Hey guys,
My name is Jessica, and I have been struggling with weight loss for quite a while now!
I am 21 and have been gaining weight due to evidently poor diet, but also a couple of medications that made me gain weight.
I have major issues with avoiding carbohydrates and am a self confessed sugar addict.
I am 5'4 and am around 175 right now.
I would love to be talking to someone to help keep each other accountable and what not.
What kind of things worked best for you guys?
Thanks,
Jessica

Hi Jessica,
I've been here since April 2012 and have lost 25 lbs in 5 months - of which I just recently gained 5 back (dealing w/mom's sudden terminal illness & subsequent death followed by a home burglary). But I'm still here - I may have slowed down but I won't quit.
Firstly, I just want to say weight loss is a struggle for everyone - you are not alone in this. But each of us must decide if this "struggle" will be a challenge we willingly face or a battle we succumb to - it's up to me & my attitude. And for you, it's up to you & your attitude. Support buddies are helpful but they can't make us do anything - it's ultimately up to ourselves. Don't fall for the lie in your head that says, "it's too hard for you; others can do this but not you."
While a poor diet does have a negative effect on our health, some people actually maintain weight and even lose on poor diets. It's really simple math - more calories in with less calories out equal weight gain, and less calories in with more calories out equal weight loss. That's how MFP is really useful - it helps us track the "math" and keeps us accountable - to others but also to ourselves.
While I'm much older than you, I'm also 5'4" and 175 lbs, as well as a sugar/carb addict. Confession/admission is the first step to recovery. I'm sure I'm not saying anything new ... but sometimes we just need to hear truth over & over until we make it our own truth, our own philosophy, our own way of life.
I'm not really working my plan right now - just eating & logging because I don't want to quit but not actually "dieting" or even eating well - because of all the crap I've been dealing with right now, but I WILL get back to it. What helps me curb my carb/sugar addiction is protein - lots of protein. I'll eat low fat proteins - skinless chicken, fish, lean beef, etc - and I'll supplement with protein drinks because I get the protein without the fat.
Congratulations on reaching out - kudos for not quitting on yourself. Remember, in the struggle of weight loss, you are your own hero. I log daily - feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like0
