Saw that on TV last night...very real! Goes away in 24 hours when your body absorbs the saline. You form a big pocket of saline with an injection then they push in their thumb and you get a saline donut hole for a forehead.....

I saw this yesterday. I personally think it looks ridiculous. But thank God it's temporary.

Come on bro, don't be a showoff. Go find an ice-cream-cone head and leave these ones for the beginners.

Not my thing, but I never really get "art" anyhow lol. I'd much prefer to spend my time in photo booths, male maid caf'es and cosplaying if I were in Japan haha.
  • LoL. This is a real thing. It's also not strictly Japanese, and it's been around for a long time :)

I find it interesting how the news articles are calling the people who are doing it "hipsters." They don't look like hipsters to me. Just people who are into modern alternative punk stuff. They always come up with new ways to be "different" in a way that the mainstream will look at them funny.
  • Here's an article - It's been around since the 1990s and may have started in Canada

    http://www.vancouverobserver.com/blogs/tmi/japanese-confused-worldwide-bagel-head-trend

Can't find information about this "trend" on most-any reliable Japanese news source. Just moved from Japan, never heard of such a thing much less seen such a thing.

Japan is a country of CONFORMITY, the complete opposite of all these weird stereotypes. If you want an idea of the real Japan, I recommend the drama "14 year old mother" (14歳の母). The girl gets pregnant, and as a result the mother's coworkers suddenly pretend not to know her, the father gets demoted (the reason why most Japanese women stop working after getting pregnant is not just because of social stigma, but because they will often be demoted upon re-arrival to the workplace), housewives stand in front of their house and gossip/laugh at the 14 year old. The 5 (?) year old brother is relentlessly picked on, the girl is kicked out of school, etc. This is an extreme example, but it's quite easy to become an outcast in Japan.

As for conformity and face, walk into a Japanese bookstore, and buy a book. They should ask you if you want them to wrap the cover (hide it) so people don't know what you are reading. Lots of Japanese "video" stores are actually porn shops (many with child-related products, but everybody just pretends it is not there). Clothing stores frequently have numbers on the clothing numbering top 10 or 20 most popular items in order. If you eat out, it is important for every single person to be in unison such as "This looks tasty." "Yeah, right?" "Yeah. Very tasty." So if you ever hear about "weird trends" in Japan, take it with a grain of salt -- most likely not trending.
