I was over my calories yesterday - oops! Bit of a slip up but a fab party!
Am I better to just eat normally today (normal calorie level) or to eat less to account for yesterday?

I just looked at your diary, you weren't over by much. Just carry on as normal!0

just balance it out in todays calories, but general if you are over in 1 day it is no big deal, but if u are over by 300-500 calories yes account them in your calorie intake today and eat less
if u r over by less calories JUST IGNORE IT AND KEEP GOING0 -
I just ignore it no matter what. Trying to account for an "over" day just means you'll be starving and miserable. Not worth it. ESPECIALLY when you're only "over" a small amount, and still under your maintenance. You still lost weight, just not as much.0

to make her feel better, as i mentioned 1 day is nothing, im just suggesting if she feels so bad about it that she can account it for todays calories or even the next 5 days just to keep her mentally motivated
and im sure you have more knowledge than me in this topic that one day wont do anything to her plan0 -
Just remind yourself that a pound is 3500 calories, and carry on.0

you were 123 cals over... really?!!?!?0
-
123 over is based on my estimate but I didn't take any paper so didn't write down what I ate.
Probably missed a few things!0 -

Only 123 calories. Pfft. That's no biggie. Just eat normally. If it makes you feel better mentally, you could cut today's calories by the same amount, but there's not need for that.0

Eating less will slow down your metabolism, and have the opposite effect of what you are looking for. It can also put you into starvation mode and you will overeat again. If you want to feel better at the end of a day of going over, do an extra bit of exercise before going to bed. Jog for half an hour, do some crunches, ride a bike, etc. Just a few simple, short exercises to get your metabolism up will help you burn those extra calories for recovery while sleeping.0

Just go back to your normal diet, I don't believe compensatory behaviour is a healthy mindset to have. It's just one day, it won't affect your long term progress.0

Each person is different. I personally, like to eat less the day before and day after when going over.( We have staff potlucks and fat Fridays , so I know when I may be going over). I guess it is a mind game I play with myself.
Disclaimer : I know this is not for everyone. This works for ME .I have lost almost 60 pounds in the last 19 months slowly and safely . For the first time I am keeping it off. Please find what works for you.0 -
All this means is that, instead of 284 days* to reach your goal, it might take 284 days, 3 hours, 12 minutes, and 5 seconds.
IOW - don't sweat it.
* I have no idea what your goals are, nor how long it would take to achieve them. I'm just trying to illustrate a point.0 -

Usually I try to make up for it the next few days so I'm not miserable and hungry the next day. So if I ate 300 cals over yesterday, I'd eat 100 under for the next 3 days.
I usually do this on purpose though. I like to be more relaxed with calories on the weekends (but I'll do longer workouts) and then I'll stay under and be pretty strict during the week but with shorter workouts. It works for me but I know everyone's different.0 -
Well, MFP sets you up on a deficit, so if you go over by a little you're just eating a smaller deficit that day (unless you go over by more than 500, at which point you would have reached maintenance or even a gaining level of calories). However, since you're trying to eat at a deficit all the time, in the end it really doesn't matter so long as going over is not an everyday thing.0

NO
please go learn some basic information about your metabolism. It is not a Yo Yo and does not slow or speed up very easily.0 -
When I wanna burn extra calories I think really hard about hard things :happy:0
-
Considering you're usually under by several hundred calories (according to your diary anyway!) you don't need to eat less today.0
-
You usually net extremely low anyway - do you follow them days by eating more? Take each day as it comes and move on.0
-
You can try and "make up" for it today, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. If you cut back today, is that going to make you grumpy/miserable? Worse yet, is being low today going to make you more likely to binge later? You obviously know yourself better than anyone
I'm a bit of a mess if I'm under my daily calories by more than 200ish, so I would never dramatically cut back to recover from a bad day. I know it averages out, more or less, and try not to worry about it too much. Good luck!0 -
Make sure you get back the your normal habits. The concern is not one day, but if you back slide into old habits over a longer term.
Relax, bad day happen, just don't repeat them too often.0 -

You can keep going, or eat less, or work out harder -- whatever you want it's personal preference! For me, I like to make sure the day after is healthy and low on sodium but still at the same amount of calories I should be eating. For me, autocorrecting with extra workouts or lower calories make me crazy, but keeping sodium down makes me feel healthier and less bloated but not deprived.0

Also lot's of water makes me feel better, but that's just every day.0

Hi there, this is always a difficult one psychologically, however, realistically I think that the day after a "bad" day you should just stick to you usual goal.
I will try and pick less sugary options the following day, and eat cleaner than normal e.g. maybe no potatoes / rice / pasta and just stick to meat and veg, fruit etc. But generally I am not strick on myself, just get back on track, and I will also tend to exercise the day after a bad day as well because obviously that will make up some kcals.
We are on a restrictive calorie intake anyway in order to lose our desired goal, so we shouldn't restrict even more just because we had a bad day. Like a lot of people have already said, restricting more may make you mardy / crave more / tired, it isn't worth it, you are more likely to cave that day as well because you are restricting so much.
My advice is: there is nothing wrong with having a cheat we live once provided we are good 80% of the time it doesn't hurt to enjoy abit of what we like, remember that the daily goal rate is for you to lose although you might be over that are you over you maintenance figure because if not then it isn't a massive deal, if you are then provided you get back on track (and you were 3500 kcal + over) then you will be fine.
We can't stress about having a bit of fun and breaking the goal every once in a while, remember stress inhibits weight loss :-)
Chin up - just get back on track!!

Actually it does. Please show me where it stays the same. Your basal rate may not change, but your overall rate does. How do you think you burn calories? Why does calorie burn increase while working out? Metabolism goes up to keep up with the energy demand. What happens when you are cold? Metabolism goes up as your body makes heat to keep you warm. Muscle mass increases increase metabolism. Metabolism is always changing all day every day.0
