Food for energy (running)

So I've just started back at the gym after an injury and I've fallen into the trap of fueling up on pure, refined sugar in the form of sweets before my work out. Can anyone give me some ideas for foods that are equally as effective (bananas don't work for me) and are easily digestible as sweets? I'm pretty sure there's something out there that's easier on my conscious..

I usually have fruit and coffee before a morning run.
For long runs I have an english muffin or toast with peanut butter and take gels, jelly beans or honey stinger wafers for a boost along the way - usually only for runs getting up towards 2 hours though.
Depending on how long you are running for, there may be no need for an extra snack before hand. If it's later in the day, just make sure you have plenty of water and a decent meal a few hours before.0
