Many times, we may have a great day as far as eating healthy, getting in our exercise, right up through dinner. But then the after-dinner munchies start to happen. We sit in front of the TV or we get a snack for our kids and we realize that we are eating potato chips, ice cream, chocolate bar, when in reality we didn't even really want it.
That is what this thread is about. For some of us, we make a cut off time that may vary from day to day and decide not to eat anything past that time at all (usually about 2 hours before bed). For other, we may make a resolve to simply not put anything processed in our mouths past that given time and keep everything natural.
Whichever way you do it, please come join us and encourage us and be motivated to keep your day healthy even past dinnertime.

This was my biggest problem. It's the reason I didn't lose so many times before. I'd be perfect all day with my diet and then after dinner, I blew it. I just made the decision when I joined MFP that I would allot a certain amount of cals for a snack (usually 100 or so). I measured out my crackers or w/e and stuck to it. After awhile I started adding those cals to my dinner and cut out the snack altogether. Now I've completely kicked the habit of late night snacking. I try to save 500-600 for dinner and then eat by 6. I have tea and water at night to keep me from being hungry after dinner. Late night snacking is just a habit like any other and we must kick this destructive habit however we need to.0

Trying to go for 8:30 this week.
Tue's different and the weekend cut-off is to be set spontaneuous, as I do not yet have the weekend planned.
Good luck, everyone!0 -
Going for 7 tonight. Expecting to be stuck at home alone again as there will be snow and hubby will be working. But I am stocked up on my peppermint tea and trader joe's diet creamy root beer, so I should be okay. Definitely need to get to the gym as lately first thing in the morning I have such terrible munchies. Cabin fever?
Keep doing great everyone.

Sticking to my usual for the weeknights: 730. Tonight I just finished dinner, but I will be drinking tea later, because I really have this feeling that I might get hungry. I think I cheated myself on portion of chicken :frown: so it was really a small serving once it cooked. Why is it necessary for it to shrink when it cooks? :grumble: Actually here's a quick question: if the serving size says 4ozs for a frozen piece of chicken, but doesn't say cooked or not, should I assume that is 4 ozs cooked or before cooking? If you say cooked, then I have been cheating myself for a while! :noway:
Thanks for the comment about the new pic, Lulabelle. That is actually like the first full body once since I started this lifestyle change. (I won't say journey, because journeys end!)
Justycrusty: (from the last week post) Your right about the bike riding, it did burn a lot of calories, but it made my tush hurt so bad! Don't think I could make a regular habit of it.0 -
I slipped I slipped! I finished eating, but had a co-worker ask for a plate. And course requested cornbread. I'm not use to a gas stove and the top was browning too quick, so I ate a piece to see if it was done. I love Jiffy cornbread, I was a sucker for the smell of it cookingand I ate it...
I couldn't edit my last post.0 -
Special K should become your new best friend!! If I still feel hungry after dinner, I just eat a bowl and with skim milk it comes to only 165 calories and 0 grams of fat, and the one with Red Berries is very good!
Also eating fruit with it can curb hunger even more!0 -
 Success one for this week. Eight days straight.0

I may be doing it wrong but I weigh my chicken after it cooks for a 4 oz serving. My fish, I weigh after it's been defrosted but fish doesn't really shrink as much.0

On the other hand, why does it say in the database "4 oz frozen"? How much it'll be after cooking, depends on how you prepare it: roasted, boiled etc. Maybe the differences aren't huge, but still, fried meat shrinks a lot!
I am bothered by "1 cup". I never really know if they mean about 8oz (I know, I know, 8fl oz is not the same as 8oz ) or the quantity that fits into a cup (say, a cup of rice is roughly a bowl of cooked rice). So I tend to go by the second or estimate by eye if I had a cup or so of something.
Last night was good for me. By a few minutes, but again I got home shortly before my cut-off :ohwell:. This made me realize again that if it weren't for this challenge, I'd eat more than I have to. What I mean is that when I stopped eating I did not feel full, actually was even worried that I might be hungy in a little while, but I was really OK when I went to bed, more than 2hrs later.0 -

:flowerforyou: Keep up the good work!0 -
Another night to add to my list of no late night junking!!!!!!!!
That's 5 days in a row!!!!
Yea Me!!!! It's getting so much easier too.0 -
My husband came home at 7 p.m. and started making dinner, but it was extremely healthy with a salad, some beans, and asparagus, and I was done by 8 p.m. with nothing after, so I am counting it as a success. Day number 9 for me.0

sdwelk and lulabelle, so proud of you!
Teetee, waiting for your report - your tiny slip is in fact also a success: you did not eat the whole thing, did you? Also, did not have anything afterwards, or did you? How many days in a row till now? Make it a challenge to beat this number next time.
Remember that Tue was my one night of eating past my cut-off, because I get home late? Well, last night I ate at 6:30 when I left and... only had water when I got back home :drinker: Yeay! Number of days are in my signature
To the newcomers, should there be any: we also count the number of days in the actual challenge, so do not let yourself discouraged by our numbers. That's just on a personal level, but each week is a new start, where everyone is welcome!0 -
hey guys,
LENT BEGINS TODAY!! No sweets or chocolate or crisps or icecream.. for 6 weeks!
Thrilled - actually so excited to get back on the healthy buzz....
Plan for Day 1: Breakfast glass of smoothie and cuppa tea, lunch tuna salad, 3pm snack - bag of manhattan popcorn, dinner - left over batter (2 pancakes) with light philadelphia! And that is it!
have you guys tried manhattan popcorn? it is the best snack ever - takes forever to eat and only 135 cals (21 carbs though..)
So I fell off te ladder for teh last few days but now an back and am here for good!
Lulabelle, how long have you been at this for? You seem a pro!0 -
Lulabelle, how long have you been at this for? You seem a pro!
I started this I think about 3 or 4 months ago. But Dewdrop has been doing it longer and I think was there for the original challenges way back when. Definitely not a pro, as I have lately been eating too much in the beginning of the day, so thank goodness I'm not eating late too. Trial and error everyday.
Do well on your six week challenge. I know you can do it!0 -
I do real good all day but then after 6 it seems that I just want to eat more. I'm not hungry it's just in my head. I wish I could get it out of my head but that is when everyone wants to snack and it looks good so a bite won't hurt but it isn't just a bite I have to have more. I need HELP.:explode:0

aisser,
For most of us, it's not just about eating in general, but about what we are eating. Maybe a good rule of thumb to start out is to stop eating 2 hours before bedtime. Make a time that is not too strict, but comfortable for you. You can always adjust it as you get used to it.
Some suggestions? Peppermint tea. Brushing your teeth. An alarm going off reminding you of the time.
Welcome. We are all here to encourage each other.0 -
But Dewdrop has been doing it longer and I think was there for the original challenges way back when.
This challenge has been up (under various names) for about 15 months already . Since starting it, I encouraged people to take the lead and I might've missed a few months, but I keep coming back to it. .0 -
Hi-
I'm a little late to your weekly challenge, but I'd love to join. dewdrop sent me the link. She had started the original monthly challenge and I had kept it going for a few months and then I fell by the wayside. I'm back to mfp and started a monthly no late night snacking challenge for the month of Feb. Dewdrop suggested joining forces and I think it's a great idea.
So, I'd like to join your weekly challenge and simultaneously I'll keep track for the whole month on the February challenge which is on a different thread (don't know how to link it, but please look for it and everyone is welcome to join at any time).
My cut-off is 9:30 p.m. except for special occasions/evenings out and then it's 11:30 pm (roughly 2 hours before bed). I have made it through Day 1 and tonight will be my Day 2!

Welcome Zaza! I am pretty new to this, just starting to get the hang of it.
Day one going awesomely, except that I had a caprisun for a little snack and then realised it is full of carbs??! Very confusing. Trial and error I guess!0 -
WOOHOO!! DAY 6 COMPLETED!!!!!!!!!!!! YEA ME!!!!!!  :bigsmile:0
-
Thanks dewdrop! I think you're pretty special too.:flowerforyou:
I look forward to getting to know everyone else as well. This thread is very motivating (as is the monthly one that dewdrop linked). I need this accountability. I hope to see Wanda on here too. She did so well on the monthly challenges.
Good luck everyone. Stay strong!!

Welcome ZaZa!
Sorry I been MIA. I only ate 2 little pieces and nothing else afterwards. I'm not really sure how many nights in a row, but I think my last slip was back in January. Tuesday and Wednesday night were great. I've actually been done with dinner around 630-700pm. So that actually gives me about 1/2 hour to have a something sweet too. Yesterday I was under my calories, so I ate a slice of Peanut butter and bread along with my dinner, just so that I would eat more that 1200 calories.
Now, the NEW challenge for me: My loving hubby sent me girl scout cookies! And my favorite kind too. So, I've decided that I will eat them as treats to myself not to exceed the calories that i gained from workout that day. Because normally I do not eat my workout calories, so I figured with that method, if I want a cookie or two, I'll have to workout! My challenge is too really stick to that concept, and of course all this completed before 730pm. Well its my weekend for me, so 9pm.0 -
I think I'm up to 10 straight nights.0
-
I made it through 2 nights! It's a start so I'm happy.0
-
Last night I was home shortly before 8:30, so I figured it's reasonable (as lulabelle noticed, I'm trying to be reasonable ) to accept again 9 as my cut-off. I did finish by 9 and had nothing afterwords. Today I might have to accept 9:30 , will see. All decent food, you understand - no junk .0
-
Hi all-
Tonight is my Day 3 and I'm feeling pretty confident that I won't snack past my 9:30 cut-off. I just needed to get the right mindset and a challenge so that I would be accountable. I'm leaving the kitchen area now and going to watch the Olympics. No more calories for me tonight!
Good luck everyone!!
Zaza0 -
Not to bad tonight when everyone was having cherry cheesecake I ate a few grapes:happy: was happy with the grapes and it satified my cravings.ate them around 8 but don't usualy get to bed before 10:30 or 11 anyway friday is my weigh in day like that so if I mess up over the weekend I still have enough time to get back on track. I ate an orange last night so guess thats 2 nights for me. The night before wasn't good for me I had a rootbeer float:sad: Iwent to see my brother he had been in a bad accident they let him out for a couple hours and it was late coming home and my family decided to stop at A&W for a float I couldn't resist.:explode:0
-
Date night with my baby boy, so done at 8 p.m. (although really wanted something sweet when I got home), so that is 11 nights for me
Tonight is "date night" with hubby so 9 p.m. and party tomorrow night, also 9 p.m., then I think I'm going to switch to 7:30 as my normal starting on Sunday.
Have a great weekend everyone!0
