Diet Coke?

So I've heard mixed reviews on drinking diet soda while trying to lose weight (and just in general). What are your thoughts, does this hinder weight loss?

I have one can a day as my treat......And I'm losing ok.
I guess it depends how much you guzzle0 -
This article might shed some light on it for you:

Studies have shown that consuming sugar alternatives like aspartame can increase sugar cravings. The diet coke itself obviously won't affect your weight loss as it has no calories.0

I drink a 600ml bottle a week... no problems losing :drinker:0

IMO, it is not something that I am willing to give up. When I lost weight, I drank diet soda every day. I do believe that it can cause some people to crave sugar more so watch for that, but I feel like it was the opposite with me. It satisfied my sugar craving. Just don't count it as water.0

"sugar free" drinks make me more hungry.
Diet sodas and sugar free syrups when I go to Starbucks result in be being hungrier faster.
I read stuff about this but I cannot give and references ecept to myself.
I had more trouble loosing weight when I drank diet soda.
Plus, it tastes terrible. Not worth it. If I really want that stuff I just know I will have to add all those calories in.
Helpful Subs:
-Iced tea at restaurants- black, not the fake sweetend stuff- I'll crave a coke but srlsy if I want my pants to fit, I'll deal with it.
-Starbucks uses Vanilla soymilk so if you get soy, it's a little sweeter!
-Club soda. It's cold and bubbly like real soda, but it's pretty much just water you can add fresh fruit to it or lemons if you want flavors. Restaurants will usually be able to serve you this, especially if they have a bar.
Hope that's helpful!0 -
I drink about 2-5 a day.
I've lost about 115 lbs.

Thank you everyone for your replies! I would hate to give it up because I often find it helps keep me from snacking!0

I gave up diet soda three months ago. It doesn't change your weight loss, however, for me it has helped reduce my sugar cravings. It was hard to give up at first, but after a month without it, I don't miss it. I can tell a difference in cravings.0

its a "diet" drink, what do you think LOL0

I am trying not to drink it (I LOVE IT) because when I drink water only I have no problems with hunger. When I drink a diet soda I am hungery all day long.0

I guess it is as simple as that. I had just read some things that referenced that sometimes those "diet" things or substitutes can be more harmful. Always good to hear peoples firsthand experience!0 -
I still drink sometimes, doesn't make me crave sugar or gain weight. But, I try to watch how much I drink. I try to limit myself.0

This question pops up at least once a day on here and usually causes a stir. I have one a day and it has never caused me to gain weight or craved sweets. :drinker:0

I used to drink a can or more a day, but stopped a few years ago for a couple reasons (including being cheap- seemed like a stupid thing to spend money on), and since I have stopped, I feel better.
It was hard at first, but I realized I just needed a different source of caffeine to get passed the cravings,so I drank coffee or tea instead and weaned myself off it.
My stomach feels better, I sleep better, and I do think I have less sugar cravings.
Not scientific or definitive, but that's my story.0 -

This too! I keeps me away from the cookies!0 -
From what I've read about diet sodas are that once you drink they the body thinks its getting a sweet treat and has the same reaction it does with a regular soda...but when the sugars and such aren't there from the diet your body has had this reaction for nothing and so when you eat something it latches on to all the sugars and what not and stores them....
Diet sodas are counter productive0 -

It will give you cancer.... at least thats what everyone tells me when I drink it.0

Okay I usually have a diet soda once a day, and I'm still losing weight. Some people say its good, some people say its bad. Use your own discretion. As long as you are eating healthy and getting your 8 glasses of water everyday, I think a diet soda every once in awhile is fine.0

Diet coke has no significant caloric content. Your body can not store it as fat or lean tissue.0

I drink all the diet cokes and count it as water0

When I drink my first diet coke of the evening, it signals the end of the alcohol for the day for me. That seems like a good thing. It is the technique I use to stop for the day. I haven't had sugar cravings for a long time. I think this is a situation where your mileage may vary, but if it causes problems in some folks with regard to sugar cravings, just observe how you react your own self. Proceed appropriately, with caution.0

As a special treat. I have worked on substituting my soda cravings for carbonated mineral water, but every once in a while I just gotta have my diet pepsi.0
