Hey all, what do you think about drinking whey protein? I work out a lot now, so I want to drink protein to help rebuild muscle, but I am of potential weight gain and I'm afraid I will bulk up, which I don't want to do.

So my question is, do any of you use protein powder or something similar, and if you has it worked or have you noticed weight gain?

If I feel myself getting hungry around 2pm and I'm going to work out around 3-3:30, I'll eat a protein bar to get me through my workout and tide me over until dinner. If I workout in the morning or night and it's a particularly intense workout, I'll use the whey protein powder (I have chocolate flavor). The directions read as follows (as an answer to your question):

"For adults, add one scoop to 6-8 ounces of water or your favorite beverage daily. Serious athletes and bodybuilders (over 125 lbs) should consume 1-2 scoops immediately after exercise.

    ....

For Mass Gaining, add higher calorie foods such as peanut butter, 1-2% milk and fruit juices.
For Dieters, add lower calorie foods such as skim milk or just use water."

So, to make a long story short, just a little will give you protein without bulking up. Hope that helps!

As a female, you won't bulk up. The only way to "bulk up" is if you're taking testosterone or steroids. It is a myth that is making women afraid to be strong and fit. So don't worry about it.

Whey protein is a good way to get a lot of protein straight from the source. I'll have some after a hard workout with water. I am trying to get some more carbs after a workout too, to help absorption, - so tonight I ate a banana with my vanilla protein mixed with water. (as for the carb thing, I just learned more about that today, so I may be wrong - I am not an expert.)

I've done some research on what to eat before and after a workout to help replenish and maintain the work you just put in. The best thing after a workout is some fruit and protein! Fruit to replenish and protein to maintain muscle mass. If you check out some of the websites for female body builders, you will quickly find that "bulking up" is very difficult! No way will it ever happen by accident! These ladies eat a crazy diet of lean protein and lift some very heavy weights for hours every day. So unless you're having 3-5 egg whites for breakfast and at least 3 chicken breasts on top of a couple protein shakes a day, and hitting the gym for multiple specific target area lifting sessions then good luck even trying to "bulk up".

Try Tropical Smoothie Very Berry Green Tea Smoothie without turbinado and add a scoop of whey. Total of 220 calories (add splenda if you want). It's the perfect post-workout treat especially if you did some weight training!

BTW. A lttle bit of complex carbs and some caffine pre-workout helps me to push hard and get a great workout.
