tips for shrinking thighs?

Doing reasonably well with loosing weight and getting fit... but I have no idea what to do about my thighs as they seem to be getting bigger not smaller? does anyone have any eating or exercise tips that will help me to trim down on my thighs??

You can't spot reduce. The fat will come off wherever it wants. Just keep doing what you're doing make sure you're doing some strength training along with cardio and eating a well balanced diet. Sorry, there's no magic to it.

can't spot reduce. if you're a woman you're double screwed. genetics carry weight in our thighs/belly/bum for baby protection and fat storage in times of emergency.

for me, i understand 100% my thighs and belly will be the last places to slim down. working on them now, squats and lunges firm me up.
  • running helped my thighs go down a lot!!!! that and squats. :)

My guess is a change of exercise, if you are running or cycling the fat is probably turning into muscle underneath and growing, if you don't want the leg muscle, try strength training or maybe some other cardio?

Dude, what? Fat doesn't turn into muscle. Ever. And if she's eating at a deficit she's not building new muscle.

OP, keep on doing what you're doing and you'll see progress. Also, if you're not, do what everyone else said and add in squats and lunges.

I've lost 2 inches on my thighs by using the exercise bike every other day, I do have a lot of weight to lose though so it may just be that I would have lost that regardless of what exercise I did.

Ok I will serious reply now. I had this problem long ago. I was using eliptical and doing squats and stuff and my thigh muscles got nice but the fat didn't go away = bigger (or at least not smaller) thighs = sad PetStoreKitty

I found that jogging helped. jogging does not build muscle at all but it will still tone muscle because of the consistant resistance. similar to punching a punching bag will tone your arms but not make them all huge.

Jogging is basically just fat burning. Also, someone mentioned the stationary bike. Similar idea i think when you put it on a lower resistance maybe? So you are pedalling quickly. I can't verify that though. I can verify that I started jogging and my thighs and butt got smaller. Now i can see the overly strong thigh muscle a bit ;)

Seem? Are you taking measurements or just guessing based on your own perception of how they look?

As had been said - just drop the body fat - they will get smaller. The body is fickle however and will drop weight where it wants, not where you wants (that's down to genetics). Strength train (squats, lunges, deadlifts etc) to ensure you have strong legs with good definition that shows when you do lose enough BF to see.

Have you been measuring them over time?

you cant spot reduce but you can change body composition.
i would focus on heavy weights low reps for your arms and upper body(maybe abs also) .
and focus on high rep low weight/resistance for your legs. to stimulate less hypertrophy but to keep muscle 'tone' going on there...
this should help with evening out the body composition.

I am a pear shape with a desk job, which is not a good combination for the thighs. I've had the most success with running and squats. I am doing a squat challenge (www.twohundredsquats.com) and it has really helped with my thighs (and surprisingly, at least to me, my core). I did 350 squats Sunday!

Go to the local high school and run the bleachers. This made a HUGE difference in my thighs.

I am measuring and the numbers are going up... not by a huge amount, only 2-3 cm but considering all my other measurements are going down I am finding it a little disheartening...

There are a couple of reasons that you may be seeing this.

    1) it is just about impossible to measure in exactly the same place each time with the same amount of tension
    2) if you exercise, you retain water in your muscles which can cause a temporary increase in the size. There will not be any appreciable increase in the actual muscle however.

when i started jogging, my thighs were the only area to grow, so i don't think whoever said, "you can't build muscle jogging" is correct. these suckers are all muscle and the only time it matters to me is when i go jean shopping! ;-) some of us were just born like this. i've learned to embrace it.

Perhaps I should have been clearer before getting slammed. :grumble:

Perhaps she is growing her muscles that are occupying the space that currently has fat and hence making her legs larger.

Since you can't spot reduce there is every chance measurements can grow in one spot and shrink in another as the muscle tone of the body increases and the fat portion decreases

Exercise those thighs! And be patient. Your body may simply prefer to keep fat on the thighs.

Some people don't need to measure, they can tell by how their clothes fit (like if their pants are tighter around they legs and they were not before).

    You can't spot reduce.
Lose weight until ~18% body fat. (~10% for men)
After that, take Yohimbine HCl or Alpha-Yohimbine (careful on the dosage of Yohimbine, as its side effects can be brutal... 0.2mg/kg LBM is recommended... I can't do more than 0.15 personally), wait 30 minutes, do cardio. This will allow you to burn fat from alpha-2 receptor-dense regions more rapidly.
