I play guitar myself, so i have so much repsect for talented artists, as i now how hard it is! i cant disagree with some of the names mentioned like Joe Satriani and John Mayer.
But you guys should check out a British singer/songwriter/guitarist called Ben Howard, he is simply amazing!

jimmy page, eddie van halen, dimebag, bb king, frank gambale, marty friedman, buckethead, chris storey, rusty cooley
john petrucci, randy rhoads, nick hipa, eric clapton, chris broderick, jari maenpaa.

as you can see i'm partial to metal \nn/ >.< \nn/

I'm pretty sad that only you said Eddie Van Halen. The dude is a legend and he's still go it! He rocked it with his son on the last reunion tour. Totally epic

Eddie is my choice. I don't listen to a lot of current music, so I have to go with what I grew up (and partied) with.

    Great solos, great accompaniment ...
He is just a fantastic artist on the guitar for over 20 years.

I've played the guitar for several years and have always loved:

    Eric Clapton
    Jimi Hendrix
    B.B. King
    Slash
    Steve Vai
    Joe Satriani
    Eddie Van Halen
    Jimi Page

Sure there's more too but my mind has gone blank.

Matthew Bellamy of Muse. Mad, but utter genius.
  • Guitarists? Guthrie Govan, no question. He teaches at the Brighton School of Music in the UK but is also 1/3 of one of The Aristocrats, one the most little-known supergroups ever (if that makes sense) with Brian Beller (bass) and Marco Minneman (drums).

I'm a bass player. Can we have some bass players? Jaco Pastorius (compulsory but undeniable), Victor Wooten, Geddy Lee, John Myung (stunning musician but I hate his recorded bass sound), and my latest "discovery", Avishai Cohen. Hearing this for the first time changed my life (seriously): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VScRIvrOawY
