Sweets

How do I satisfy my sweet cravings? I try to eat healthy, and I workout all of the time, but I am hooked on Chocolate chip cookies(chips ahoy of course), hostess cupcakes, donuts, cinnamon buns, and although not sweet, Doritos and all kinds of chips especially salt and vinegar. Any suggestions on how I can curb my cravings?

If you workout everyday, there is no problem on eating a moderated amount of sweets! I do that and have no issues and I just workout 3 times per week.

I have a several addiction to chocolate chip cookies (is the only one in fact), so, the day I'll go to run, I use to eat half package (9 cookies) with a coffee as afternoon snack.

Just avoid eating a big bag of doritos (or just buy the small size) AND the cookies AND the cupcakes the sameday.

fruit. after a few days of no refined sugar you can appreciate just how sweet the natural sugars are.

Do you have a whole foods near you?

They sell bags of mini meringue cookies that are like 110 calories for 13 of them. They are delicious and 5-6 of them are more than satisfying. They are a little pricey...like $5 for a bag that has like 3.5 servings.

I agree with the people who said to enjoy them in small servings.

If you're looking for healthy substitutions, there are some very tasty recipes for whole-grain chocolate chip cookies. I really loved chocolate chip wheetabix cereal but it sadly seems to have gone off the market :ohwell:

Most of the popular chip flavours come in "baked" or "puffed" versions now. I love salt and vinegar chips too!

I recently tried some Kale chips from Bulk Barn. They are very tasty (I had Texas BBQ and Bombay curry) but also very pricey.

For me, once I can stay away from processed carbs and refined sugars for about a week the cravings just go away. The first week is a struggle though and you just have to get through it. You look awesome though, so whatever you do has been working.

I get in those modes sometimes too. If you can just go a few days without any of that stuff the cravings seem to ease up. The longer you go the better. It is hard I must say but try the cold turkey approach.
  • Moderation is key. I also try to substitute things that are a bit healthier but might get me that save flavor I'm craving.

Instead of chocolate chip cookies, I like to eat Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie muffins. They are more filling, use whole wheat flour and oatmeal as opposed to white flour and applesauce to reduce the amount of fat. Not exactly a light food but better for you than a bag of cookies in my opinion.

Warmed up, they taste like a chocolate cookie exploded in your mouth :)

I'm posting the recipe on my blog in case anyone is interested.

I've been eating dark chocolate covered almonds, they seem to do it for me and are not that bad for you. Just have to be careful to keep it to one serving.

Go 'cold turkey'. The when you do indulge some will be incredibly sweet, others salty, etc. Some will still be too nice and others you will savour. That's when you know it's worthwhile to indulge once in a while. Gotta go without for a while tho.

    Sex after the sweets
  • 3-4 almonds and 1/2 glass of water when you have a graving should do the trick...

also try some dried fruit such as apricots, cherries and figs...

if you need to eat something chocky try a 2-finger Kit-Kat... I used to have one a day with the blessing of my dietician and that helped me overcome my chocaholic syndrome... :D

but remember!... never buy a whole packet of those because you tend to put your fingers in the cookie jar more than once a day...
  • eat them. who says you can't have them?

Snack Wells has several types of treats that are in 100-130 calorie packs.
I also have a sugar addiction...found that if I gave up cold turkey for a week or two it wasn't as bad when I came back and I had an easier time eating in moderation. Interestingly enough on www.fitsugar.com there is a list of 25 things that you do that keep you overweight and not occasionally indulging is on that list. I am a firm believer that I need to occasionally indulge and as long as I stay within my calories for the day, I am OK. Trying to not ever have a cupcake, chocolate chip cookie, Hostess treat, etc. is not only setting me up for a binge but just plain wrong!! LOL
  • Thanks everybody, very helpful suggestions.
  • Oh God, I need these tips too. I've never really been a sweet person but the past couple of weeks have been terrible, just out of nowhere. :noway:

I tend to eat a lot of fruit for snacking. Either that or some form of nuts. I'm not really a big fan but they're filling and not really that bad for you anyway, so it's fine with me.

I find if you get some GOOd chocolate like, bittersweet godiva. a little bit goes a LOOOONg way. It's so rich the sweet craving is satisfied after just a bites of the chocolate. Then you don't have the cookie part to add the carbs.
Plus I keep a can of whipped cream in the fridge for the 20 calorie squirt when i just need a quick fix!

LOL.. ya your outside sure looks healthy... but all that junk goin in your inside isnt healthy!
I vote all things in moderation.. but some peeps get a lil and want more and more...
so your call on what you can 'handle' sometimes I try to buy like individual stuff (like a small pack of individual oreos or chips ahow vs whole box sitting on your counter! same w/chips.. and go for lighter versions.. and when your having a craving.. have it WITH something else.. healthier so you eat less of the crap?? idk lol
