Reality Check

Well reality has finally set in. I suck. I was outside yesterday playing tag with my daughter. We were playing for like 10 or 15 minutes and I was winded. I know I am a big guy, but I have always been able to do what I wanted. Now I am 40 years old, pushing 41. I need to get into shape or I am not going to be able to keep up with my kids. I don't want to be a sideline father. I want to be able to get out there and play soccer, basketball, hide and seek, tag, anything my daughters want to play. I want to be there. Right now, I don't feel like I can. I don't like that feeling. My daughters aren't old enough to see that there father isn't superman.

Today is Oct 1st. I turn 41 on Nov. 1st. I am at 317.8 lbs today. I want to be in the 200's by my birthday. I know that is losing a bit to fast, and I won't be extremely disappointed if I don't make it because of that. But, that is my goal for this month.

What's your plan? What is your specific goal? Have all that at the ready, if not then it's just lip service. Get fired up to do this, do it for you. Be selfish! You have to, how many 300lb + old men do you see out there.... not many. Fight baby!

You can do it. Just break it down into small goals and have a plan. It's not gonna happen just bc you want it to- you gotta make it happen. Good luck!!

Stick to a healthy diet, serious exercise, and maybe some green tea for energy, and you may be closer to your goal than your think. Good luck!!

Awesome motivation to lose, and you'll probably start losing weight quickly when you commit, but if I understand correctly you are setting a goal of 18+ pounds in 4 weeks which is probably setting yourself up for failure from the start. Set specific, realistic goals and work from there.

Well, I understand your feeling (though I'm younger and haven't got children yet, but what you wrote is precisely what I'm scared of if I don't change my habits)

Even if your goal is hard (but not impossible), I hope you will do your best to reach it
  • You can absolutely do this!! You are definitely in the right spot to get started! Yeah, losing over 20lbs in a month is a tough goal, but it's definitely achievable if you are smart about it. Plus, if you fire up a workout routine and start eating healthy, the pounds will start dropping really quickly!

I agree with Utica - have a very specific goal in mind, and don't make it too crazy.. be realistic! Also, get others involved! Have a challenge with friends, or people at work.. that always helps to stay on track!

I would talk with your wife or a significant other as well.. let them know what you're trying to do and why.. they'll support you 100% and do whatever they can to help you meet your goal!

Best of luck to you! Feel free to add me :)

Sounds like you have a plan and that is a good start. It wont be easy but it is really worth it. I restarted today also. My goal is to loose 20 pounds by January 1st. Like you my wake up call was going to grandparents day and had to walk up 2 flights of steps and my upper thighs were burning and I was out of breath. That did it ! Got up at 4 this morning and went to the gym for and hour class of cardio. Stick with it and good luck:)

welcome! you can do it!! my advice, stick to the calories per day they give you here at MFP, eat back your exercise calories if you set lifestyle to sedentary, and drink water! water is a miracle drug in my opinion when it comes to losing weight. i drink 72 oz minimum every single day.

I wish you all the best ... I turned 40 10 days ago and really want to loose 21 pounds by Christmas, as I hate being over weight. Mine is delayed baby weight (she turns 2 at christmas) so have no excuse now.

Good luck and keep sharing so we can see your progress and support you

Weight plays tricks on your mind. Think thin be thin........so I am doing everything I can to accelerate my loss....

I started a 40 day course of HCG and B12 shots 14 days ago and as of this morning, have lost 14.6 lbs.!! I know folks will bash me for taking the "easy" way to the loss but I am the type of person who needs to get the weight off quick and then my mindset changes. Some people are wired different and need to go through this long tedious process of rediscovering themselves. All power to them. Doesn't work for me.

If you can afford $400 then I would strongly urge you to investigate HCG and B12 shots.....it is advocated by every homeopathic doctor in the US....it will help readjust your hypothalmus gland (sp?) which regulates how your body expends fat and energy.

If I told you you could be down 40 lbs in 6 weeks wouldn't you try it?

Like you, I have a 3 year old daughter who is the most active thing. We live in South Florida close to Fort Lauderdale so are always outside. We have a pool and there is also a playground down the street. My daughter is always doing one of those 2 things so I need to quickly be able to lose more weight and take her to the park without feeling like I am going to faint after 10 mins.

Sometimes its about the journey in your mind, not the time it takes you to lsoe the weight. Best of luck!

I started out bigger than you. For us big guys the weight will just pour off at the very beginning. Change the foods you are eating...no fast food, no junk food...eat clean and healthy. Stay on track with what MFP says for calorie loss and you will anil the 200's by months end. Get some cardio worked into your day. Start out at 15 mins a day for a few times a week. (remember you can eat more when you excercise more) I am currently getting some cardio in every single day of the week. I look forward to it now. At the beginning I had trouble mustering up the mindset to finish a 15 - 20 minute workout for 3 days a week. Good luck. Train the brain....your body will follow.
  • Thanks for all the responses. My wife is really on board. She has joined WW and is trying to go that route. But, she wants to start eating healthier. I know that 20 lbs in 4 weeks. Like I said I won't be disappointed if I don't get it. But, I am also going to try my best to do it. I know my stumbling blocks. I am going to do everything to get them out of the way and get this done.

I am also really concerned that my wife and I, but especially me are setting a bad example of eating habits for my children. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. I don't want finicky eaters. I want to show them that health eating is better for you and taste good too.

If I was a guy and it meant taking an artificial hormone that women create naturally in pregnancy and paying $400 for it then I definitely wouldn't want to try it.

So if you are a guy taking HCG and you took a pregnancy test would you get a positive?????

To the OP - Best of luck! I have two young boys and a step son and I can totally relate about wanting to be able to run around with them and enjoy life. I've lost 42lbs, it has taken me since December but it's been amazing. I can now go jogging, I can carry my boys and run around with them all day long (and still have 35lbs to go). I've built muscle and got so much fitter and healthier. You can do it!

Set a long term goal and stay focused.

I made a lifestyle change for similar reasons, I need to stay in shape to keep up with the grand kids. I'm pushing 50. I started at 306 with a goal of losing 100lbs. in a year. I completed the goal in eleven months and my fitness improvement is progressing well. If I can do it you can do it. I think it's great that you put thought into how the positive changes in your life will affect your kids. That's a mindset that will keep you going strong.

Like I said, to each his own. I don't bash other people's methods. I know what works for me and what doesn't.

HCG is known as the pregnancy hormone but is naturally occurring in ALL HUMANS. As we age your body produces less of it causing irregularities in your hypothalamus gland, which regulates fat and energy. The HCG protocol is a short period method to reset the gland and help you increase your metabolic rate, which in turn helps you burn more fat.
