10lbs = 1 size?

I was "complaining" today to a co-worker about how all of my clothes are too big, because of my knee problems, shopping was the last thing I wanted to do. She told me that for every 10lbs you lose, you go down 1 size, which would mean I'm now a size 14 (I've lost 41 lbs total). Has anyone heard this?

For me, I would say more like 15 pounds.0

Not always...Depends on a lot of things...I GAINED:drinker: 8lbs and went down a pant size after I started lifting heavy weights...0
-
I've heard it-- it's not always true for me but it's a good guide for when I should start trying smaller clothes. I was a 12 when I started this (actually buying my first size 12 pants is what started me wanting to get healthier) but I still wear 8 or 10 despite being 30 lbs lighter.0

I would imagine that it all depends on your body type and where you lose weight from first. For me, I'm at 12 lbs and while my bottoms feel much better now than they did when I first started, my next size down is still snugg.0
-
No...The first 50 lbs = 1 pant size. Now it's much smaller than 50 lbs, obviously, but I have no idea now. I didn't really keep track.0
-
It depends on your body shape and how much you have to lose. It took me about 20 pounds before I went down each size, and I'm losing off the top a lot faster than the bottom, so my shirts are changing sizes much quicker. I've noticed that it's getting closer to every 15 pounds now that I'm closer to 300 instead of 357.
My friend, who weighs 120 now, has been changing sizes about every 5-7 pounds because she's a lot thinner and has a smaller frame. When she was closer to 200, she dropped a size every 10-12 pounds.0 -
It probly depeds on each person. I have lost 28 pounds and Ive only dropped 1 size so far.0
-
I have not found this to be true. Sometimes I lost more than that before going down a size. After adding in weight training I went down a size after losing only 2 pounds on the scale. Depends on your body composition changes.0
-
No...The first 50 lbs = 1 pant size.
Totally wrong for me... I've only lost 26lbs and I've lost ~2 pants sizes. I was a 14-16 (US 10-12) before, now I'm a 10-12 (US 6-8)0 -
I can lose 5lbs and go down a size if I am weight lifting.0
-
Everyone is different but for us shorties the math is about right. I went from a 16-18 down to a 10-12 with only a 30lbs loss0
-
I agree with astrampe, not always...I gained 10lbs and stayed the same size, my clothes just fit a lot better.0
-
That's not exactly true...that's very general and it really depends on your body type. I lost 35 lbs and I dropped almost 6 sizes....per the 10 lbs rule I should have lost 60 lbs, but I still "really" dropped that many sizes. I say almost because the size I was wearing was too tight and I needed to move up a size but that's when I refused and got serious about losing weight.....I dropped down 5 sizes, but the size I'm at now was very loose and I almost need to go to the next size below (almost a 14 to almost a 0) - you do the math.0

It also depends on where you're starting from, no offense to other posters but if you're starting as a size 8, then losing 20 pounds might get you 2 pants sizes. If however you're starting at 12 or a 14, it might take a little more. it really depends on your body composition and size. if you can't make it to the stores maybe try online shopping and a tape measure? not being sarcastic here seriously! most stores will allow free in store or online returns! Good luck!0

I think it depends on the person. I have a very small frame and I put on 15 pounds which translated to 3 sizes on me. Also I think the smaller the sizes get the less weight to fluctuate between them from what I've seen.0
-
That's been roughly true for me, but reality is it all depends on what brand you're buying, what item you're buying (I'm a 4 in jeans but a 6 in dresses), and where you've lost the weight from. Use the 10lb suggestion as a starting point and try on a size 14, but pick up a 12 and a 16 as well.0
-
I have lost 23 and the next size down which is a 10 is still too tight. But the 12's are falling off me.0

14-15 lbs for me0
-
Nope...I think its different for everyone.
I was a big 6, small 8 at the start - went down to a comfortable 6. My weight has not budged for 6 months but in the last month I've \gone down to a very comfortable sz4. So no weight loss = loss in size. go figure0 -
For me each dress size is 21lbs approx.
I know the weight range I need to be for all my dress sizes right back to my now goal weight.
And of course here in the UK there isn't a standard dress size measurement for the stores to stick to, so you could be a size 16 in one and a 14 or 18 in another....not very helpful really!0 -
I think it depends upon the size you are to begin with. I was super-morbidly obese. 10 lbs. didn't do much to change my clothes size. Took more like 30 lbs. to go down a size. But I do believe for those people with not so much to lose, 10 lbs can make a great different in what size they wear.0

Totally agree, but in my case, starting at a size 32, it took about 40 pounds to get to a 28... it is all relative to the size you start at. When you're smaller, 10 pounds mean more. At my biggest, I am sure I could fluctuate 10 pounds and not notice myself!
Happy clothes shopping!0 -
LOL It took me about 30+ pounds to drop 1-2 sizes... bleh0
-
I have lost 75 pounds and have gone from a 18/20 to a size 10/12....so it is about right for me, but I really think it depends heavily on your body type and where the weight drops from!0
-
Not for me. 40lbs ago I was a 16-18 & now I'm in a 14. I have a couple of size 12s that fit but I don't think I'll be comfortably in that size until I've lost the rest of this weight, & even then I bet I still need jeans in a 14 thanks to my big hips!
Losing weight is so different for everyone.0 -
There are so many variables, it's impossible to assign X number of pounds for a size. Even on the same person it can change; it used to take about 15+ pounds for me to go down a size, but now it takes less.
Sometimes people lose 20 pounds without going down even half a size, depending on where they lose! Feet, forearms and face are good examples where losing doesn't lead to a size reduction.0 -
I've lost 62lbs & went from a 15 to a 5/6.0
-
That's about right for me too. I lost 40lbs since I started (I started at 210, and am now 170-ish) and went from a size 18 to a size 14. I just bought my first size 14 and they're a little loose. I might have to go down another size soon~0
-
I've lost 24 and gone from a tight 16 to a 12/14 (depending on the brand)
Seems true in my case.0
