tomorrow - I will deserve my glass of wine!
I am 5"5 and just under 60 kilos, I don't really need to loose weight I just like the idea of being really healthy - I feel so guilty every morning when I wake up and remember all the cookies / choc I ate the night before. I vow not to do it again the next night, but yet again, when it comes to couch time - I always seem to be in exactly the same position.
Hopefully the grapes will work - it seems to be all or nothing for me - if there is a lot of bars etc infront of me that the girls bring, if I eat one, i will not stop. Fingers crossed!0 -
lulabelle, well done! You know what? - I love snow . 'Specially when it comes after rain, which is... my least favourite, let's say . I know you feel kinda trapped, but would you rather have puddles all over?
Also, great advice that you gave justycrusty - which is most welcome to join us, btw! :flowerforyou:. justycrusty, one more suggestion: if one chocolate bar is really really inviting, set it aside for the next day. Sweets are not good for us anyway, but at least have them before 4p.m. or 6p.m at the latest.. It sounds to me like you are eating really really well throughout the day.
My turn, now - I did not have food past 7:30 last night. Wow, this is going really well . Tonight it's girl's night, though, so I'm allowing myself to go by my official cut-off and tomorow there's a party, so maybe 9:30 is just as reasonable.0 -

One more thing my daughter taught me about the grapes. If you put them in the freezer, then you will definitely eat them slower and they are kind of like a frozen sweet treat. Yummy.0 -

Wow you two are good at this, no eating at all after 7.30? Impressive!!
It's nice to talk to people with a healthy, supportive attitude.
Thanks for the advise.. As soon as I finish work I am going to go straight to the shop, buy 2 cartons of grapes - one for this evening and one for freezer!0 -
I did it!!!! Last night was night 1 of no JUNK snacking for me. Hubby went out with a friend for dinner and I made mine and ate around 5:30 and then at about 6:30 I had a jello Mousse temptations for my evening snack (It was frozen and tasted like soft serve ice cream to me). Hubby went to bed at 7pm and I went and brushed my teeth. I made me a steaming hot cup of Strawberry chocolate Decaf tea (from Cost Plus) and sipped away until bedtime at 9pm.
Yea Me!!!!!!
Thanks to DEWDROP for the tooth brushing advice and hot tea idea!! This seems to work for me0 -

I'm going to count last night as a success even though I didn't finish dinner until 8 p.m. My hubby had been gone for three days plowing snow and it was when he finally came home. But just a salad. And no biscotti for dessert with everyone else.
justycrusty - how did your movie night go?
dewdrop - hope you had fun on your girls night?
sdwelk11 - Absolutely yea YOU. That's awesome. Great job. Strawberry chocolate decaf tea huh? Sounds delish.0 -
Wow weldone everybody, that is fantastic - you have great willpower.
Ok, being honest, I did not do as well as you guys - however I didn't do as bad as I usually would?!! Eek.. here goes...
I had a nice prawn noodle dinner to fill me before the girls came over. I ate mostly grapes but after an hour or so had 2 of the tiny kid size packs of maltesers, and some fizzy sweets - I wasn''t too far over my calorie allowance. Am a bit dissapointed but it is definitely a bit of an imporovement from the usual - at least I avoided the crisps, and usually I would eat a lot more choc!
I don't know if you guys do lent? Where I live (Dublin, Ireland) most people give up the thing they find hardest for lent, right up until Easter Sunday. So, for me, I will be giving up sweets, chocolate, biscuits, ice cream, crisps... I will be allowed popcorn and diet coke. Me and my mum did it last year, so there was no junk in the house. Once lent was over we pretty much kept that up - if we wanted something bad, we would have to get up, get dressed, out into the cold to the shop - the idea of all that often beat the cravings! So anyway, I am not overly worried about last night, as I know from Wednesday on I will be junk free - it is gonna be tough!!!!
Lulabelle, salad for dinner is fantastic, do you just have a garden type salad, or do you add any substinance to it? I make a delish salad at home, with roasted pine nuts and a little feta and bacon - I think I would go to bed hungry without those additions!0 -

Justycrusty - You did great! It's the small changes little by little that make huge lifestyle changes. Lent is big here in the US too, although I personally don't partake in that particular celebration. I'm impressed and proud that you and your mom together gave up sweets for those 40 days. I wish you success on the upcoming participation. You can do it!0 -
justycrusty, no dissapointments allowed in this team . Just moving forward. Plus, you did well, you took a step forward. :flowerforyou: You know, starting a challenge when you have an event (movies, going out, parties) is really challenging, especially for self confidence. Also, as someone noticed on the boards here, whereas smoking is something you can completely give up, not the same can be said about food. So it's tough!
As to the lent, yeah, I'm in for that one too, and plan to join the "no more sweets" team. I'd love it if you'd join us there too.sdwelk11 - Absolutely yea YOU. That's awesome. Great job. Strawberry chocolate decaf tea huh? Sounds delish.
I second that, girl! Awesome start! :flowerforyou:dewdrop - hope you had fun on your girls night?
I had a very pleasant evening. I think I had the last bite aroung 8:30, but I was definitely already on the way home at 9. So hurray!
Now, tonight's party only kicks off at 8. And you know how it's like when you're the guest - the decision when food is served does not belong to you. So I'm going for 9:30 (I'd be happy to be in bed by 12, so 9:30 seems decent) and might have a sip of juice a bit later than that (but fter 9:30 no refill ). Might sound strict, but I really believe that I can shift the fun from mounching to making nice conversation
lulabelle, last night was definitely a success for you! You served desert but did not touch it? You are a true example. :drinker:
In one sentence: team, I believe we are doing great, aren't we? Let's keep up the good work and stick together .0 -
yeah me!!!!!!!!! 2 days in a row with no late night snacks!!!!!!!! So far so good. This teeth brushing and Hot tea idea seems to be working its magic for me.:bigsmile:0
