I've been running lately and enjoying it quite a bit! I am considering training for half-marathon and making this be my next goal. Does anyone have a resource they recommend to learn about the proper way to train for a marathon?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks:flowerforyou:

Join the club-- this is what I've found. Haven't really started in earnest yet....race is in September. I run regularly, but haven't begun seriously training.... can't wait, though.

Join your local club for sure. I joined the triathlon club of San Diego to train for endurance racing. This particular club offers plenty of free advice, training, club events, etc. Well worth it for beginners. Here's a link to a running club forum in south florida.

There are a lot of resources out there and different ways to train for a 1/2 or full marathon. The Hal Higdon method is a popular one and also the SmartCoach program on Runnersworld.com can be helpful. I prefere the SmartCoach because it customizes the program based on current ability and goals.

There is also a discussion thread on here for people running their first half or full marathon where we get ideas from each other and encouragement.

    Good Luck.

Don't know where you live but check out www.usafit.com and see if they have a marathon training program in your area. I participated in San Jose Fit in California and went from running for about a minute at a time to completing 3 marathons. Now I just need to get back into that shape . . . Good luck!
  • My first half marathon is on May 30 in Toronto, Ontario.
    It is coming up FAST!!!
I am starting to get very nervous.
I have not been training often enough.
I have made up my mind that I will do the run even if I have to walk some of it.

    GALLOWALKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used it. I hydrated better and gave my muscles a ten second break every mile or so. I still ran a 9:39 on the splits.

I also used a higdon plan to train. I felt pretty prepared.

is the best! I have a couple of friends training for the Boston Marathon and they are using his program. I plan to use it for my first half marathon as well.
