I try to do this every year but there's always a long wait. Not that big of a deal. Been serving long enough to not worry about a free meal. But it's great that places do this.

It's people like your dad is why i don't care if I don't get a free meal. While I've been in long enough to remember when people didn't really care (20 years and still serving), I never received any treatment the way Vietnam Vets were treated upon their return. They should ALWAYS get special treatment just to aknowledge their service and appologize for how they were treated.
I never accept a "thank you for your service" from any Vietnam Vet (or any Veterans of previous wars) as they paved the way for the correct way to treat our service members. I say thank you to your dad.

You would be suprised as to how many places offer vets discounts.

One of my favorite stories however; goes like this.

Home Depot was giving a 10% off for vets on Veterans day weekend several years back.
So, I decided this would be a good time to make that big fencing purchase I have been putting off.
So, before the guy at the register started to ring it up, I announced I would like to use my Veterans discount. He informed me that he had no idea what I was talking about.
As I started to explain the promotion, I noticed the flyer taped right in front of his register so, I pointed to the flyer and I said 'It's right there".
He looked at it and he said "Oh, thats only for active member veterans".
I said "What?". And then I calmed down and asked him to get his manager.
Well, the mamager explained that you are either
    A: Active Duty
    B: Veteran.

    This was for veterans.

    Anyway, thats all.

Most likely he won't go, he does not like to acknowledge being a veteran much (or maybe he doesn't like to talk about it). He is 65 and is still working and sadly he has never had Veterans Day off from work. He also rarely goes to the VA hospital because he thinks it is for people worse off than him, and said it was his duty to serve.

I would like to thank any one who serves our country and tell them how grateful I am to them. They should be acknowledged every day not just on special holidays.

Also Lowe's gives a military discount every day of the year, I think it is 10%

    How ridiculous!

Do you have a Lowes near by? If so they give a 10% discount every day to veterans

    Home Depot also does.
It was just this one guy with an obvious problem.
Ace hardware gives 15% every day.

I always take proof of my service on Veteran's Day, but every year it's a fight with someone to remind them that women are veterans too. Not even bothering this year. Bumping for others to see.
  • Every year I get my free car wash followed by lunch at Applebee's...

Lowe's does do 10% military discount all year round (for active duty only I believe.)
Home Depot does too, BUT in our area, you have to 'pre-register' in order to be eligible for it. And they have even said you can't register at the time of purchase.
Military discount and veterans' discount are not the same thing ... I am proud to serve my country as an active duty member. But grateful beyond words for those who went before, for a single term or an entire career. We owe them much! And sometimes veteran's day is the only time they get to take advantage of any form of discount recognition for their contributions.

I agree with this. The vets in WWI, WWII, Korea, Cold War, and Vietnam have my admiration and respect. They had it so much tougher than I could possibly fathom.
