Weight Training Help?

Hey everyone!
I have been going to the gym with my boyfriend lately and I find it a little intimidating. He used to go with his friend, and they had a set routine they did. However, he doesn't really know what kind of weight exercises/machines that girls should use, or any techniques that would be useful to me. This was really disheartening as I would often stand in the gym looking quite lost, so I began to take group classes such as yoga and tai chi/boxing and I loved them. However, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips for females to use when weight training or any other useful gym tips, so maybe I can start mixing up my work outs, and going with my boyfriend while not looking like a lost puppy again! Thanks a lot! :)

    dumbell rows
    cable rows

    Arms
    barbell curl
    skull crushers

    rop pull downs
    preacher curls

    Legs
    Squat
    leg press
    leg curls
    leg extensions
    calf raises

    Chest
    Bench press
    Incline press

Lift like a man .... you wont get all big and muscular. I see girls lift weights daily and it's impressive !!! You can train the same as him it's yourselves that are getting in the way

I agree with the above poster. There is no difference between weight training exercises for men or women. Just make sure to use the right size weight - you should not be able to lift more than 15 times (reps) at a go (set) and you should really have to fight for that last one. If you really like group classes though many gyms have group toning classes. Body Pump is a very common one. And if you have a little extra cash a few sessions with a personal trainer to show you the ropes may help. Don't be nervous, just get in there and lift!!

I agree with everyone else here. Just cause you're a woman, does not mean you cannot lift heavy! I lift heavy myself and encourage other females to do the same. You will not get bulky by accident. Women who look like that train/diet purposely to get that way. Since you said you're new to lifting I would recommend looking into Stronglifts or Starting Strength! Both are excellent beginner weight lifting programs. :)

Yep, you can definitely do the same workout as your boyfriend. Men and women's approach to lifting really shoudln't differ that much. My very first week of strength training I did my boyfriend's workout with him. Although I will add one thing: if your boyfriend's has been lifting weights for a while you might find that his routine is a little complicated or too involved for you to do at the start. Check out some beginner programs such as new rules of lifting for women, starting strength or strong lifts for some ideas about what you should be doing to start out. My current routine is based on this http://www.stumptuous.com/workout-4.

No matter what approach you decide to take, definitely get your boyfriend to show you the ropes and check to make sure you are using the correct form.
