i'm going to "reward" myself with these after I hit 108 lbs. I'm 112 now. i know if I go and do this now I'll eat too many or something. :)

I was trying and trying to figure out a proper recipe and figured the only flour sub could be rolled oats so I typed in "cinnamon rolls rolled oats" and found this.

If someone tries this soon, let me know!

If you want to drizzle with a LIGHT cream cheese frosting you can combine: 4 tsp warmed low fat philadelpha cream cheese, 4 tsp melted unsalted butter (or some variant, but your taste will differ), 1 tsp vanilla flavoring, 1 tsp powdered sugar (if you want but i think its almost necessary for taste) and drizzle lightly in thin lines over the pan when they are still warm OR you can drizzle over the dough before you roll it.

just an idea!!

good luck. cinnamon rolls are a SERIOUS weakness.

PS: for the entire pan, that frosting would be:

    cream cheese: 120 cal
    vanilla extract (imitation) 2 cal
    powdered sugar: 20 cal
    butter: 140 (+/- depending)

    total: 282

    /12 servings:

    approx 23.5 extra per piece

so about 158.5 calories a cinnamon roll.

I suppose you could lessen the butter and up the powdered sugar. Especially for this kind of frosting. I usually make the above for certain cakes.

Those sound interesting! I wonder how they taste with oats, I might have to try it and see.

If you want a low-cal recipe that still uses flour, you could do this - it's how my mom used to make them and after adding out the calories that should be only about 160 each with icing:

    1 loaf frozen bread dough
1 tbsp softened margarine or butter
    1/2 cup brown sugar
cinnamon (to taste, maybe 3 teaspoons?)
    1/2 cup powdered/confectioner's sugar
splash of milk (2% is what we always had)
2 tbsp neufchatel cream cheese (1/3 less fat)

You just roll out the bread dough, brush with butter (save a little), sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, then roll it up. Slice that loaf into a dozen pieces, set them on your baking pan, and let them rise (covered) in a warm part of the kitchen until they rise. That should take 45 min to an hour. Brush the rest of the butter on top and bake them at 350 until they look done. Maybe 20 minutes? My mom and I aren't real good at timing things, we just keep an eye on them until they look done.

For the icing just combine the softened cream cheese, milk, and sugar until smooth... then pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to make sure it's warm and creamy before drizzling over the buns when they come out of the oven.

    Bon apetit!

You have to cut and paste the link.

yeah, cut and paste the link!

how do you figure the dough is only 10 cals more? :p

i think the oats would taste good if you mixed it well or if you had a food processor - i'm not scared of oat-y type foods.

i personally think they'd be more filling but think that the icing would make 'em go down better.

This looks awsome, and I have all the ingredients! I'll let you know how it turns out. (p.s. Kari this recipe has flour in it too)

yeah but 1/34 cup isn't as bad as other recipes that call for like...3 cups! :p

the baking soda has to cut down on the flour content...i wonder if i can up the oats and lower the flour.

    hmm...

anything to lower flour content in my food!!

eh, i hope her calorie calculations were correct :p

i wouldn't want to mess with it that much because you'd alter the gluten content. they aren't going to be super goey cinnamon rolls, obviously, because oats and flour do not bind the same

    anywhooooooooo

food science is making me yawn.

    nighty night time.

    1) probably didn't let dough rise enough
    2) oat-y...mucho chewy. filling, though.
    3) could have used more icing or something to sweeten em up
    4) wanted to leave them in the oven longer but i don't think that was going to fix the problem
    5) would have tasted better with wheat flour
    6) may have worked better with flavored oatmeal (higher cal content though)

    hmmmmmmmmmm.

    needs tweaking
