Have you ever tried using digestive enzymes? I personally have a deficiency of lipase and can't eat anything with fat unless I take a lipase supplement. I live on an extremely low-fat diet, but I'm just fine.
Fat-free protein options for vegan: brown rice protein powder. Any protein powder really. I like to make microwave breads out of it because it tastes kind of chalky in smoothies.

From what I understand the body can, in the short term, live off stored fats in the body. That's not necessarily good since weight loss makes gallstones worse as well, but since it happens gradually I'm hoping that I'm getting the amino acids that I need without the sudden spikes in fat which (I assume) are more likely to trigger the gall bladder.
I'm finally seeing a dietician tomorrow. We'll see what she says, but if I do have to consume fats and have these attacks on a regular basis I can't really stay employed... So here's hoping there's a magic solution that none of us though of!0 -

I can't believe they haven't removed that diseased organ from your body yet!! I had numerous attacks that always wound up with a trip via ambulance to the emergency room. They always wanted to test everything BUT my gallbladder. I finally found a Doctor who would listen to me. Sent me for the ultrasounds and found my gallbladder was loaded with stones!! Had it out a week later. That was almost exactly 2 years ago (I did it the day before Thanksgiving, had the long Thanksgiving weekend to rest) was back to work the following Monday. Had not had any problems since!!!!!!! You need to INSIST they take that nasty thing out or else you will just continue to wind up in the emergency room!!! Eventually there will be NO diet that can stop a painful debilitating attack. Get it out! Best of luck :flowerforyou:0 -

Not sure at the moment. I think it has one gram per serving, but my last attack only took 5g of fat, and I just saw the surgeon and he said I should be on zero fat until the surgery. I'm going to head to the health food store to see about some zero fat options.0 -
Hi everyone. I have another update.
Yesterday afternoon i went to the dietician. She basically said she couldn't help me since everything she suggested had "trace amounts" of fat, (1/2 to 1g) which my body can't tolerate. So I'm sitting in her office and I start to have an attack. Went straight from there to the ER and got all drugged up. It took the edge off but I was still in pain. He was going to give me dilaudid pills, which I had at home and have been taking for years. I took them as soon as I got home instead, but they're not effective for me any more, so it made no difference. Still couldn't sleep so I went back and got morphine, which combined with the other pain killers made me vomit on the ride home. Not my best day. Liver enzymes were up a bit on this test (but not high enough to justify surgery) and I spent a total of 7.5 hours in the ER.
This morning I woke up still very much high and feeling like I had the worst hang over in the world. I was supposed to drive myself to the city (3 hours away) to see the surgeon, but I had to get my mom to take the day off work to drive me. We went there and I saw him. At first he seemed to be blaming me for having 5g of fat (and just over 1000 calories) yesterday before 3pm (I was trying to digest my food before going to sleep, because I almost always only get the pain at night). I had my log of course and I argued and he seemed to come around. He wanted me to see the specialist (and I had an appointment with one on Nov 22) but he managed to track one down in the ER in the city. I was able to see him and he quickly reviewed my file and said he was going to have the surgeon take a biopsy of my liver when he removes my gallbladder and he'll follow up with me afterward. YAY - I got an answer. Tomorrow I should find out when I get the surgery. It sounds like he's going to let me jump the line a bit, but I still have to wait two more weeks because, get this, the surgeon is going to be in my home town this week and next, but he wont do the surgery there because the liver issue could lead to complications and I would have to be airlifted to a larger hospital. So I have to do it in the city. Just hoping that I can get the surgery done asap, but feeling a lot happier about my situation and a little proud of myself for busting down doors and being difficult. (His first question was "how did you get this appointment" and I answered "I just kept harassing your receptionist")0 -

I don't want to come off as a jerk or start some kind of international flame war, but are the hoops you've had to jump through and all the stalling and everything you've had to endure because of the free healthcare in canada? We (my wife and I) pay for our health insurance but thankfully it's not the kind of insurance where you have to get referrals and permission for things.
I had an HMO when I was having gallbladder problems. It took winding up in the ER once to get my surgery booked but up before that I had to have this test, that test and the other test before I could get improved for surgery.
For me it wasn't all fat just mostly dairy fat. I have gallbladder problems on Both sides of my family and my parents also had it on both sides of their family. I shouldn't have had to jump through all the hoops.
When I had bad attacks, I would take a warm bath, it seemed to help, not make the pain go away, just make it not as bad. Just make sure you have someone to check on you so you don't pass out in the tub.
As everyone has said, good luck to you in getting the surgery as quickly as possible. You'll feel so much better. I was in the hospital by 7:00am and home by 4 that afternoon. I was back to work within a week and it would have been 6 days but I didn't have any clean work clothes so I had to do laundry all day on that last day0 -

I don't think all these delays were because I'm Canadian. Really, it was a mixture of things. Partly my failure to express how often / intense the attacks were. I came across at first like it wasn't a big deal and like I could wait. Someone along the way dropped the ball, and I suspect it was my doctor's receptionist. She never ended up booking the appointment with the specialist that I was waiting for since July. Another element is that I live in a very rural area in Northern BC. There aren't a lot of specialists / surgeons here, and since my liver issues make me a slightly higher risk there's extra pressure because we don't have the resources up here to fix it (so I'd have to be airlifted to Vancouver).
I'm so thankful for Canadian Healthcare. I'm still on probation at work, so I don't have any special coverage yet. If I were in the states it would be impossible for me to pay for the surgery out of pocket. My husband recently immigrated to Canada, and I was going to school, so we wouldn't have even been able to afford coverage (he actually went without for almost a year until he became a permanent resident). I feel like I have enough to worry about without stressing over the cost of these visits and procedures and I'm so grateful that it's all covered (with the exception of out of hospital prescription drugs which cost well over $100!)
I'm obviously really frustrated by the way this has all turned out, but I have to admit I can understand why there are some hoops. At this point I can't eat anything (even no fat) without setting it off. I'm on painkillers constantly and I can't work or even take care of myself. Since it's not a medical emergency yet (could be at any moment if I get an infection or it ruptures) it still counts as being "elective." I think that's totally unfair. That being said, I do know of a lot of people who had one or two attacks after a giant meal at McDonalds or something that want theirs removed as well. I think the hoops are in place here to make sure the people with the most issues / complications are given priority, I just don't think I managed to communicate how bad the situation was earlier on.0 -
Have been there, had mine removed. They said no fat at all was not a good idea. To have some but keep it low. Just have small amounts spaced evenly over the day... To be honest I will not get better... There is only one resolution! Get it whipped out! Will be the best thing you ever did x0

So, more news. I've been to the ER five times since early Friday morning and to the hospital seven over all. The pain isn't going away at all anymore.
They've got me on a lot of pain killers and anti-biotics. They did an ultrasound and it's showing that the gallbladder is inflamed, but I don't have a fever or unusual white blood-cell count, so no infection (yet). I've barely been able to eat anything, and I was dehydrated this morning. It took ten tries to get the IV in to fill me with pain killers / fluids since I was so dehydrated and in so much pain. It hurt more today than it's ever hurt before, so that's saying a lot. I'm drinking better now and the pain is still present but not overwhelming.
The surgeon is in town on Tuesday (f***ing long weekend!) so we'll figure out where to go from there.
For now I'm missing work and my husband / mother are basically taking turns looking after me (driving me to the ER, feeding me, filling prescriptions, making sure I don't OD on pain killers...). I'll try to keep you posted on this.
I'm so thankful for all your support, and I hope anyone stumbling on this post that also has gallstones has much better luck than me!0 -

I'm trying to have it removed.
There's obviously no way to live without fat in the long term, but that's the only option for me right now. My dietician and surgeon agree. Just eating small amounts of no fat food throughout the day causes me more pain now. When I started this post I would have an attack whenever I had even small amounts of fat throughout the day (8g one day, 5g another) but my last attack came after I ate 1/2g of fat and it hasn't stopped in days.
This topic has gotten a little outdated I guess, since things have deteriorated so much. Now I'm just hear to ***** lol!0 -
More news:
I saw the surgeon yesterday. He was so aggressive and rude to me (and my mom) and he wasn't even listening to what I was saying. I don't have an infection, but one of the ER doctors put me on anti-biotics to make sure I don't develop one (since that would delay surgery). The surgeon said I had an infection (the ER doctor told him otherwise and I tried to but he WOULD NOT LISTEN) and said I will feel better after the anti-biotics kick in. He said that would take about 48 hours and it had been almost 72 when I saw him. He said he wanted to move the surgery back because of this "infection."
He asked what I ate to make this happen. I told him I had one baked potato on Thursday night. I showed him my food log, which as you can see has pretty much no fat and not even a lot of food. He told me to stop eating cheese (I'm a vegan) and to lay off chocolate. When I saw him on Thursday and showed him my log he said it was no wonder I had an attack if I ate a bunch of chocolate covered cereal. I was so confused, then I got him to point to what he was talking about and it was my extremely low fat chocolate flavoured rice protein powder. I still said that's probably what caused the attack. I told him I've been on clear liquids (gatorade, water, and a tiny bit of veggie broth) for the last couple days. He said he wouldn't have a problem with me eating a grilled chicken breast, which, even if I wasn't vegan, I wouldn't be able to eat since it has so much fat in it.
I was so upset after I saw him. My husband and I went to see my family doctor who was really great. She stayed late at her office to talk to us, and she said she's going to talk to the surgeon to see what his problem is. She wants to try to convince him to do the surgery, since I've already had a consultation and would have to start from page one with another surgeon, but she is going to refer me to another surgeon if she doesn't like what she hears. Might mean travelling four hours away to a city, or all the way to Vancouver (12 hours away) but I'm totally down for that. I can't work anyway, so there's nothing in the way.
Hoping to get some good news from my family doctor, but the surgeon is such an unbelievably arrogant *kitten* I sort of hope I get to see someone else.0 -
One last update.
I got a call from the surgeon on Wednesday at three telling me he'd set up an appointment with another surgeon in the city (3hrs away) for three hours from then. Packed like crazy and my husband drove me. Got there and the surgeon said he wanted to operate the next day (Thursday). They didn't have a bad so I stayed in the motel with my husband overnight. Showed up Thursday morning and they still didn't have room for me, so they told me to drive to another town one hour farther. Drove like crazy to get there and had the surgery thursday afternoon.
He said the gallbladder was really swollen, and it was actually stuck to my liver, but he managed to do it laproscopically and it's out now. Still lots of pain and inflammation in the area, But the gallbladder, and a few significant;y large stones, are out for good.
Back to a well balanced diet (after not eating anything for 5 days!)0 -

I've had gallbladder issues for the last few years, but they've gotten a lot worse recently. It doesn't seem to matter when I eat it, or what kind of fats I eat (I'm vegan, so they're always the "good fats") I end up in a lot of pain for hours. It usually means I miss out on a night's sleep and I have to take very potent pain killers. So, I don't have much of a choice but to cut out fats all together (trying to stay below 5g a day).
Has anyone else had to deal with this? I'm going way over in my carbs, which seems unavoidable, but I'm wondering if anyone has ideas for no fat, vegan protein options or things to eat that will make me feel full for longer. I'm feeling really deprived, so even ideas for keeping meals interesting and satisfying my cravings for chips / french fries / avacado would be very much appreciated!

Yes. I suffered from severe gallbladder attacks. I stopped guessing about what foods I can and can't eat and had it removed. The best thing I ever did! Have you spoken to your Doctor about having it removed? It's a common surgery, safe and recovery time is quick!!!

Did you even read past the first two or three posts? She's been fighting the doctors for weeks trying to get surgery, while they told her it wasn't bad enough, or was just an infection. She finally got someone to listen, and had surgery two days ago.0 -

I'm so happy I had it done. Still taking some time to feel better since everything was so inflamed. Getting better though and finally getting some protein!0
