Losing too quickly?

I'm 5'3 and a half and as of now am 173 lbs (I play softball and basketball at my high school and have been weight training there with coaches and trainers so I'm pretty solid. I'd like to get down to 150-149 by February. I'm sick of being the team CHUNK.) I started counting nearly a week ago and have lost a little over 5 lbs. Am I dropping weight too quickly? I eat a little less than suggested but its usually because I'm full enough 3/4 through a meal and stop eating. I've had more energy and have slept better this past week and I'm loving it! I'm just worried that I'm not going to get "real" results because I'm losing quickly and not really seeing a difference in my body. The consistent numbers on the scale have kept me motivated so I'm worried that I'm going to stop losing.

  • Usually at the start you'll lose a higher amount. Just remember the weight loss will probably slow down at one point, but keep on going! Some could be water weight, and others fat. Keep it up though! That's great!! Congrats!
  • No, I don't think that's a serious issue. Your body's not used to the sudden drop in calories, and with you're heightened metabolism (since your an athlete) it's understandable that you dropped weight quickly. When I first started cutting back calories I lost about eight pounds in a week and a half. However, after that it kept at a more steady weight loss of 1-1/2 to 2 pounds each week, which is the recommended amount. As long as your weight loss evens out to about that much each week, I wouldn't worry about. Keep up the good work!

I could lose weight fast when I was your age, too. Enjoy it, things change.

Be sure you're eating enough to fuel your body properly. You don't want to start burning muscle instead of fat, which happens with ridiculously low calorie diets.

Thank you! I plan on starting the 30 day shred next week. I'm hoping that will keep me from plateauing,
  • I find when I first start watching what I eat I can lose 5-7 pounds in a week. Probably some water but if you are drinking lots no worries. It will slow out though so don't get discouraged.
