I started MFP in 2011......I logged every morsel that came into my mouth.....I counted nacho chips when I went to lunch with my coworkers -- who sort of laughed at me but I didn't care...I lost almost 40 pounds........felt great.......had beautiful healthy weight people coming to ME for advice on how to eat right, be healthy and lose weight!!!! I started doing more thing......felt like I was becoming the athletic person I had always admired......kayaking, biking, walking........even participated in a 5k..........and didn't come in last!!!! That 5k exacerbated a knee injury, which lead to medical treatment, surgery, etc.........and I've regained every pound I lost...........and I'm having such a challenging time trying to get things to kick in again!

So, when you lost all that weight - did you do it through deprivation dieting? Low calorie intake? Because that kinda crap happens when people don't really ever learn how to eat in moderation at a healthy calorie level. It sucks. I was on the yo-yo diet train for yeeeaaaarrrrrssss. How much are you eating now? 80% diet, 20% exercise will get your body back...so let's start at the basics.0

I agree with 80% diet and 20% exercise.0

I was eating at the calorie content that MFP gave me - and eating back some but not always all of the exercise calories earned. I want to do it healthy and have it be a lifetime change and not a "diet". I had knee surgery again in Sept this year (Other knee and a different injury)........so my activity hasn't been happening and I'm having to start over but finally my knee is healed enough that I can get back to doing some things.
I agree completely that it has to be a combined effort to get the results (health, tone, balance, nutrients) that is the goal.
I'm struggling with logging, staying in my calorie range, etc..........I need to regain my focus..........I was so focused before.........I'm not sure how to regain that.0 -
so what's your calorie range? MFP defaults are VERY low for most people...and even the macro set up is whack. Especially that protein goal - geeeeez could it be any lower?0

Eating less and exercise only play a small role. What plays the biggest role is the TYPE of foods that you eat. Seek out foods that are:
High in water content
High in nutritional content
Low in fat
Have adequate protein, but not too much.
The only foods that really fit this are fruits and vegetables, and to a lesser degree, legumes and grains. If you want to live at a healthy weight effortlessly, make your diet revolve around the fruit and veg, and everything else be careful with.0 -

dafuq? Uhm, NO. This is 1990s thinking - low fat diets are crap. So are low-carb. Eat in moderation. Protein is king when you want to retain lean mass while losing fat.0 -

Both of you make good points. It leads me to ask, what about how early man ate? mostly veggies, fruits and some protein when he could catch/kill it..........maybe that's how our bodies were made to be fueled? Thoughts?0 -
I just discovered Fat2Fit radio (http://www.fat2fitradio.com/) and I would highly recommend it to you. Go to their homepage, scroll down a bit, and on the right there are three podcasts you can listen to. List to the first one titled F2f philosophy. It does a wonderful job of explaining why what you're experiencing happens to people and how to combat it. The site also provides helpful calculators (BF%, BMR, how many calories you should be eating, etc.). So go check it out, you'll be glad you did! I know I am.0

I definitely will check out Fat2Fit~! Thanks for posting!0

there's a diet for everyone...if you wanna eat paleo....have at it. I, for one, like my treats and refined sugars so that whole moderation thing will work for me for life.
Not gonna argue with vegan boy about his claims. Don't really care. You wanna keep the weight off? You need to learn how to eat and not deprive yourself of things you enjoy while moving your booty a bit more. Period, the end.0 -

Don't put words in my mouth - I never said anything about eating a HIGH fat diet. Just that low-fat is not good. Your brain needs good fat. Clearly yours isn't getting enough of it. Try eating some more. :flowerforyou:0 -

When it comes to "weight loss" eating less and exercise is all that matters. I'm not arguing against eating lean and green. Just stating that the above is misinformation.0 -
Uhm, yes, this is 2012 facts. Ever been to Asia? They eat high carb, low fat diets, and are super skinny. It's not the genetics either, because when Asians move to America and start eating our high fat diet, they get fat and they assume the disease risks of their new home. There is adequate protein in fruits, vegetables. legumes and whole grains. Moderation or portion control is not necessary when you are eating the right foods. Your body's own satiation mechanism is enough to guide you to the appropriate amount of calories to eat. It's only when we eat concentrated high calorie density foods that were never found in nature that we run into problems.
A lot of it is the AMOUNT of food they're eating.0 -
If you want to live at a healthy weight effortlessly, make your diet revolve around the fruit and vag, and everything else be careful with.

This.
If I went off MFP calculations I would starve to death , they give me no more than 1240 calories (MAX) and even on my days where I don't exersize that leaves me feeling very unsatisfied. I tried every fricken weight loss thing in the automatic calculations so do not take their calculations as the end all. As for the Protein goal... I laugh at that and go over every single day because I am too lazy to change my macros.0 -

But if you eat high calorie density food you will still lose weight if you stay within your goals...If you eat low calorie density foods you are actually eating MOAR food!!!0 -
[/quote]How is it misinformation? You can only eat a finite amount of food per day. The foods that i just recommended eating are the foods that have the lowest calorie density of all the foods out there. (plus, the highest nutrient density) If you eat low calorie density foods, instead of high calorie density foods, YOU ARE EATING LESS!!!
If you are eating 1,200 calories of low calorie density food or 1,200 calories of High calorie density foods, you're still eating the same amount numbers wise... so how would you be in fact eating less? If anything you would need to eat more low calorie food to get the numbers where they need to be.
In all honesty- if YOU personally want to eat just fruits and vegs and low fat- that fantastic. BUT as someone else stated, that is not the only way that someone can maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Take me for example- Lost 22 lbs eating refined sugar, carbs, high fat, low fat ect. ect. All my blood levels, cholesterol, blood pressure are fantastic. I ate what I wanted, in moderation and exercised. I am healthy and happy and I did what worked for me.
So more power to you my friend- but it is misleading if you are putting something out there as FACT when its actually just your opinion.0 -

Since the ultimate goal of this thread is to help the OP with her issue, i think we should find some common ground. Can we agree that fruits and vegetables are good, and that highly concentrated foods should be limited? Haha, i'll probably get 20 replies of "no, eat nothing but fat" or something to that effect.0 -
and I'm having such a challenging time trying to get things to kick in again!
I'm not surprised.
Psychologically you have suffered a set back. You have to pick yourself and start from square one again. That is difficult to reconcile and you don't have that "honeymoon" period of starting something new to push you forwards. What you do have hopefully is more knowledge then you did last time.
I think once you have 3-7 days of consistent logging under your belt you will find the swing of it again. Getting back into the routine will probably be the hardest thing. Once you have conquered that you will be fine.0 -
