That Elf on the Shelf?

My kids are too old (13 and soon to be 17)...but they still and will always get presents from Santa...Personally its creepy and if I did this when they were younger...it would have given them nightmares..I mean they both still sleep with night lights..0

And WHY WHY WHY do my friends insist on posting a photo on FB every single day of where it was the night before??????
NO ONE CARES!!!!!
^^THIS. I have 9, yes 9 folks on FB and every single one of them posts a pic of where the kids found him every single day. Ugh
Okay so I get the concept of the fun behind it, but it's for YOUR KIDS AND YOUR FAMILY, no need to inundate the rest of the world with how good/bad/indifferent your kids were b/c of said elf on a shelf (who doesn't sit on a shelf he is EVERYWHERE). LOL0 -

Yep! We have a Krampus at the bottom of our tree! Better be good or I will toss you out in the snow to him!0

MAN a lot of grumpy parents out there. Make **** fun, life is better.
P.S. My 3 and 5 year old kids love that Elf and we didn't incorparate the whole "be good or he will tell Santa on you" bull****. Just a nice story about how he is telling Santa how great they are doing and how excited they are about Christmas. Happy kids, happy wife, happy life.0 -
I'm wishing for a elf on the shelf.
My mom set up my old my buddy doll and kid sister in kids tables we used to have. I assume this is to replace me.

It is fun for my 3 girls! They rush out of bed every morning to find "Griswold" our elf. Which in turn makes getting them ready for school easier!
I HATE the stories from their classmates about all the crazy things their elves have done! I feel like I'm slacking a bit but hey, my kids are loving what Griswold does. My oldest is not as enthusiastic(she is 10) but she understands letting her little sisters enjoy it.
My kids WANT him in their room. I am very thankful for the "no touching" rule or I would have to do all kinds of magic to get him to move each night. They would have him duct taped to their hand if they could!
And I too eat the carrots and cookies left out for Santa and the reindeer. It's only a short time that we get to enjoy these things.
But the elf is still a bit creepy!0 -
LOL I hide one every night!
Me too! I tried like heck to avoid getting one. Darn kindergarten gossipers!!! My daughter was horrified that she didn't have a "scout elf" like her friends...
Yup, me too! Dang kids need to be learning at school instead of talking about the latest shenanigans from their Elf! Should have homeschooled then I wouldn't have to hide a creppy little elf all around my house and frost cheerios to make it look like he made them donuts! I can't be a slacker compared to all those mom's posting their Elf happenings on FB! geez!
Thank GOD he isn't here ALL YEAR!
LOL! Tell me about about it! I am a slacker at finding hiding spots! And the FB stuff...drives me crazy!!0 -
"...however every Christmas eve you will find me in my front yard chewing up carrots and then spitting little pieces out to let my kids believe that the reindeer really did eat those carrots we left out for them."
   love it!
Our elf was a gift from our son's godfather who expects daily pictures of the Eli's shenanigans. Our ten year old has stated that he "creeps me out with his creepy eyes" and the five year old says, "I don't trust him, he doesn't blink."0 -
My boy loves it. I don't think it's any creepier than Santa being able to some how magically see when you're sleeping...when you're awake...when you're makin' it in the living room with your wife...in fact, it's far more logical that Santa would have scout elves keeping tabs on you.
My boy only has two rules...Ernie (our elfs name), isn't allowed in his bedroom or the bathroom...other than that, he's good. I always make it a point in the morning to tell my boy that Ernie has returned from the North Pole where he told Santa what an awesome kid he is.0 -
Our kids love it....they run out every morning to see where it is. Why is everyone so excited to kill childhood innocence? They are only little for a short time then the reality of how much this planet sucks will set in. Lets let them enjoy being a kid for a while.
My step son loves looking for him in the morning. I think it's a great thing for kids except one night we forgot to move him! lol0 -

Yup! My daughter loves her elf. My 12 year old son luckily plays along and helps me find hiding spots.0 -

I want my kids to enjoy childhood and do my best to perpetuate Santa and other myths like that. However I also try hard not to threaten something that will never happen. so I have never used Santa as a means to get my kids to behave. In that same vein the elf really serves no purpose for us.

I've also let my kiddo know that Santa is off the cookies and prefers orange wedges...with visiting all of those different homes, he needs a vitamin C boost to keep him from catching cold.0 -
We couldn't afford an Elf on the Shelf, so we just use our Sugar Daddy Ken doll:

While I agree with you that it can add to the fun of the season for kids some of the "elf antics" are just too much. I have a friend who actually has the elf do things every night - and some of them are naughty - like Stringing toilet paper from the ceiling fan, or drawing mustaches on all the family photos. HUH? Why exactly is this elf doing naughty things when it is supposed to serve as a reminder that you need to be on your best behaviour (for 30 days of the year).0 -

What happened to the good old days when parents just told their kids about Krampus?
I know many that still do.0 -
My son runs out of his room every morning to find his elf, Cameron (he named him after some baseball player). Personally, I have a blast thinking up things to have Cameron doing every morning, so it's just something fun and silly to do around the holidays. We've been doing it for 3 years, since my son was turning 5.0

careful hiding him peeking out from the ceiling fan...he DOES melt.
my neighbor told me this on our walk the other day...they have a bandaged up elf>..heh0 -
Yes, let's lie to our children, shall we?
Oh wait, we are really lying to ourselves because all you "Elf on the Shelf" people have already spent your December's salary on the kids presents. What would be bad enough for the elf to tell Santa NOT to give the gift? Really, I'd like to know - because you know that as good as your kids are, they are not perfect, they are gonna screw up.
Your child then learns that whether they are good or not, they will still get presents. Why should they listen to you at all?
No wonder kids are growing up thinking that they are entitled to everything - I mean dam, what's a tooth worth these days? And don't tell me they do anything for that.0 -

I don't like what the Elf represents. I don't want to scare good behaviour out of my kids. There are pictures on my facebook feed of little kids bawling because the Elf is going to tell on them to Santa because they ate a cookie without permission. They are 3 years old! Unless parents are willing to follow thru on Santa not bringing presents because the Elf saw bad behaviour, then the Elf has got to go. The kids are not learning an over-all good message.
Every time I tell someone that I don't like the Elf it's like saying I don't like Christmas or something. I'm told that it's just for fun, and mom and dad are getting more enjoyment out of the toy than the kid is. But the very core idea of the Elf is that he's a rat-fink who tattles to Santa every night about what the kid did that day. Personally, I want my kids to feel like Christmas is a special holiday known for giving to others because of the birth of baby Jesus. Santa plays a role, but he isn't a tool used to terrorize my kid for a month.
Plus, the elf is straight-up creepy as heck.0 -
I had to ask Google what the hell this is. My kids are teenagers, and they figured out the Santa Lie at an early age anyway. They are smart kiddos.
Anyway, yeah, kinda cute, but I could see where it would get creepy. I guess the point is to move the doll every night to trick your kids? That's interesting. My parents used to threaten to make a phone call to the North Pole. That trick was free of charge, and it worked when we were little.0 -

I'm really embarrassed to admit to people what I give my kids from the TF. They get what I got...which is a quarter for regular teeth, a dollar for the front ones. They seem really excited about their quarter, and far be it from me to take that away from them! However, most people I know give their kids $5 for regular teeth, and like $10 for the front ones...I figure why give them more when they are happy with less? If they want a toy at times of the year that isn't Christmas/their birthdays, then they can earn it by doing chores that aren't their normal ones (no money for these as this is part of being a family and everyone has things they have to do around the house).
Oh, and nowadays kids get "gifts" for everything. Like people on Facebook are all "Oh, here's a pic of the kids getting up to get their Valentine's Day presents!". Mine get a chocolate and maybe heart-shaped pancakes! They have enough crappy plastic toys that they don't play with.0 -
I use it to get my children used to the constant surveillance that will be present when the hegemony assumes control of the nation-state.0
