Obsess over scale numbers?

Weight is but a number defined by a scale. I do not care as much about the number on the scale as I do about how I feel and look. If I look and feel like crap, I don't care what the scale says. If I feel good and look good, I don't need the scale because obviously I am doing something right. It's just a good tool. Don't get so obsessed with the numbers as if you weigh yourself 3x a day, you're not going to get steady results, but you are going to make yourself crazy! Taking a poop can leave you 2 lbs lighter and eating and then weighing yourself can make you gain 2 lbs...... SO I will be crazy free (which is why I don't own a scale, I weigh once a week at doctors office) and keep trying to feel and look healthy. <3

I lost 1 lb today for our Biggest Loser Challenge - but that could change in a matter of hours. See how unpredictable weight is? :)

If I went by how I look and feel, I wouldn't have bothered to lose weight.

    I agree with that. ^

Even when I was at my heaviest, I never realized just how big I was. I thought that I looked/felt good. Now that I actually *do* look, feel good, it's easy to see why I had a weight problem for so long. Denial. In retrospect, I cannot believe that I thought that I was "okay" when I was so overweight and unhealthy.

Weight is unpredictable and no, we are not defined as people by our weight. Our health, however, is often defined by our weight.
  • Thanks for this. Ive gotten my kids to hide the scale and only tell me where it is on Fridays. I feel SO good but than I realize I"ve only lost 3 pounds and get sad. I did start taking measurements and that makes me feel MUCH better!
  • I obsess too! I just decided a few moments ago that from now on, I will ONLY weigh every 1-2 weeks, maybe longer ^.^ I gave my scale to my parents, so now even if I do change my mind there's no going back.

although it's not the most important thing to me i wish i was making SOME progress. I just keep fluctuating 3lbs. V_V I think instead of everyday i'm going to start weighing once a week.
  • I agree. Another interesting fact is muscle does weigh more than fat so even though the scales can indicate weight loss sometimes it can't if that fat is replaced w/ muscle! I think the best way to really determine if you are losing is by taking measurements. I do have a scale that calculates body fat %, muscle weight % and water weight %-it seems accurate, sometimes when I have not lost weight or I have a gained weight and the muscle % goes up and my measurements are better I still know that I am still on the right track.

I can see how that makes sense -- but I was implying that if you are doing the necessary things to get healthy like eating properly and exercising, I don't find the scale needs to be an everyday or multiple times a day thing. I weigh in once a week at the docs office and my appointment is always around 10 am, after I have breakfast. SO normally I feel a little full when I get on the scale so the number could be wrong, but that's what I go by as it's very accurate.

Being overweight, I was in DENIAL a lot of the time and then when in denial you trick yourself into thinking you look and feel good, but you actually aren't. I was speaking of "looking and feeling" good relative to doing healthy things and finally being out of denial. After all, for me anyways, coming out of denial was my swift kick to my *kitten* to get healthy cause it's when I realized I don't look good and feeling good is what I CRAVE.

I don't know if what I said made sense but I hope it did.

    Scale *kitten*!!

I obsess and weigh daily. It helps me stay on track. while I do not obsess *nearly* as much as I used to as I know look for a better BF% number - I still need the number on the scale to be a certain number or less!! Shoot me!:ohwell:

Yes, like I mentioned in my previous reply, denial is a dangerous thing. Haha. Not in so many words, but you get it. I was there for many many years too... sucks so bad, but it's so good when you finally have the epiphany and get out of it.

I hate how society has people defining each other and ourselves by our weight. HEALTH in general should never be defined by a number that fluctuates more than the stock market values do Haha But somehow, it has. I was the healthiest overweight person I KNOW!! All through my years of school, I was super active, involved in Volleyball (fav sport ever!) and we won champions throughout our province!! I was also in dancing, weight training and basketball and soccer. I LOVED to run and have a ball around -- even when I was at home, I'd be outside kicking the ball around with my brother or we'd spend LOOOOONG summer days at the beach playing beach volleyball!! I was super active. But my eating habits were horrible because my dad had a few strokes (he was a cook) but cause he couldn't often use the left side of his body, he started cooking crap. That's when I started packing on pounds. EVEN THEN, I could still run around the soccer field faster than my thin friends who were half my size or smaller! My gym teachers often asked how it was possible. LOL Still healthier than a lot f my current friends cause I have more endurance and stamina and they hardly exercise so they out of breath going for a slow paced walk!

THAT MY FRIENDS, is a better description of healthy than a stupid number. (Granted, now that number is slowly declining so it's even better!)

That's a good idea. :) Kids are good a hiding things!! Haha. Once a week is a good way to measure if you are gaining or losing. It's not healthy to do it everyday.

I weigh myself once a week at my doctors office - every Thursday and we record it. She told me to record my food (so now I do it on here instead of in a book) and if I gain, I can go back and look to see what I need to improve on for the following week. I do my full body measurements once a month and it's always amazing. I remember saying "WOH, I lost ___ many inches after only losing 7 lbs this whole month!!! HOLY COW!!" cause muscle weighs more than fat, remember that. :)

Like I said in previous responses, once a week is a good idea -- most people say weigh before you eat breakfast, but I don't and I still generally have a 1 lb loss at min once a week.

Also, my doc said if you find yourself for a long period of time fluctuating the same numbers or staying the same, then change up something in your diet or your work out regime. I normally do the exact same workout everyday I am in the gym, but need to change it up every month so I don't hit a plateau. Also, maybe it's true you need to push yourself harder while working out as it's true that as we lose weight, it gets harder and harder for us to continue cause when we're heavy, it's easier to burn cals and sweat like a pig, but once we lose a bunch, we have to realize we can't continue at the same speed or jogging or cycling, we need some resistance and faster speed or heavier weights. Hope that helped!!!

It's alright to want to be a certain number or less on the scale, but if it's becoming an addiction, then it's not a good thing.... So I hope for your sake you try to weigh less cause like I said, pooping can have a 2 lb variable on you or eating can too. It changes several times throughout the day....

The scale matters. That's why we're calorie counting and weighing in :)
