Excess calories, above what you burn, cause weight gain. Regardless of source.0 -
Those people are dumb. Protein is protein, whether it's from a shake or from a slab of meat. Only excess calories can make you gain fat.0
-
No. I have one, sometimes two every day and am still losing.0
-
That's what I thought. People don't know what they are talking about!0
-
If they fit into your calorie goals they won't make you gain weight.0
-
No0

I think most people run into trouble because they drink protein shakes and expect them to be some magical weight loss thing and they don't limit other sources of calories. Also, protein shakes are like smoothies, you can make them pretty low cal to very very high in calories based on what you put in. If it fits in your limits then it's fine.0

You will gain weight from all the muscle you instantly generate from consuming protein ????0
-
No

I'm doing a lower carb plan so I drink the Atkins Advantage shakes that are low carb most mornings for breakfast. I'm not big on eating early in the morning so it is easier to drink a quick shake. I've lost 35 lbs. so far0

Those 3 people are horribly and terribly wrong. It's a food, just like any other source. Drinking them doesn't magically cause you to gain weight above the caloric value of the shake.0 -

A membership to MFP comes with an automatic degree in nutrition and nonsense.
This is probably based on the misconception that the only people who drink protein shakes are meatheads who are here to buff ... you up. Everyone else has covered that it's silly. My question is, did you ask them for their opinion or did they peruse your diary and decide to mess with your head on their own?0 -
Nothing will make you gain weight if it fits into your maintenance or weight loss calorie guidelines.0
-
IIFYM IF IT FITS YOUR MACROS!
No offence but those people are morons.
It will essentially make you lose weight as long as its the right type of protein (and not a weight/ mass gainer with lots of extra carbs). it will help you decrease the energy you receive from fat and carbs by replacing it with protein as long as your fitting it into your goal calories for the day.0 -
There's nothing mystical or magical about protein shakes. It's no different than eating a piece of chicken....if you eat them to the point of caloric surplus, you gain weight; if you don't, you won't. Judging by some of the threads here (not just this one by any means), there are people who apparently think protein powders/shakes have some voodoo that transcends what they really are - just another food source. Great way to supplement your protein intake if you're not getting enough from whole foods, but that's all there is to them.0

Mine are only 110 cal 17 grams protein but I have lost 40 lbs having 1 or 2 a day ...................................0

Sadly loads of false information is widely spread, and thus believed. It's thanks to people like those three that people go on weird diets.0

She never said that the people who commented were from MFP....
OP....as many have said, as long as you are within your caloric intake, you will lose.0 -
If I have too many they make me bloated and I hold weight, so maybe something to consider - I have one a day after training0

Ummm.. no.
Caloric surplus = weight gain.
Even if you were a serious body-builder, it takes time to build muscle mass. I eat 200-250g of protein daily and I'm still losing. I have a shake after a lifting split or if I'm on the go and need a meal replacement.
FYI: Slim Fast is NOT a protein shake.0 -
Some 'protein' shakes are stuffed full of high glycaemic index carbs which won't do your weight any favours - read the ingredients list and macronutrient breakdown carefully. I have seen products that are basically gainer (protein plus carbs) misleadingly labelled as protein powder. Females generally need a lower portion than guys, if you overeat at one sitting or through the day as a whole you obviously can gain bodyfat.0

The powder I have CAN make you gain weight, it depends on how you use it. If you're using it in milk, yogurt, adding peanut butter, etc, those are meant for builders who want to gain a lot of weight and muscle. If you're using skim milk or water, that's where you're just getting the protein and not the extra fat.
I'm using Body Fortress, in case anyone was wondering.0 -

actually it was 3 co workers who saw me drinking my morning shake and decided to give me their worthless two cents on it. I use Jillian Michaels brand with PB2 and fat free milk. They are my breakfast. 360 cals and kep me full ntil my mid morning snack. I only consume 1200 cals a day and even my nutritionist and dietician said they are a great source of protein.0 -

it's funny you say that lol one of them is taking Durian pills, that nasty fruit from China? And that's all shes "eating". Yup you're right!!!0 -

Throughout the day, yes.
One sitting, no.
You could literally eat all your food in one sitting and if your total calorie intake is appropriate (caloric deficit for weight loss) you will still lose. Eating an entire days worth of calories in 1 meal will cause fat storage to go up after the meal and fat oxidation to go down, however you have to consider that, by definition, if you're eating all of your food in 1 meal you're also spending a good portion of time (the rest of the day/night) without food. In that condition, fat storage goes down and fat oxidation goes up.
The difference between fat oxidation and fat storage is what matters. This is determined by energy balance.
Big picture is important. Short term is not.0 -

QFT. The only way to gain is to consume more calories than your using.0 -

Dammit no wonder im gaining all this weight, i use so many protein shakes!!0

NO they don't! I have about 5 per week as I struggle to get enough protein in my diet, who doesn't?!. See my ticker, I'm almost at goal and I have been drinking them for many, many months. It's simple, calories are calories, that is all! Eat at a deficit, bust your butt in the gym and voila there is the magic.0

I started my journey 2 years ago, with the only change was a diet type protein shake for breakfast...I still went out to dinner a couple times a week, and DID NOT ORDER SALADS, I don't do well with fresh raw vegies (sensitive stomach)....before I started here on MFP I lost 29 lbs this way...I mix it with water, it's soy based, 120 cals per serving and 18 gr of protein...it is a complete meal replacement with 1/3 the recommended daily amounts of all nutrients...plus ALL ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS...I have steadily lost without any problems (I have a lifelong issue with allergies tho, and might possibly have Celiac...we're checking that now)..it is gluten free, if anyone needs to know....at this time, I have lost 35 lbs...this mixed with water tastes very yummy, unlike others I have tried...it comes in chocolate and vanilla only...it is made by GNLD and is not in stores...it is sold by distributers or you can google it on the internet...if you spend the $50 to become a distributer (you don't have to sell if you don't want to) you will get a 25% discount..if you buy by the case, you get 6 for the price of 5....I love this product line...all is perfectly clean and gluten free for anyone sensitive....they have been around for 50 years and are all over the world.....0
