Stress Makes Me Hungry

So I've already eaten my breakfast but I just realized something that is causing me stress. I realize that when I feel this way I normally pop something in my mouth to eat.
Trying to break this habit today. So I am deliberately waiting a few minutes and doing some breathing exercises so that I can break this horrible habit. I will see how it goes. I'm sad, but I don't want to make matters worse by doing things that I know are wrong for my body.:explode: :grumble:

I know exactly what you mean. This is a really tough thing to break, because it can be hard to pinpoint the moment that it is happening.
Right now, I got hit with a lot of work, found an apartment, and I am trying to get my finances in order. It's so easy to put myself on the back burner when so much is going on!
I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't know what to do either. I am having so much trouble staying motivated right now. At the very least I can say that you are not the only one, and eventually you will figure it out if you don't give up.
Wishing you happy scale days and stress-free mornings! :flowerforyou:0 -
I can identify! I am a stress/emotional eater. I know it is really difficult, but you can do it. Maybe get up and take a short walk or something to help the feeling pass. You can beat this!0

I know I'm stressed when I go through half a pack of gum in a day
I drink decaf tea or coffee, too, so it's sortof like eating something but with about 3 calories.0 -
oh me too. I try to eat a healthy snack, but it gives me a lot of grief.0

I think what you mean to say is not that stress makes you hungry...but that stress makes you eat. They are two very different things. It's great that you've made the connection that stress is a factor in bad eating habits, because once you're aware of the issue you can (and are) do something to relieve the stress in a manner other than eating.
I know this sounds cliche' but exercise really does relieve stress. Going out and taking a brisk walk, running, working out, dancing, playing with the kids, whatever allows you to burn some energy will help burn off some of those chemicals that your body produces when you get stressed.
Win-Win situation...you burn off the stress without eating, and get some exercise in too.
I say this being a recovering stress eater myself...."Hello, my name is Chris and I'm a stress eater" "HI CHRIS"0 -
Try telling yourself: Food is fuel, not therapy.0

If you can actually find the moment you begin to feel stressed set some smaller goals for yourself of things that you need to accomplish and when you are feeling stressed tackle these activities. If you can stimulate the logical portion of your brain during stress situations you are less likely to obey the cravings of the emotional side of your brain. However, if you must snack during stressful times, eat something healthy, trail mix, fresh fruits, veggies. Stay away from the empty calorie highcarbohydrate and fat foods that we tend to crave during stressful situations. This will avoid the vicious cycle of eating what is not healthy then feeling guilty or upset with yourself for consuming it...which then will add additional stress on you. Also a great and supportive system helps in times like these. I hope that this advice helps a little bit.0

You just described ME!!! I despise that about myself but recognizing it is a step in the right direction. I had a moment of stress yesterday but I overcame it by focusing on something positive. Sometimes, you have to trick yourself...LOL0 -

I try to turn to water when I KNOW for a fact it's my emotions and not my body. So far it seems to help.0 -
I heard this quote once and have it posted by my computer, sometimes it helps:
"If hunger is not the problem, food is not the solution"0 -

Stress causes the hunger hormones to increase, so does not enough sleep. It's nearly impossible to combat. You either have to find a way to reduce the stress or sometimes a good strategy is to not be on a calorie deficit during stress. Sometimes just maintaining is a good strategy because it keeps you steady instead of doing a yo-yo with eating and going backwards. This is a race that the slow turtle wins.0 -
Stay positive. I find that going for a walk helps alleviate my stress. (I am a very anxious person.) Best of Luck to you!0

Chewing gum helps me. It gives me the satisfaction of gnawing angrily on something.0
