Hello everyone,

Here is my dilema.. I really want to start strenght trainning but I have no desire (for right now) to go in a gym facility.. probably has to do my my self image problem.. I do realize that exercise and nutrition go hand in hand and I do exercise regularly but more cardio then strenght trainning. The problem is that I don't how to start with home exercise.. I bought Jillian Michael's DVD but it got me discouraged because I am not in shape at all and have a hard time to finish the first part of the DVD (Get ripped in 30) never mind the rest ..Does anyone know how to get started with a strenght trainning program that would target all the body part... if you have any suggestions I would love to know them.. How often should I strenght train per week..?

I did go to the gym in the past and had success with it.. and I will eventually join again but right I am not ready..( I love walking so I do that 3-4/week)

Thanks

I am not doing a gym, not cuz of what I look like there but because I don't go when I do join. I am doing youtube on the TV and have weights and a pilates machine I got from craigslist. No need to go to gym. Check out hasfit.com. Lots of really nice videos there. Walking is good. I don't do that. But am in a challenge starting Sunday so going to have to! My dog will appreciate it.

Youtube has lots of nice videos. You have to look for a while to find some that last long enough but there are alot there. They have zumba, cardio blast, weight lifting, etc. etc. etc. Really nice if you can watch on tv from computer or xbox.

    blessings!

Honestly, I would suck it up and go to the gym...get a few training sessions to formulate a plan just for YOU.

When I started at the gym in February, I was almost 100lbs overweight. 20 minutes on the treadmill had me pouring sweat. Fast forward to today...I have lost 32lbs, the front desk guy knows me by name, and the trainer ( who I have NEVER actually hired) is helping me learn some free weight stuff. Yeah, I am still fat and lumpy...but I am leg pressing more than my body weight, I'll be squatting 100lbs by Christmas, and I can do pull ups that I couldn't do just 4 months ago.

yep, suck it up, it's all in your head. People aren't there to look at you, they're there to look at themselves. There are bigger people, and smaller people then you at the gym. but if you're THAT worried about it, go on Pinterest and look at all the "at home" body weight exercises. Squats, lunges, planks, burpees, mountain climbers, etc will get you in wicked shape to prepare you for deadlifts, seated rows, bench presses, etc. or Bodybuilding.com has a lot of great information too.

When I started working out with my trainer back in February, I was extremely self-conscious. The only thing that helped was that he came to me. This was also great from a scheduling perspective. He brings any weights/equipment he'll need (though we have quite a bit of our own anyway) and I get to work out in my own basement. Maybe you could look into something similar?

I started going to the gym 1year ago and I was about 200pounds I was so scared of how people would look at me how they would judge me when I would try to run how they would talk about me how fat and out of shape I was I WAS FLAT OUT EMBARRASSED. I was going alone wich made me feel Evan worse!! But I was so unhappy and big and deeply depressed I got the courage and said to my self FU** WHAT THEY SAY & THINK ABOUT ME (I'M GOING TO DO THIS FOR MYSELF NOT THEM) AND THEY CAN LAUGH AT ME AND STARE AT ME ALL THEY WANT BUT WHEN I'M LOOKING BETTER THEN THEM THEY WILL BE LOOKING DUMB FOR EVER DOUBTING ME!! and I said that to my self so many times NOT REALIZING that no one was ever judging me at all IT WAS ALL IN MY LOW SELF ESTEEM /SELF CONFIDENCE. I went everynite for 2hours each and I blacked everyone else out and now IT'S BEEN 1YEAR.and I'M down to 128 TRUTHFULLY JOINING THE GYM WAS THE BEST THING I COULD HAVE EVER DONE FOR MYSELF! once you start to realise That EVERYONE IN THE GYM IS THERE FOR ABOUT THE SAME REASON U R! & it will surprise u how many others in the gym feel or have felt the same way u feel now! ;) I'M sorry that was so long but I just wanted u to see from someone like u IT'S ABOUT U! NOT OTHERS AND WHAT THEY THINK; ) DO it to better yourself!

I forgot to mention earlier...there are other MEMBERS saying nice things to me/ about me too. Before Thanksgiving an older guy I see most days walked by and complemented me on my biceps ( I must say, they ARE rather nice!)...and one day I was chatting with the trainer, and this lady who is recovering from a stroke walked over and says "she's really doing awesome, isn't she?" and he told her I was!!

I feel like junk when I see all the 100lb cardio bunnies on the ellipticals...but then I go over to the squat rack or the leg press, and I feel bulletproof :D I kinda wonder what they are going to think when they see me obviously squatting more than they weigh...LOL

I was ashamed of my body when I started going, I would even try and coordinate my workout gear. I go at 8 or 9pm, pop in head phones and do my thing. It doesn't bother me anymore. The first few weeks were rough but once you start going, you're a regular and it's a lot easier.

You may not see it but others do, I was complimented the other day about how much I can lift. Later in the evening less of the single-hit-on-each-other crowd is there and the serious muscle builders workout. Plus it's fun to watch people try and use their cellphones while doing crunches, etc.

I share your sentiments and concerns about gym embarrassment, but I have to keep telling myself, people are probably thinking more about themselves than me. Most people just want to get in, do their routine, and get out.
