Is Diet Coke really that bad?

Yes, I know that Diet Coke is not necessarily good for me, and asparame may cause cancer and I should drink more water and all that.

But from a pure weight loss point of view, is Diet Coke bad? Will it cause me to gain weight? It doesn't have any calories, but I've heard that it tricks your brain into thinking you're eating sugar, therefore causing your blood sugar to spike and your body to store fat.

Any thoughts?

Funny you should ask - I just happened across this news article today:

    http://todayhealth.today.com/_news/2012/10/19/14543969-diet-soda-is-doing-these-7-awful-things-to-your-body?lite

Whether or not to drink the diet soda seems to be one of those questions folks really need to answer for themselves.

As for me - while I like the taste of diet soda, given everything that I've read, I prefer to stick to things that are less 'chemically' created.

    Hope this article helps!
  • This was actually a discussion we just had with a registered dietician.. The thinking behind it not being good for you is because, yes no calories and sugar..But it is the taste. Our body is tricked into thinking we are intaking sugar. So we start to produce insulin. Even though there was no sugar, the body thinks it is and then wants more. The other part of it is that we think it is better for us, and of coarse our body thinks it is sugar, so we drink more, and then more insulin is being produced..so you might as well of drank the non diet..

This is just what the dieticfian told us, or at least what I gathered from what she was telling me.. So this post is not a true fact..it is ones opinion.. I personally think what she said makes since..but it everyones own opinion..

    1. Taste does NOT regulate insulin levels. If it did, Diabetics would dang near die from diet soda.

    2. Issue with diet sodas tends to be people's aversion towards aspartame.

    3. Aspartame has shown to cause cancer in rats when administered in incredibly high dosages. To compare to a human, you'd have to have about 5 or 6 gallons of it a day, every day.

Many studies show people that drink diet sodas are larger. This leads people to THINK you'll be large if you drink it. Fact is Diabetic people drink it mostly and they are larger due to other health concerns. Additionally, people trying to lose weight (which happen to be a larger group) tend to drink it. Studies showing people get larger (not just are large, but increase body weight) from drinking diet soda is actually due to the failed diet plan those people have or other health concerns.

Diet soda is not bad for you, and most articles are written by journalists that READ a medical study and have little ability to really understand the RESULTS.

It does not affect your insulin or blood sugar, no. However if you are having difficulty managing a sweet tooth or with reducing the amount of processed food in your diet, diet sodas are not your friend as they perpetuate this craving for foods sweeter than found in nature.

Even if you don't have a sweet tooth/addiction to processed carbs, all soda, diet or otherwise, would be better considered an occasional indulgence than something you consume several times per day.

I didn't start gaining weight until my 40's. I drank diet coke from the age of 20 and never exercised. And like I said, did not gain weight. ( I drank probably 6 cans a day)
