Hi all
For the last week I've been seeing a personal trainer. He put me on a nutrition plan that he explained may seem restricted but he wanted to see if I have any intolerance to dairy and basically 'shock' my body into getting started on the weight loss path.
So for the past week I've been on no dairy, no starchy carbs and minimal sugar. Fun! In all honestly its actually not that bad but I really did expect to see a decent loss in my first week. I've just got on the scales and I've lost just over 1lb.
Now with the amount I have to lose that isn't a lot at all. In a normal week1-2lbs would be great but in my first week of this plan I expected 3-4 to come off. Is that unrealistic? Keeping in mind I want to lose around 80lbs
I weigh in with him tomorrow and I feel like he's going to be as disappointed as I am.
Should I be expecting a slow start here?

Slow start still means you started! No need to be disappointed. A pound of fat is a lot.
Also, if you never worked out before, it's possible your muscles are retaining water right now.
Also, you might have to poop.
And, a gallon of water weighs eight pounds. So if you drank something before weighing or it's still going through your system, that could be it, too.0 -

I would ask your trainer to explain this "shocked into weight loss" thing in detail, because it sounds like complete BS to me.
If you enter a calorie deficit of ANY kind, after being on a surplus for a long time, it's a shock to your body. Stress hormones are releases, water weight drops etc. You don't need to cut out any specific food types to do that, you just need to come in under your TDEE.
Your trainer might be uneducated - in which case drop them.
Or they might be trying to sell you snake oil, in which case drop them.
Or they might have just been using a colorful catch phrase to get some sort of point across, in which case they owe you a more reasonable explanation or... drop them.0 -
I chose this trainer after a LOT of searching because he seemed to be the best in my city. The no dairy was to see if I had an intolerance to it that I didn't know about as apparently a lot of people do.
I'll question him about it again and ask for a more in depth answer as to WHY I'm eating like this. I have been known not to pay full attention....... :-/0 -
Food intolerances and allergies can cause inflamation which doesn't cause FAT gain, but it can cause WEIGHT gain. Your trainer is trying to see if you have problems with certain foods and if so, you can eliminate those foods to help jump start your weight loss. Sounds like you don't have issues with those foods if you've only lost 1lb, though. Good luck!0

Also keep in mine that it's perfectly normal for our bodies to retain fluid when first starting an exercise routine, which could mask some weight loss.0

Agreed. Beginning an energy deficit is shocking enough, I think. Personally, I would never let someone else choose my diet. I'm too bull-headed to do what I'm told.0 -
I eat everything. I don't limit myself and when I'm craving something, I go out and buy it, HOWEVER everything in moderation. The most weight I've ever lost in one week is 5 lbs, but that's because I was on a super strict diet. I love dairy, I love junk food and even though I don't eat it as frequently , I do still eat them. My favorite are hot fries. I can eat 3 bags in one sitting without blinking an eye. Now I'll only eat ONE serving = 33 pieces.
Disclaimer: I am not a food expert or in the medical field. What works for me, may not work for others. I have good weeks, ok weeks and bad weeks. So far not so bad0 -

When people see the big losses in that first week or two, it's usually the body letting go of a bunch of water and a little fat. If you were well hydrated before starting your diet, you probably won't see the big losses. Just over a pound is a great loss, even for the first week. You'd be surprised how quickly that adds up and how quickly you get tiny, especially if you're working out.0
