I know I am a smoker, but I wont smoke at least an hour before I go to run, and everytime I do it, my time differs when I try to run a mile....if i can't run a full mile I will at least power walk, and then sprint and go back and forth that way....any tips (besides the obvious NO SMOKING? lol)

Just keep running. From February to now, I've shaved about a minute off my time. Just by running more often and further I got faster. Just keep at it.

For me.. Fastest mile was 7:45 min mile. Slowest probably 12 min mile which is going up a steep hilly route.

I used to smoke and try to run. When I quit, it took awhile but now I can run 12 miles :)

The only way I could build up my runs was to use a c25k program. It's an ap that I put on my phone that started me out running short distances and walking in between. Gradually, it builds you up to running more and walking less, so that by the time you finish the program you can run for 30 minutes at a time. This took 9 weeks on the program I used.

I finished the program and ran my first 5k a few weeks ago, and now I'm running 50 minutes at a time... about 4.5 miles during my run.

I don't smoke though, so I can't comment on that aspect of it.

Do the C25K (Couch to 5K) program to get yourself running. There are apps for it and the original can be found at coolrunning.com

I agree, do a training app. In 6 wks I've gone from just walking to running 3 miles in 40 min. That's a huge accomplishment for me! Keep it up and don't give up!

wow i am going to have to try this C25K, it sounds awesome!!! I try not to over do it because i did injure myself badly a couple of years ago and i'm only 22, and my knees pop, get sharp pains, and on occasion give out....but i would love to run...i'm pretty healthy but when i try to push myself i'm scared im going to push too hard!!! :noway:

In my opinion, all the more reason to start off with intervals and work your way up.

Start slow and build up. Also, build strength in your legs. Leg press or squats and lunges! I've had knee problems for years. Due to some past injuries and being extremely weak when I started working out again early in the year my worse knee would pop (knee cap momentarily popping out and instantly back in when my foot struck the ground) when trying to run. Stopped trying to run and worked on building strength up for a few months. Started running in late March / early April. First it was hard to slowly jog (~12 min / mile) more than 1/4 mile straight. Set a goal to run my first ever 5k in early July and signed up for a race. Ended up running my first 5k in June, 2 weeks earlier than planned. Now I have run two 5k's, one 10k, am signed up for a 10k trail run this coming weekend, and am considering a half marathon. I found for myself that signing up for (paying for) a race has kept me motivated and pushing my training. Set clear, defined goals and drive towards them.

I'm doing Run For GOD, which has the same type of training schedule as C25K. I have adapted it a little bit. One week you run 8 minutes and the next 20. It was too much for me. So, I decided to try to up my time by 2 minutes each time I ran. When I started about 8 weeks ago, I could barely run 1 minute at a time. Now, I'm up to 14! I really do recommend the program!

This...I found the hat circuit training and weight lifting really helped me increase strength in my legs and lungs...I went from running a 10 minute mile to 8:24 within the last 2 months.

Circuit training helped more than my running training (similar to the C25K but for a 10km distance).
See what works for you :)

A ten minute mile is pretty darn good!!! I used to run that, but after foot surgery, I'm running a 12 minute mile-slow, but better than nothin'!
