I gave up diet coke 5 days ago. I thought it would help with my mood and my weight loss. It's not helping with either. Is there a detox period? I'm about to start drinking it again because I'm rather grumpy. Help.

Yes there is definetely a detox period! I too found myself grummmpy when even just cutting back. No advice really but stick with it, and keep your water up and you should be feeling better soon.

Keep it up!! Caffeine withdrawl is real, but you can do it!! Maybe try drinking some green tea. Or if it's the fizz you miss, some carbonated water.

Switch to unsweet ice tea. Zero calories, but you will get the caffeine fix you need. :-)
  • Don't forget to consider caffeine withdraws. If you're an avid Diet Coke drinker, you might start getting bad headache & irritable. Maybe just start slow. Cut your intake in HALF or however you see fit, then in a couple weeks completely cut yourself off.

I gave up Diet Coke April 30, 2009! First 2 weeks were HARD - got much easier after that.

or sweeten with Stevia - better than the chemical sugars in diet drinks.
  • It never helped me with my weight loss...it may some people, but not me. Good luck to you though!

I gave it up in January of 2008. It was incredibly hard. I had crazy mood swings, headaches, felt nauseous and was a big ***** for the first entire week. Then the second week, it lessened up. The taste of it makes me sick now, but I do drink it occasionally with rum when I go out. It does get easier, just keep on fighting through it!

Why you giving it up? Theres very little in Diet Coke.

I find that it helps with the lack of sweet things i'm eating.

Normally have two bottles (UK Size) a day with a litre or 2 of water and my Weight loss is going ok

I used to drink it all the time (since it first came out in the early 80s). I have also for the most part given it up as well. I didn't go cold turkey, but just drank fewer each week. Now, I do have an occasional one, but I don't enjoy the taste as much as I used to. It does get easier and the craving will lessen.
  • How much diet coke are/where you guys drinking? I am just wondering because I love diet coke...if I have it in the house I could drink up to 3 cans in a day.. but if I don't have it I can go a few days without it.. sometimes I think to myself "I wish I had a diet coke right now" but I definitely don't experience any kind of withdrawel when I go without it....

I find that if I drink a 40 oz. of water before my 20 oz. diet coke I don't notice as much water retention. Hope that helps!

I drank a can a day everyday for probably 5 years or so. Sometimes I would have two a day, but that was the most I ever drank. I didn't drink it so that I would stop eating or anything, I just liked it and thought regular Coke was too sweet. But once I stopped for a week and saw the effect it was having on me, I decided it wasn't worth it.

@Gordy, you are much better eating chocolate than Diet Coke. It's full of un-natural ingredients and Asparatame (the sugar substitute) in it has been linked to cancer, etc...and manufactured sugars are just horrible for your body.
  • Stay on track give up that crap. Aspertame is HORRIBLE for you. You aren't suffering from caffine withdrawll, it's the chemical you are lacking. It has a horrible half life and stays in your liver for a long time. It takes weeks to get it out of your system but once you do you will feel great! You won't lose any weight giving it up, but it's best for your health in the long run.
I gave it up and it took a couple weeks to stop craving it. But I was feeling sluggish and grumpy and that was the only thing I coud pinpoint for the reason.

(sorry for the bad spelling, in a hurry, 2 kids and disaster is impending!)
  • I gave up all soda January 11, 2010 at 9 am LOL. I don't miss it one bit and I think it has helped tremendously with my weight lose. I had horrible withdrawl but by day 4 It was smooth sailing. I drink much more water now too. Just my experience with giving it up

Is 70 Oz (2 ltrs) a day too much ?

I think i drink too much of the stuff, I sometimes get too a point where i can quit for a few days but its not easy and the mood swings can be a bit harsh, keep with it though

Good for you! Giving up pop is not easy! I am speaking from experience...I am on day 41 of no Dr. Pepper. Not that I'm counting...hahaha. I just stopped cold turkey. I was probably drinking about five a day (and not just can-sized) and I thought it's time to get healthy! I have been a pop drinker my whole life, and I only quit twice before....for each pregnancy for a whole year. Then I slowly started up again...and BAM, I was addicted again. Anyway, I guess you are giving up diet, that might be different...I'm not sure? The headaches were a little bad in the beginning. I think they may have come and gone thru the first two weeks. I think the hardest part is seeing your friends drink it, or seeing it on commercials. But I must say, I quit drinking pop and that same week I started counting my calories on this website and starting working out for the first time in about 4 years (before kids). That first week, just from giving up pop I dropped 6 lbs, and the next week I dropped 4 lbs. (Obviously just less bloated...probably water weight) I think it had a lot to do with not drinking so much pop a day, which was almost 1,000 calories a day just from pop alone! Yikes! Plus I started bringing my lunch to work instead of eating out fast food. So I believe that helped as well. Anyway, I'm proud of you! It's a hard thing to do!

i was drinking at least 16 cans a day. it always made me feel hungry. it's not so much the caffeine i was worried about, it's the aspartame. side effects are horrible.

I am SO proud of you. Don't go back to it. Think about the stuff that you are putting in your body. I quit drinking coffee a few weeks ago and don't miss it at all. My husband used to bring me a mug of coffee every morning before he left for work. Then when I started my food plan back in October, I told him to stop bringing it to me that I would go downstairs myself. Then I started forgetting to get it, then I just stopped all together. I might have a cup once in a while in the future but I don't need it to fuel me anymore. Water, water, water, water.

I have taken back control over my mind and body!!

    Way to go!! Congratulations!

It was soooooo hard for me! I loved coke zero. First I just tried to cut down, then I switched to plain seltzer and unsweetened herbal teas. Now it is water and tea only. I could not lose when I was drinking the stuff! It did something weird in me. I craved sweets all of the time! When I stopped, it took awhile but eventually it was much better!

    Best of luck!

I was a complete addict. I constantly had one in my hand. This is so hard, I'm about ready to give in today. Just need motivation. Thanks gals. :flowerforyou:
  • Every time I try to give up diet coke for a week, I end up feeling really, really good, especially since you aren't getting the sodium that diet soda has. Not to mention the aspertame (or however you spell it) that is an artificial sweetener and is all CHEMICALS! Trust me, I LOVE diet coke. But I have started to do a new thing where during the weekdays I will only drink water and sodium-free sparkling water and save the diet soda for the weekend, if at all. It may be a diet soda, but the sodium and chemicals in it make your body go psycho! (Not to mention making you bloat!) Hope this helps!

Definatelty real withdrawl. I was actually advised not to give it up compleletly with both of my pregnancies! The reason is that I suffer from migraines. Caffeine levels is one of the first things they adjust when you get them. They said that one diet pepsi in the morning would not harm my babies and would make me a much happier person.

I am proud of you! I am not ready to give up my diet pepsi yet! I have replaced most of it with water, but I still need my fix! Hang in there.
