How can I tone and lift heavy without bulking up ?

I used to have a hard time finding shirts that fit my arms. I cursed clothing designers because shirts that fit my chest and waist were too small in the sleeves. I even got STUCK inside a shirt in the dressing room and was in tears trying to get it off. I wore a lot of sleeveless shirts so I didn't have to worry about it.
But that wasn't because my arms were muscular. They were just chubby.
NOW... I WANT to wear sleeveless shirts because my arms look kind of awesome.0 -

Focus on changing your lifestyle in such a way that you have the knowledge and habits to eat well and exercise well for the rest of your life. Being afraid of bulking up is not even remotely an issue you have to worry about. That's like being afraid of accepting a job because you fear you will become a millionaire.
Got to agree with this. Educate yourself. You'll hear alot of stuff on these forums. Some good advice, some bad advice. But ALWAYS follow it up with your own research.0 -
Why don't you just put her on ignore if it bothers you that much? That's what I do when people annoy me.
It's not so much an annoyance factor is not wanting people duped into believing they need to do a complex and expensive program to get results.
And it would be a lot more believable that she wasn't paid by the company if her picture wasn't on the product and her blog wasn't just a collection of links to the product.0 -

So I've never really looked at her links before, but now going through them, I don't see any blatant promotion of a company. Just lots of pics of her. Seems more vanity than anything. Am I missing something. Note that I have short attention span so I didn't actually ready much, just skimmed.
it's in her profile. This is a trick that gets used often. They promote "themselves" and lure people to see their profile where they put links to the program that they owe all their success to.
Without looking at her page...what's wrong with that? I promote MFP because it's where my success came from.
Also, to OP...Lift heavy and hard. You won't get big from it. But you also must focus on losing fat- when I was overweight, i started to put on weight from lifting heavy and got frustrated and quit. Then I ate a 1200 cal diet for two years, got thin, then started lifting heavy..again, the scale went up, but the measurements went down. So i truly believe lifting heavy is key to success. The only way you'd be "big" muscularly is if you have a genetic preidsposition to it- like high testosterone levels (rare, but happens) or just genes for big calves (like that other girl said)....but you will be the most amazing YOU ever! And that's what god gave ya, so rock that shizz!0 -

eat at a deficit. You won't gain muscle if you aren't eating at a surplus.0

i lift really heavy and my leg muscles are not huge. it actually allowed me to burn more fat lifting heavier, so my skinny jeans fit me better even though my muscles got a little bigger. There was more fat down there than I originally thought :-)0

you aren't going to put on that amount of muscle from lifting heavy.
it takes a ton of work to gain amounts of muscle like that, and if you're eating in a deficit to lose weight, it won't be a problem.
EXACTLY. It worked for me. I'm not big. lose fat so muscles show, lift heavy, light, changing it up, lift weight a lot, for years, and the muscle develops but does not get big if you are natural.

i lift really heavy and my leg muscles are not huge. it actually allowed me to burn more fat lifting heavier, so my skinny jeans fit me better even though my muscles got a little bigger. There was more fat down there than I originally thought :-)

I'm pretty sure the only people who can't wear boots zipped up and need special shirts are the ones who are out of shape and overweight.
Pretty sure you're wrong. I know a lot of women who are fit, healthy, and well within their BMI range that have difficulty finding boots that fit their calves because of their genetics.0 -
Unless your planning to do steroids, heavy weight training for hours daily you aren't going to bulk up. First of all women aren't pre-disposed to BULK. This requires serious dedication (and roids)
Weight training will just streamline your body, make it more compact and trim. I've been weight training for ....well lets see I've been married 23 years, so at least 23 years (my husband is big into weight lifting). I'm a size 2...I don't buy any special clothes to fit me, except that they are a real size 2 (not a department store size..they're too big). You can tell I haven't bulked up a bit and that is from normally weight training 45-1 hour 3x per week and some years I was doing more than that and doing pyramid training (starting light with lots of reps, then going heavier with fewer reps, then back down again). I've worked out with CATHE and she can kick some hiney on weight training; she's an animal. I'm pretty strong for a 5'2" gal. Yes, I can do a pull up - 5 in fact.
I do have a problem with knee high boots t hat zip; I do have large calves...but then as someone else mentioned; this is a hereditary thing, even before I ever lifted a weight I couldn't wear the zip up boots to my knees....well I never found any I liked that would actually zip. :laugh: My calves have trimmed down some...we'll see I'm more interested in cowgirl boots :bigsmile:0 -

Don't belive the LIES in this thread, anyone who tells you to lift heavy is just trying to trick you. Really anything other than PINK colored weights will bulk you like the hulk.0

this is me. normal BMI, ideal body fat percentage for my gender and age group, but big muscular calves. But then again if I had little calves, my beastly quads would look stupid. I don't take any steroids or anything like that. It is genetics - my aunt has the same body frame as I do. The way I look at it is others can work years and years to get legs like mine :-P I just look for tall boots with "wide calf" and they zip up just fine.0 -

Heres what i learned: Lifting heavy doesn't make you bulky. Being fat makes you bulky.
Lift heavy and diet til you're not fat then see what you think of the results. But when you're at 30% or more fat, getting ripped is not the thing to worry about.0 -

That's right. Lifting heavy won't necessarily bulk you up. In fact your diet has a bigger effect on how your body develops when you train. So if you eat a lot of protein and lift heavy, then you probably will bulk up. The key is to eat for weight loss even if you lift heavy. That should get you toned without bulking you up.0

You're a woman. You won't bulk unless you jug protein shakes and take steroids.
Edit: I lift heavy. I'm also size 2 and nowhere near bulky.0
