Dumbbell Lifting

I want to get into lifting heavier weights but I'm in a difficult situation because I don't have room for bars or benches where I'm staying and I'm moving in two months so I don't want to sign up for a gym membership. (The gym here wants you to pay for three months at a time.) What can I do with dumbbells? I can buy some heavy dumbbells, that's not a problem. I just need an idea of where to start and what exercises/sets/reps to do.

Here is a great dumb bell only routine, that works the whole body. I actually use this at the gym or at home.0 -
Thanks! I'll check out both links.0

Sign up at a gym that doesn't require a 3 month contract
You have 3 gyms in your town, try another.0 -
Actually, there is only one here. I don't like putting my actual town in my profile, that's just a town near me.0

Yep, you can pretty much do a lot with dumbells and an incline bench. Be sure and check craigslist before you buy new.0

Right now I have some cheap dumbbells with plates and they go up to 45 pounds. I'm fine with buying more dumbbells, they aren't too expensive and my fiance and brother-in-law can use them too. I've just been feeling discouraged because every program I find wants you to use barbells.0

Anything you do with a barbell can be done with dumbbells, just copy the movement and do it with dumbbells, the only difference is you can normally lift more with a barbell because you are using 2 arms with 1 single wieght, but with bumbbells each arm has it's own weight to hold.0

i started out with dumbells and have continued using them even tho i have added to my lifting. i find that dumbells are really useful and can be substitued in quite a few barbell exercises. deadlifts, squats, crunches, curls etc. since i have started ive converted a room into a gym and have added several weight benches.. but fact is, with limited space, dumbells are perfect because they offer great mobility to be able to work out anywhere, i love dumbell work outs.0

You can do tons with dumbells. With limited space a good option is the dumbells that 'lock in' different plates and release weight you're not using for a particulat excersice. Very space efficient.
Many different makes and prices. Here is an example

Thanks for the links and tips. When I move I plan on turning the extra room into a gym instead of an office but I figure why wait to start then when I can buy dumbbells to use NOW.0

i have found the same issue and posted a couple of times on the subject if you search under my name.. I am finding that the biggest difference is that you are going to be weight limited by the dumbbells because of your grip alot more as its not divided over 2 hands and your back, shoulders.0

That makes sense. Shouldn't be too much of an issue since in a few months I'll have room to get a bar and everything. Looks like most of these links suggest starting with a set of 5s for most exercises and a set of 10s for other? I have a set that can go from 3 to 45 per dumbbell so I'm good there. Just wondering if that is a good place to start and how to tell when to add more weight.
Trying to transition from lifting 3-5s for 10 minutes in these "women's weights" workouts. That's not going to get me any stronger. lol0
