Has anyone had much success with the 5x5 workouts? I'm going to change lifting routines and I'm looking for something different.

Do it, it's one of the best beginner routines out there

    I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, "Man, I wish I didn't try 5x5."

It's impossible to go wrong with a 5 x 5 program doing deadlifts, bench press, and squats. As long as a person is using 80-90% of his or her one-repetition maximum and getting adequate protein, it will result in myofibrillar hypertrophy (real muscle growth).

The 5 x 5 program was the routine that everyone on my high school football team used to get jacked out of their minds -- 30 years ago. It still works.

Way too few reps, way too much weight in my opinion. I try to shoot for 2 or 3 sets of 25 at least. Any less and you're just wasting your time.

I did 5x5 and I do regret not doing supplementary exercises.

Today started my 2nd week of 5 x 5 and so far it's going great. It's awesome starting 'light' and focusing on form and gradually increasing the weight. I haven't run into anything overly taxing, but having a good streak of success before things really get heavy is a great confidence booster and great motivation to keep going. I've only experienced a little soreness, but that's far better than being so sore that you don't want to lift again.

I say give it a go for just those 12 weeks. You don't have anything to lose.

Hahahaha..... wait, I don't get the joke.

OP, I loved it. It is great for beginners in particular as it helps you increase your weight quickly. No one ever quit working out because they had TOO MUCH progress :)
Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

It's a pretty intense workout, but doing that kind of heavy weight for few reps has a lot of scientific and anecdotal support for increases in muscle mass, increasing strength, and burning tons of calories.

Pretty much a win all the way around (as long as you maintain proper form and don't hurt yourself)

    5x5 is brilliant!

Choose a program Starting Strength or Strong Lifts, these are beginner programmes and where you need to start.

    http://startingstrength.com/ - READ THE BOOK!!!

Get the workout spreadsheets here: http://diystrengthtraining.com/

    Best workouts going IMHO.

I lost 82 pounds, 10 inches from waist and gained lean muscle mass and strength.

Depends on what you are going for. If you want to get as strong as you can as fast as you can and are willing to eat a decent amount over your maintenance level, it is a perfect way to start. If size is your main concern, it may not be the best.

Supplementary shoulder exercises would have probably prevented my arm from going all wonky. I think it's a great core to a program, but I believe additional exercises to train the Rotator Cuff and Shoulder muscles would definitely be beneficial.
