I want to start jogging in preparation for swim team (I know it makes no sense), but how to I control my breathing when I jog?

Jog at your own pace. I had tried (and failed) many many times in the past to start running but my breathing always brought me undone. It takes me around 34-35mins to jog around 4.5-5km, which I think equates to around 6miles/hr, which is pretty slow. But this way I don't have to stop to catch my breath.

I also concentrate on counting my breathing, 3 counts in and 3 counts out.

    Hope that helps.

I try to match three steps with one breath, i.e. right - left - right is breathing in, then left - right - left is breathing out. I then match my pace with whatever I can keep up for a longer time, so I don't push myself too hard and lose my breathing pattern but I still get out of breath. The other big thing would just be to keep at it and don't give up because your lung capacity is growing every time you get out there and just do it! Good luck :)

slow down and just let it happen

lots of new runner tend to sprint every run, you should be running at "conversational" such that you can carry on a conversation without too much huffing & puffing

Thank you all <3 So if I can sing a song while I'm jogging, I'm doing well?

Good advice for all areas of life, true story :3
I would aim for a little more out of breath if you're looking to improve - only because when I run (and I am an avid runner, logging ~25-30 miles per week) I can't sing but I have enough energy to smile when a good song comes on shuffle and mouth the words to it without feeling like I'm going to pass out.

I'm new to running, but maybe I can build up my endurance c:

I learned how to breath while running by singing the song while I am running. It takes sometime and people look at me funny, but if I am ever off pace or having pain I sing a song that I know really well. It's amazing how well it works to control the diaphragmatic pain you get in your side!

For me, I breathe in through my nose for a count of two, then out of my mouth for a count of two. You can do it to a count of three or four if needed.

Good grief - I'd be walking!
