Your all doing it wrong!

I came across this in another post earlier today, and wondered what people thought about it.

for me it gives a much lower BMR result (which I think is more accurate) due to the inclusion of my BF%

personally I think its good. but thats because it confirms something I already had in my mind.

http://www.calculatorpro.com/calculator/katch-mcardle-bmr-calculator/

so whats your current BMR vs KM BMR?

mine is 1950 down to 1660.

All the calculators I have used had my BMR at 1690 or close to it. I couldn't lose weight and went and had blood work done all that came back normal, then I went and saw a dietician. I had by BMR tested and its actually 1548. Now upon seeing that post today you are referring to I went back and looked at what I had written down when I used that site and yep the Katch BMR was 1548, why I never looked at that I don't know.

So how does this apply to my weight loss goals? I need to eat less than my BMR correct?
A regular BMR calculator tells me 1500.85 while the Klatch BMR says 2084.58

No. Above your BMR - under your TDEE.

Sorry was is TDEE? FP gives me 1200 calories a day plus my exercise calories so I usually eat around 1500 calories. My KM-BMR is way above that. I don't think I would lose any weight at all eating 2000 calories a day
  • WHaaat? Mine went from 1507 MFPBMR to 1603 K-MBMR??? How is that right?
Everybody else's BMR seemed to be going down.:noway: :noway:

MFP has my BMR at 1,586. I've never thought about it a lot or concerned myself about its accuracy. What really matters is actual experience. Through trial and error, I found that given my activity level, if I stay around 2,300 my weight is maintained.

I can see I need to study this more. WHy is there such a difference between teh regular BMR and the KM BMR numbers? It's like 500 calories?

Ok maybe I wasnt' using the KM BMR calculator right. I didn't know my body fat percentage so I left it blank. If I put in 30% it gives me around 1500. How do you figure out your BF percentage.?

it means your BF% ratio must be above the average for your height on the calculation.

so your body fat calculation is better than average. i think. im not that mathematical.

Total daily energy expenditures..... or BMR + exercise + everything you do in your day. You can Google a TDEE calculator.

its to do with your body fat percentage i think. if you have low body fat i.e high muscle mass you need more food to feed the muscle.

where did you get your body fat percentage from?

    legend.

Katch-McArdle:Considered the most accurate formula for those who are relatively lean. Use ONLY if you have a good estimate of your bodyfat %.
    BMR = 370 + (21.6 x LBM)Where LBM = [total weight (kg) x (100 - bodyfat %)]/100

    source above.

I guessed and I really have no idea. I am sure it is high/ I am 5 foot 4 and 175. Have lost 36 pounds this year.

Well that is sad. According to this calculator http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/mbf/ it is 38.8%. Blah
But according to this one http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/cbbf/ it is only 25.5...which seems more likely?

A good maintainable weight for me is 145...if that helps

Mine went up too. 1290 for mfp and 1375 for klatch. Not sure how accurate my body fat measure is though, I got it from my scale that estimates body fat.

I think people can look into this too deeply, it's not an exact science is it? There are no real 'quick-fix' diets either, so why not just use a trial and error approach to seeing what works best for you. It's how you look and feel that counts. When you hit the right balance the scale will be going in the direction you want it to...

    Good luck

I guess that is true. I mean, I know if I stay at 1500 calories given my level of activity, the weight comes off.

It confirms what I thought too. But I'm pooped now with my BF% I must b one of those people going down to skinny fat. Used a scale at night tho. Normally weigh in morning and haven't tried to set BF till now. KM gives me a BMR of 1308. MFP gives me last I looked about 1600. Froggy gave me roughly same but I'm going to have to have a look again cos I am not 100% sure. I always felt they a bit high tho. Wear a fitbit too. I average between 1300 and 1500/wk. Any higher I don't lose. Train 2/wk with intense PT workout. Walking is best I can do on off days (hills, pushing pram). Because of little ones I have fairly sedentary days too..cos I'm buggered...lack of sleep!!

Though there are so many formulas out there, and so many ways of calculating the, As well as "tests" proving them all right.

I personally like the TDEE, the newest kid on the calculation block.

    my tdee is 1949

Although this is somewhat true, long term eating below your BMR can have detrimental effects on your health. Numbers you figure on line are just that - a good estimate. Best advice? Eat about 20 - 25 % below your TDEE. The weight comes off a little slower, but you don't have those annoying side effects of losing your hair or being constantly tired & hungry.

Here's a good site that might help you put things in perspective. It has helped me SO much. Good luck!

true. over the last 3 months i went on what my body told me and adjusted my intake etc and had a consistant and compatable result, i.e eat this much, loose this much/

I just felt that my BMR of 1950 was way to high, and when people on here told me I HAVE to eat over my BMR i was like, yah, whatever. If I had I would have gone over maintenance.

I was worried about damaging my body because I was below BMR. but im not. people get told every day on here to get their BMR and TDEE etc. for a lot of people this is a far better "guesstimate" than other methods.

ya, mine was 38 % on the cbbf link and 23.8 on the mbf one.. huge difference.. why??????

also mine once i used that 23.8 bf took mine from 1500 cals to 1280 for bmr... huge difference.. but the new lowe number was closer to what mfp has set
