How to dress up a pot roast...

So all my life, I have always loved a good old-fashioned pot roast in the crockpot, but my daughter informed me last night that she thinks they are boring. I use some good seasonings, a nice piece of meat, and a few vegetables. Is there something that I could add to make it more interesting? Any suggestions?

I love you! She is 13. It's just a crock pot.
She got burned by some grease when she was young so she is scared to cook... but it is just a crock pot! :laugh:0 -
Pour a beer over it. It's fantastic!0

Maybe it's just because she's 13. Or maybe I'm not any more creative than you.
I have a thirteen year old son who thinks most of my cooking is boring. He like taco night and pizza night, and just about everything else makes him look like McKayla.

Not saying this is a solution, just a funny story......
Hubs used to complain about how blah my cooking was. My mother never spiced things up so I'm used to things tasting bland and figure if someone wants S&P they can add it after I serve them. However, he got on my nerves one day when I was making a beef stew and figured if he wanted spice, I'd add some cayenne pepper. I shook a bunch in and basically ruined the whole thing - it was way too hot to eat! LOL!!
The only thing I can think of is to try using a mixture of a can of cream of mushroom (or cream of anything) soup and an envelope of dry onion soup mix. Great flavor and makes kind of a gravy sauce as it cooks that you can serve over the meat and veggies.0 -

I have not tried this recipe yet, but this is exactly how I would do it and I would trust Ree Drummond with my life.0 -

1 pot roast
1 8oz cup of black coffee
1 pack of lipton onion soup mix
fill with water the rest of the way
Combine, put on low heat for about 8 hrs. Doesn't taste like coffee at all! Very tender and savory! Enjoy!0 -

Yeah, I was thinking that sounded pretty good. Maybe with a little soy sauce too. My mom used to make chicken wings in a similar sauce.0 -
Pot roast is pot roast, and it's not the most super exciting meal. However, it IS super delicious and comforting.
I use dark beer or red wine, and rosemary and thyme. plenty of salt and pepper. Maybe try switching up the veggies--add parsnips to the usual carrots and potatoes. Hmmm...I see a pot roast in my weekend...
Also, try thickening the juice when it's done and serve with mashed potatoes instead of roasting potatoes with the meat...0 -
I use a cup of strong coffee in mine instead of water or stock.
To.....Die.......For0 -
I think that was just her way of being 13... unless you are serving pot roast every night, she can deal with it. There are worse things in the world than boring food. If she's really bored, she could always try vegemite (sorry Aussies).0

1 3lb roast. 2 packets of Au Jus mix. Fill the crockpot with water until its almost covering the roast. Pour in the 2 Au Jus packets. Turn it on Low when you go to work and when you get home its done. Very rich and delicious.0

Not sure if everyone's family does this, as my Italian husband had never heard such a thing, but we've always dipped it in ketchup. It seems like such an awful thing to do with a lovely roast that has been permeating the air (often for HOURS), creating a warm and invting feeling and, to me, the memory of being at my Grandmothers house on a Sunday. I do not like ketchup much, yet this is still one thing I will use it on. And, my husband? He does it, too.0

The thought of water covering the meat makes me sick... you don't have to put all that liquid in your crock, people!! Your meat will taste just as delicious and be just as tender with a small amount of liquid on low for 8hrs.
Boiled meat is gross.0 -
but to be serious...a can of crushed pineapple, some soy sauce, and a bit of orange juice...

^^^I would try this^^^ sounds yummy. If that doesn't do it, you may have to resort to the skittles....lolPut skittles in it.

Pot roast is my favorite thing.
I put some chopped bacon in the pan with water, and render all the fat. (the water allows you to render the fat without burning the bacon). Sear roast in bacon fat on all sides and set aside. Then sautee onion, celery, carrot and garlic. Add some tomato paste and spices and a whole bottle of Zinfandel or other red wine. Nestle the roast in it, cover and cook for 3 hours at 300.
You can do this in the crockpot, too.
Then remove roast, use a stick blender to blend the sauce smooth and strain into a pan. Turn on high and reduce until thickened and glossy. It's a messy job and sort of worky but SO GOOD.0 -

Also, try thickening the juice when it's done and serve with mashed potatoes instead of roasting potatoes with the meat...
I've used kale and pearl onions with the potatoes and carrots... I love it... her... not so much.0 -
The thought of water covering the meat makes me sick... you don't have to put all that liquid in your crock, people!! Your meat will taste just as delicious and be just as tender with a small amount of liquid on low for 8hrs.
Boiled meat is gross.
It's called 'braising'. You don't boil the water.0 -
I always use a packet of Liptons onion soup mix and a packet of mushroom gravy mix & brown gravy packets whisk all together then our on meat and cook, it will thicken slightly as it cooks, I also add carrots and potatoes then when its almost done I take about a cup or so of the juice out and wisk some milk and flour to make it thicken and add it back to the crock pot. ! YUMMY0
