Eggs? Eat ALL the Eggs?

I eat only 1 egg yolk a day. What is the current science on egg consumption - cholesterol still the devil or is it safe?

    From the Harvard site..

Long vilified by well-meaning doctors and scientists for their high cholesterol content, eggs are now making a bit of a comeback. While it's true that egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol—and so may weakly affect blood cholesterol levels—eggs also contain nutrients that may help lower the risk for heart disease, including protein, vitamins B12 and D, riboflavin, and folate.

A solid body of research shows that for most people, cholesterol in food has a much smaller effect on blood levels of total cholesterol and harmful LDL cholesterol than does the mix of fats in the diet. Recent research has shown that moderate egg consumption—up to one a day—does not increase heart disease risk in healthy individuals (1, 2) and can be part of a healthy diet. (Make sure to store eggs in the fridge and cook them until the whites and yolks are firm, to prevent food-borne illness. For more tips on how to reduce your risk of salmonella from eggs, visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's website.)

People who have difficulty controlling their total and LDL cholesterol may want to be cautious about eating egg yolks and instead choose foods made with egg whites. The same is true for people with diabetes. In the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, heart disease risk was increased among men and women with diabetes who ate one or more eggs a day. (1) For people who have diabetes and heart disease, it is best to limit egg consumption to no more than three yolks per week.

This research doesn't give the green light to daily three-egg omelets. While a 2008 report from the ongoing Physicians' Health Study supports the idea that eating an egg a day is generally safe for the heart, it also suggests that going much beyond that could increase the risk for heart failure later in life. (3) You also need to pay attention to the "trimmings" that come with your eggs. To your cardiovascular system, scrambled eggs, salsa, and a whole wheat English muffin are a far different meal than scrambled eggs with cheese, sausages, home fries, and white toast.

With or without the cholesterol factor, I'd still only eat one egg yolk. Just to save on calories. Plus, egg whites with one yolk is the best!

I eat 2-3 every morning and I've eaten as many as 5 for breakfast at a time. My cholesterol is between 114 and 130 every time I have it checked. All numbers are in the right range/area. My family does have a history of cholesterol problems and I have found all natural ways to keep it down. No cholesterol meds in over 4 years. Exercise daily, proper nutrition and you will be fine. I've read studies where they are now saying that the fat/cholesterol in eggs is good for you. Where as I've grown up as eggs are bad for cholesterol. I'm proof that eating eggs daily, yolk and all, is perfectly fine unless you have a severe health condition or something.

    So eat more chicken (eggs)!!!

I planned on having 7 as a complimentary snack to my dinner tonight, but I decided to cut three out and use the calories on an additional serving of ice cream.

I love eggs. Whole eggs. The only time I have egg white only is when I eat meringue.

They just had this on the news this morning. They said if you do not have any health issues with eggs, you can eat up to 6 eggs a week but it all depends on how you make them. You can eat all the egg white you want because the bad stuff is in the yolk. Come to think of it, I hardly eat eggs....hmmmm.

Speaking of eggs, I managed to explode one yesterday. I was trying to boil it in not much water and got distracted enough with my daughter that I let the water boil down to nothing... Pretty ditzy.

Oh my goodness THANK YOU. I am terrible at peeling eggs. This is like that time I found out if you hack the pit in an avocado hard enough with the knife and twist, it comes right out. Life-changing (no, I don't get out much. Why do you ask?)

"bad stuff"? There's nothing "bad" in an egg yolk. The yolk is actually where all the good stuff is. The fat and vitamins and some of the protein. I eat at least a dozen a week and my lipids are awesome.

Oh, and for the OP, eggs, like any other food, are just fine in moderation, yolks and all! I have seen anywhere from 4-12 whole eggs a week are good for you, posted on different websites, depending on your health. Same as salt, its fine in moderation, but too much can be a bad thing. Hmmm, come to think of it, almost all foods have that stipulation.

People forget that there is good cholesterol that helps keep bad cholesterol in check. If these studies are done in the US, then I always look at them critically because there is, unfortunately, an inordinate amount of politics involved in food/drug studies in America. :frown:

With a healthy lifestyle...eat as many as you want ;) Eggs are one of my favorite foods! I do try to get them fresh locally or stock up on the organic ones in the grocery store when on sale.

That's the only reason I clicked it too. Considering the OP has a tendency to flame and get his threads locked.

Also, you can eat as many eggs as your heart desires. As long as it fits your macros.

My decision to stick to egg whites over whole eggs has a calorie to protein ratio. If you can budget whole eggs into your calories go for it. :)
  • I'm surprised to see that many people still don't understand that the cholesterol in your food DOESN'T go to your arteries... healthy fats are good for your body and your heart... saturated fat is your friend! I eat at least a dozen a week. It's trans fats, processed foods, and sugar-laden junk that's bad for you. Not wholesome eggs. Eat the whole darn thing.
