Too much water?

Is there such a thing as drinking too much? I tend to drink water to stem food cravings (ie. when I'm really hungry before dinner) and usually consume more than 3L a day.

There is such a thing, and you can even die from it, but it would be WAY more than 3L.

no unless you don't go to the toilet, if you hold it then it could be bad for you. 3L is fine, I think 2L is just a recommended dose but the smaller you are the less water you need, the bigger you are the more water you need. If you were drinking in excess of 5L a day then it would be wise to see a doctor as this could be due to other issues
  • Great, well it has been getting a lot hotter, I just didn't want to be negatively effecting myself by drinking too much.

    Yes there is.

About two years ago, I drank about six litres of water in approximately four hours. I started to get blurred vision, dizzy, headache and felt bad. I had to eat something really salty fast. Drinking so much and not replacing the lost sodium and whatever else caused it.

Apparently too much water can swell the brain apparently.
  • 3 liters is not too much. That much in one go would be pretty rough since the stomach couldn't hold it all. I live where it gets quite hot during summer and I easily drink 5 or 6 liters of water on a hot day.

I'm a 3L chick too! I've been drinking that amount for the last 2 months, so far so good. I'll let you know if anything bad starts happening

If it were 3 gallon or 12L then I'd be worried.. I've drank upwards of 6L on my cardio days.

yeah, THAT is a lot, and can cause problems...but if you were to drink 6L over 24hrs, it would not cause an issue. One hot day recently I drank 200oz or more in one day ( long story short, for several months I was only logging 3/4 of my water because I was mistaken about the size of my water bottle...so my 200oz day might have been 250oz)

Correct, there have been reports of people suffering irreversible brain damage due to flushing the sodium out of their system and their brain went into shock.

Well there is such a thing and your cells can drown from too much... But you would hae to chug so much at one time for that to happen. In the summer it wasn't anything for me to drink 1.5 gallons of water in a day but that was throughout the entire day and not at one sitting... I was also working out like a crazy person. I'm sure if I would have drank that at one sitting (If I could even do it) it wouldn't have been a good thing.

i drink 3.5 liters a day usually. if i drink less than 3 liters, i usually wake up feeling bloated and dehydrated. if i don't workout i usually drink about 2.5/3 liters. I try to have one glass of water for every hour awake.

I have been drinking just over 2 litres a day, and sometimes closer to 3 litres, but there's a downside... I wake up every 2 hours to go to the bathroom. How do you all avoid this?
