Any tips for new runners??

I've always wished i could run but I've always been really terrible at it, so yesterday i just went "hey, so what?" so I'm going to try running! :) I just got back from a little bit of running, like maybe 5 minutes? and tips to help me get better? :)

Get fitted for a good pair of shoes. It can make all of the difference, trust me. Also - ease into it, don't expect to become a Marathon runner over night. Look into the C25K program, it's really awesome. Good luck.

Agree with all below - I will add one key ingredient. PEER PRESSURE. Sign up for a 5K (at some later date) and tell all your friends and Facebook friends your goal. Every now and then post something on it - as well as here with your friends. I guarantee you it is a real motivator. Tell the world your time and that you finished. You WILL want to do it again and better. BEST of luck! :)

Proper running shoes properly fitted for your running stride and then use Couch to 5K (C25K) as a training guide to get you to running your first uninterrupted 3.1 miles. It's how I got started and how many, many others got started and it is proven effective. Speed is not a factor, the goal is to improve your endurance so run or jog slow enough that your energy will carry you through and you meet the goal in each workout. Three workouts each week, day off in between, I ran Sun, Tue and Thur so I could have my Fridays and Saturdays for other recreation. If you just couldn't get the workout right one week there is no reason why you can't repeat a week. Here is a link for the C25K http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml . If you have a smart phone there are free apps available for this program. Good luck. In a few weeks you WILL be a running machine!
