Getting to sleep after an evening work out.

I seem to have a lot of trouble falling asleep after a workout in the evening. The later I work out the later I fall asleep. Last night I did a group workout at 645 and left the gym at 8. It was 11 or so before I could close my eyes, and that was after a night of only 5 hours of sleep.

I know I can workout earlier and get to bed earlier but was wondering if its normal not to be able to sleep until 3 hours after a workout?

for me it just depends. sometimes I pass right out. but usually, no. I just go ahead and take melatonin and listen to calming music so I can fall asleep

Agreed, a 3mg melatonin works wonders!

luckily i don't have this problem. Most times I can fall asleep within an hour if I wanted to!

I used to have some pretty bad insomnia. It changed when I started working out regularly (and eating healthier). These days I have to work late so I don't finish a workout until 8:30 or 9, and I can usually fall asleep within a half our of going to bed. I go to bed at 10:30. I've heard other people say they had a hard time falling asleep after a late workout too so I think I'm the weird one.

I usually need a min of 3-4 hours before I can even think of trying to sleep after a workout, so you're not alone :-) I workout in the evening as well. If I get home at 8:30, then I go to bed around midnight and it still takes me some time to get to sleep, but this has always been an inssue with me; working out just makes it worse. I do find, however, that once I get to sleep, I get better quality of sleep then prior to working out.

My evening classes usually finish around 9:30. By the time I am home and showered, it's 10:00. Bed time usually in the 11:15 range. And, the alarm clock goes off at 6:00am!

It is rare that I have any problems getting to sleep. When I do it usually relates to some amount of pain/discomfort.

I have found that after I have my shower, 10 - 15 min of gentle yoga stretching along with breathing exercises brings my energy level down to the point where I can relax enough to sleep.
