Hopefully someone can help me with this...

My mfp nutritional goals are set to 1200 cals, carbs 75g , fat 47g &
protein 120g per day.

When i log in my exercise for the day, obviously i get extra calories (which i dont' eat) but my carbs go up aswel, mostly to about 95g (these i usually do eat) but because i'm trying to eat fairly low carb do u think i should be eating these extra carbs or should i stick to the 75g a day i set myself?

Pleaseee help, thankyouuu  :flowerforyou:

  • I eat my exercise calories, including carbs, fat, etc. I've been losing about 1 pound each week. Don't deprive your body of the nutrition it needs-you're already at a deficit by being set at 1200 calories, so if you burn more calories, you're just maintaining the deficit :-)

Melissa, whatever ratio of carbs:protein:fat you decide on you should stick with regardless of how many cals in a day you eat.

And here's one back at you! :flowerforyou:

are you feeling carb-deprived without the exercise carbs? are the carbs a reward to yourself for exercising? what do you cut out to stay under your calories but up your carbs on the days you exercise? :) i really want to understand your thought process for eating your exercise carbs but not your exercise calories.

Well yea i do love carbs, so it's a reward after exercising really :) if i could i would eat more carbs i would but keeping the carbs relatively low is working for me! i'm always under on my calories (i know it's starvation mode but it's working for me & i seem to be full all the time) i'm always way under on my fat & protein!

1200 calories is low, unless you're 120 lbs or thereabouts.

Of course starvation works assuming you define "works" as seeing the number on the scale drop.

Where I come from though, "works" is defined as the way of eating that controls weight, controls hunger as much as possible, provides the required nutrition for health, is maintainable for life, optimizes body composition (fat vs. muscle), etc.

See where I'm going with this?

I am 123lbs at the moment, it is working for me, i am satisfied & i hardly ever hungry as i bulk up my meals with lots of veg! I don't see the need to eat if i'm not hungry! When it comes to the weekend i eat what i like, i rarely go over my 1200 cal allowance tho, if i do it's only about 100-200 extra! I understand what u mean though :)

Was wondering how long you've been consuming this low amount of calories?

Ummm, a few months before christmas, december was a bad month as i ate what i wanted for about 2-3 weeks! Then started eating under 1200 cals in January up until now...is this bad? :\ i just feel that if i eat any more cals i will put on weight :(

It's not that it's bad, per se, just may be not sustainable in the long run. I don't know what you're doing for exercise, but you want to be sure to adequately fuel your body. There are some good links at the top of the Message Boards about being sure to eat enough. Eating too little works for awhile, but in the long run, you're not doing your metabolism any favors by eating far under what your body needs.

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/3047-700-calories-a-day-and-not-losing

is one of the articles in the message boards Links in MFP you'll want to read again and again.

You must have missed where I said, "1200 calories is low, unless you're 120 lbs or thereabouts."

No calorie intake is low on its own merit. For a woman who's around 120 lbs, I'd say roughly 1200 calories is about right if weight loss is the goal.

That said, I'd be very mindful if a woman came to be weighing 120ish lbs looking for weight loss. Granted, sometimes it's justified as they're shorter and carrying a decent amount of body fat. Losing body fat in these instances will do a lot for appearance.

However, on the flip side, there have been women who've come to me looking to "lose weight" when they weigh 120ish lbs and it's very evident that it's the last thing they need to be concerning themselves with. They aren't lean and that's their goal. But losing more weight won't magically make them lean. In these instances, it's very obvious they need to increase their base of muscle in order to give off that "lean look."

Bottom line is weight loss isn't always the answer for a specific goal and that's something to be mindful of.
