Sweaty hair?

Hi guys! This is a weird question and probably one for the ladiez, but if any dudes can answer it, I'll be impressed! Ok, so I dye my hair red. It looks natural, I promise! The problem with dyed red hair is that it can fade pretty quickly and in order to avoid that, you're supposed to wash it only a couple times a week. However, I go to the gym quite frequently and am always too grossed out by my sweaty scalp to follow that rule. But my last dye job only lasted a few weeks before seriously fading!

Anyone else have this problem and know any solutions? Dry shampoo? or should I just leave it be and the water will take care of the grossness?

My stylist recommended skipping the shampoo every time. She's daily exerciser too, so she understands the need to get the sweat out, but told me to wet the hair, massage the scalp and rinse well (no shampoo), and then condition the ends. I started shampooing every other day - works great.
  • As a former hairstylist I would recommend skipping the shampoo as much as possible, but if the water water is too hot you could be fading your color faster as well. If you love hot showers save your hair for last- turn water to luke warm- rinse well - use a conditioner for colored hair.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. OK. I will do my best to resist the urge to scrub the sweat off! :)

Are you using a color protecting shampoo? I use Redkin Color Extend.

I skip the shampoo sometimes in the shower. I also shower at night, and then use a dry shampoo in the morning before styling. seems to work okay, but I always keep a hair tie with me for quick pony tails if needed.

I do. I think I bought some panteen. Have been using my other shampoo first to get rid of it. I always use color saving shampoos. But I suppose it may depend on the brand.

Dry shampoo is fantastic for me! I love the sexy hair brand- as it also provides a lot of volume.

I use Kenra Platinum for my colored hair, and I shampoo every day. It's not red, but it's dyed dark brown with a bright demi-permanent purple chunk in the back. The purple area was bleached first and lasts pretty well through 4 weeks, though it's starting to get a little more like a dark pink by the end.

You want to double check that your shampoo is sulfate free if you're looking for color safe.

^^ This woman knows her hair. I used a shampoo she recommended and it made my hair amazeballs after a day in the sun and chlorine.

this adice is the best you're gonna get. i keep my hair dyed deep purple and i'm very active. i only shampoo once a week and add leave-in conditioner to keep my hair from feeling crackly. my color looks great for about 35-40 days before i need to touch-up.

You might also try using a tinted shampoo and your stylist might even be able to mix some for you.

I also recommend dry shampoo. It really helps to freshen up between washes.

I had a similar problem with my dyed red hair a few months ago. I used dry shampoo as much as possible. When I washed it in the shower I either used baby shampoo (really gentle on your hair) or a shampoo & conditioner specifically for dyed hair. Red hair is notorious for fading fast, I used to keep my colour fresh with the wash-in wash-out sachets of temporary colour. I used maybe one of those a week to help my colour last longer, and it really worked. Instead of reaching for the hair dye after 2-3 weeks, I could easily go 4-6 weeks before needing to dye again.

I LOVE Kenra products. I use the shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair, and I think my color lasts pretty nicely for 8 weeks or so. I also love the shampoo for Volume. I shampoo usually every other day. On days I don't shampoo, I use the Oscar Bandi dry shampoo. I'm not a fan of the scent, but it gives good volume!

Some super cheap stuff I use that works great is baby powder! Now, before you go all crazy and say "that will make my hair white", listen up lol.

Just sprinkle a little into your palm and rub it between your hands. then run your fingers through your hair and on your scalp! It also makes your hair easier to style and gives it more volume!

You can get lavender scented baby powder which smells amazing and not like baby powder at all!

That sounds AWESOME! I have some bad feelings about using baby powder for anything after my hippy mother made me use it under my armpits because "antiperspirant is bad for you", but that seems like an easy way to deal with greasy hair. Also probably good to invest in for bikini line shaving (TMI). :)

I just rinse my hair and spritz on a lil' leave in conditioner afterwards to take care of any lingering sweaty smell.
  • I rinse my hair when I can (sometimes i add conditioner to the ends) and use a dry shampoo or a bit of baby powder if im in a hurry and wont have time to dry my hair. I only shampoo every third day.

I was told by a stylist that shampoo/conditioner with sulfates and parabens in it can strip color a lot faster as well. I get Nature's Gate shampoo/conditioner and also made sure it was made for colored hair. I think it has some organic stuff in it too. Going great so far!

I dye my hair red too and workout 6 days a week i use a shampoo specifically for red hair (John Frieda I am in the UK). It still fades but not as fast will try rinsing every other though from now on and see how it goes.
