How do you fight depression?

Background:
Finances are hard right now and every payday is a struggle. I refuse to live like this forever and that is why i'm getting my bachelor's degree. It just feels mentally that this is neverending struggle.
Boots--our cat of 10 years. Was sick for 1 1/2 days. Next day he was gone--as in missing. His is a home boy and never leaves more than a few hours. He definitely does not miss mulitple feeding times. We have searched and searched our house and neighbors with no luck. As soon as I realized the next morning he was gone, I felt in my heart that he went off to die. I have no idea what in the hell would take a cat so very fast like that but this is what we think.
He was a good cat. He was the calmest cat I have ever seen, even as a kitten. He was living on the streets and starving. Shrugs, I cant look into a baby's face and know that he's starving--he was so skinny when he first came here. He was a cutie too with dark grey fur and four white boots. RIP Boots.
Years ago, I had a bad reaction to a product I used for 2 1/2 years. Every since then, I get hit with depression every once in a while.
I know what works for me. These include: hard physical labor, sunshine, if it is a light case-music.
Do you guys have things that you do if you get depressed? I would love more ideas.

Am struggling to beat depression and have no idea how, have lived with it gradually increasing for about 17 years, but really feel like am losing to it now, so would really love to know how to beat it.0

I usually clean something that I've been putting off for a long-long time. If my family seems me down on my hands and knees in the closet, they know to leave me the F alone.
It really helps when I'm done and can appreciate what I've done.
Of course grief is different from depression. When my doberman died 2 years ago, I barely had the energy or motivation to get my usual day-to-day responsibilities done, and I'm sure you feel similar about your cat right now. Take care of you; losing a loved one is so hard!0 -
music, cleaning, organizing, telling myself that bad times dont last forever. It is not easy to fight off depression. I struggle more with anxiety but I have had some problems with slight depression as well.

hopefully you can do well when you get your b.s.
i have had mine since 2010 and i still barely get by (although i work in human services for non profits). just don't become discouraged, keep on pushing through!

These are the same for me. Also planning helps me. I make lists and predict the future (... sort of :laugh: ) and remind myself there are ALWAYS things to look forward to.
Also there are some days I just curl up in bed and let the world float by. Allow those days, but don't allow many of them. Maybe once every couple months.0 -
Over this past summer I was diagnosed with depression. I started medication and things started getting a lot better. The one day I didn't take my medicine (I thought I did but totally forgot), I had horrible mood swings and was going crazy again. When I feel depressed, I tell my boyfriend and he tells me we need to go out and do something. I try to stay active adn do somethign that makes me happy.0

Try to find non-medication answers to depression before you go running for the doc and the meds. The meds are expensive and the side effects of some of them are not worth it. I would go for meds only as a last resort.
For me, music, walking, and getting lost in a book usually help.. they take me away from reality for a little while.0 -
90% of the time the bad cases are when I am sleep deprived. Getting a good night's sleep does wonders. I can be crying frantically, go to sleep, and wake up pretty much ok.0

but I know a few people who have gone to doctors for medication and it really helped.. but took a while to find the right drug.
I guess you need to distinguish between "having hard times" depression and medical depression. the two are very much NOT the same. the hard times depression is significantly easier to beat or battle.0 -
I go for a power walk or run. It really lifts me in ways you can't imagine. Doing fitness every day really helps my to beat any blues. Something about endorphins.0

Pills made me feel like a robot, I won't ever do that to myself again.
Currently I'm doing exercise, eating right, being busy as much as possible. I love getting lost in a book while listening to music and I also like my herb.
There are also natural stress and mood relievers like St Johns Wort(do not use if you are on birth control) and Holy Basil. they are a short term relief. I take Holy Basil at lunch during the week and then "detox" on weekends, so far so good.
Also there are days that you need to stay away from the world,I let myself hide out maybe once a month. Turn the phone off and stay in my room, keeps me balanced

I am so sorry to hear about Boots. I had to watch 4 of my cats pass away and it is so hard and heart breaking. My finances are really tight as well due to being on disability. There is nothing I can do to make money that I have found that I am able to do. Those are big stressors. I have suffered from major depression for most of my life and have been hospitalized 6 times for it. I am currently taking abilify and effexor xr for it and have had a lot of counseling. I am still in group therapy. I learned that journaling all your thoughts can really be helpful in working out how you feel. Also, if you get upset you can throw ice cubes into your bathtub which helps you burn off that frustration. I have a loving husband that is here for me and I learned that I really need to talk to him and let him know how I feel and what I am thinking. I don't hold anything inside anymore. I explode into a major depression episode when I try to hold things in. Going to college is also very stressful. Make sure to take time for yourself. Listen to calming music, read a book, watch a funny movie, do a craft, etc. You can get through this, but sometimes you might need professional help to do it. You can't always do it alone. Not all psych meds are expensive nor do they all have side effects. And just because one has a side effect for one person does not mean that it has one for someone else. It's great if you don't need meds, but don't be afraid of them, either. Personally, without them I can guarantee that I would not be here today.0 -

I have been severely depressed in the past. I got professional help .. and I stuck with it until the doc felt I was ready to fly solo. He even let me stay on the meds for an extra 6 months as I wanted to be personally sure I would NEVER EVER get that bad.
It didn't start off bad .. it gradually got worse. I actually had several "bouts" of depression .. and managed to pull myself out of it on my own .. but each time I got depressed .. it got worse. I started having more "triggers" .. it became increasingly difficult to cope with stress each time .. financial.. emotional (getting dumped) .. other struggles..
There's no shame in seeking and getting that help. I'm stronger than I have ever been .. and I will NEVER allow myself to go down that road again. I will get help if I feel I'm slipping beyond a bad day or two. :flowerforyou:
It's been 12 years since my depression .. and I couldn't be happier or more healthy today0 -
I'm bipolar, so the first thing is making sure I'm taking my meds and doing the work I
need to do in therapy. The second thing is to journal my thoughts and feelings for at
least 20 minutes a day. This brings up thoughts and feelings I may not even be aware
of, and once I see them I can then take them to prayer. Third, I can increase my exer-
cise because it raises the levels of neurotransmitters(serotonin, norephenephrine, and
dopamine) in my brain. Fourth, if I'm still feeling lousy after the meds, I eat a small ser-
ving of pasta and dark chocolate together. Operative word: small. Not sure why, but it
levels me out. Finally the support of friends and family is key. They may see me acting
or reacting in a way that is unusual for me. They can tell me what they see, counsel me
as to what to do, and if it's serious enough, consult my therapist. This is just what helps
me...take from it what fits you. In any case, I hope you feel better...0 -
Taking the time to do basic things for my health when feeling little or no self-worth. If I don't take steps towards health it becomes that much easier to believe what depression tries to make me feel/think. It quickly became a vicious cycle for me: I am worthless because I don't/can't take care of myself because I am worthless...ad infinitum.
I remind myself of this often: if I can do something about the situation, then I just need to do it and there is no need to worry; if I can't do anything, then there is no need to worry. It took time and hard work for that to sink in so I can feel it even at my lowest, but it was worth it. My anxiety and depression levels are very, very low compared to the past. The biggest help for this was a combination of meditation and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
After having everyone around me try to counter my negative thoughts, I began wondering if it was all of them trying to cheer me up (some sort of conspiracy?) or if they actually felt that I was a good person who didn't deserve to hate herself. I got to thinking that either everyone around me was trying to trick me into thinking I wasn't worthless or some part of me was trying to trick me into thinking I was. So it helps me to view depression as a separate part of my mind that is trying to trick me into hating myself and not taking care of myself. Then I try to outsmart whatever my negative thoughts/feelings throw at me. It's a bit dramatic and silly, but it helps me channel my energy in the right direction. And the silliness helps to counteract all the darkness.
It becomes so much easier once you build confidence in how you handle stress. It is also important to devise healthy rescue plans from despair, so you can climb out from the depths of darker moments/days/weeks.
Not sure how many of these tactics will help others, but this is what has helped me with my particular depression demon.0 -
Check your level of vitamin D. I'm better if I exercise regularly & really put myself into it, not just go through the motions; make sure I take 1000 to 2000 iu Vitamin D & 1000 mg B-12; and eat clean - ie stay away from processed foods. Stay away from meds if you can. Was put on a light dose, but absolutely hated it!!!! Bah! Drugs bad!0

I take my meds, every day, without fail. I practice excellent mental hygiene, which includes good sleep, meditation, reducing stress, and exercise, exercise, exercise.

I avoid sugar. If I have sugar it makes me feel out of control, weepy, raging, tearful, attention seeking and lost. I feel fine at the time but the morning after I have hangover type symptoms and then gradually the rest appear over the course of a day. What works for me is cleaning, lists, order, nurturing myself (paint nails, bath), writing a timetable for the next few weeks, plenty water and veg, spend time with cats and sleep. I wish I could remember to not eat sweet things. At the time of eating it I am thinking "this is lovely, a wee bit wont hurt..." then the next day I feel very silly and always heavier on scales...ARGH.0

I have suffered with mild to moderate depression in my lifetime. I can only share with you what I have tried. I am not one to go on medication...I choose to go the more natural route, but that is because my depression is not severe. Here are some things that have helped me:
- Diet- I stay away from too many carbs/ sugar. When my blood sugar is unstable, I am much more prone to feel depressed.
- Exercise- taking a walk or even doing some chores around the house always lifts my spirit.
- Do what you love- I enjoy music, reading, and taking hot baths. These really help me when I feel down.
- Supplements- Omega 3, B- Complex both helps A LOT. I have tried St. John's Wort in the past and it helped. I've heard about Sam- E as well.
The only other thing that I do is sometimes allow myself to feel sad. Sadness is a normal emotion that we should not always have to suppress. I sometimes take a hot bath and just cry it out. I feel much better afterward. However, if you feel very depressed you should talk to someone you trust such as a Dr., Spouse, friend or family member.
I see a Christian counselor once/ week to talk through some of my issues and it helps me see things through a different perspective.0
