Question for the significant weight losing women

In total I have lost over 70 lbs in less than 20 months and 34+ lbs of that just in the last 5+ months using MFP. My menstraul cycle has become SIGNIFICANTLY heavier. Is anyone else facing that and is it normal? I am trying to wait it out to see if it gets better. Thoughts? Thanks!

Mine is about the same (heavy) though it now wants to show up 4-5 days ahead of schedule (past 3 cycles).0

I had an IUD until just recently, so I wasn't having periods. I do think I've read that when you're losing, you're releasing a lot of hormones (and toxins) which have been stored in your fat cells for who-knows-how-long, and that it can affect your cycle. When you're at goal and maintaining, it should improve.
That being said, I'd say you should probably follow up with your OB-Gyn just to verify everything's okay.0 -
I'm having the opposite issue. Haven't had a period in three months >_<
And no...I'm not prego. lol0 -

I'm not sure if I've lost enough weight to qualify. Significant is pretty subjective, though. I've already posted my "expert opinion" on another thread but I'll leave it here for you, too. I'm a helper.
So, in conclusion, the only thing to do is become a llama.0 -
Has it happened every month or just the past couple months? Is it really painful? Do you feel dizzy? If so, you might want to talk to your gynecologist. They might prescribe a light-dosage BCP to help it out.
My cycle just became regular again (due to weight loss and exercise, I'm sure). I used to go 6-8 months without it, but I've had one the past four months. It was pretty heavy at first, but now it's only heavy one day out of the week. I have no idea why one might get heavier over time instead of lighter.0 -
mine have been just the opposite. They have gotten lighter instead of heavier as well as shorter. Cramping has also gotten better
You may want to consult your OBGYN0 -

I've lost 75lbs and around the 60lb mark, mine became extremely unpredictable. Sometimes early (by like 10 days), sometimes late, sometimes excruciating, sometimes barely noticable, sometimes it's crazy-heavy, sometimes just normal-heavy, never had a non-heavy period in my life though. So...idk if it's related to weight loss, stress, or my girl parts just staging a mutiny of some sort...0

Mine were the opposite, also. I even lost my periods for awhile after some weight loss.0 -
losing weight allows for more estrogen to be released.... in short, losing a significant amount of weight can do a LOT of weird things to your period as well as your hormones.... the biggest issue, IMO, is that it can make you EXTREMELY fertile....
Mine has always pretty much been like clockwork, but Ive noticed in the last 3 months, its moved up a week... still every 28 days but instead of coming the last week of the month, now its the 3rd week...Guess who is PMSing today?? Grrrrr!!0 -
changes in cycle are commonplace with weight loss and gain. that being said, if it's enough to make you uncomfortable, see a doctor. even if it's a normal occurrence due to your body trying to figure out how to regulate your hormones at your new size, heavy periods can be so disruptive and exhausting, and often going on a birth control prescription can help to ease the symptoms.0

I've lost 69, but mine have been getting heavy for the last few years. Around the 50 pound lost mark, mine started shifting days (sometimes early, others nearly 10 days late). My nurse friend told me I could expect it and if I was worried visit the gyno....
Which is hard as I have a phobia of doctors.... so I now take several herbs to "help" - they do some (raspberry leaves, yarrow, dandelion root).
But if you are worried, see a doctor. Best way to tell if anything is really wrong.0 -
It could be down to something like fibroids which are affected by hormones. Your body has been through a lot this year and it's probably going to be a good 6 months before you can tell what is your new 'regular'. Plenty of iron rich foods needed though to avoid deficiency.0

My flow hasn't changed but I'm cramping a lot more now that I have lose weight. Can't wait for menopause and it to go away!0

Mine has actually been lighter with lighter cramping.0

Thanks everyone. I called and was seen today. Follow up testing scheduled as it should be getting lighter with weight loss. Bloodwork too. MFP is the best community ever!!!!!0
-
Mine is about the same as far as flow is concerned but it is sometimes a few days early or sometimes a few days late. I attribute this to age, though, I turned 40 in January.0

Significantly heavier for me as well.
(I lost 100lbs before mfp, don't worry, I don't class 6lbs as significant so pay no attention to my ticker this time!)0 -

If I knew what noise a llama makes I would be doing it right now.

When I was heavy I usually only had a period every 4 months, then went 10 without one. I figured I was going through menopause since I was in my 50's. I lost the bulk of my weight (almost 70 pounds) & not only did my periods return, I was regular as clockwork again, right up until I REALLY went into menopause when I was 56.0

Mine is actually lighter and less horror movie-like. Oh, and I don't want to kill people.0

AGREEEEEEEE this is the story of our lives0 -
Let's see...mine is a rollercoaster and its very unpredictable even though i'm on birth control. I've considered going on the shot in order to make things more normal but someone i know had it and gained a looot of weight. And for obvious reasons, i can't bring myself to do that.
So my whole life, I would go years without a period. I went months to a year without one and then when I would get one, it would be violent and horrid. I lost 35 pounds and in May had a miscarriage. I have lost 15 more pounds and since then my periods have been strange. They aren't heavy or painful, but they go on forever. Right now, I am on day 12 of a period with a moderate flow. I'm not sure if that is due to the pill, the weight loss, or the miscarriage.0 -

OMG I would go crazy if I somehow ended up being pregnant! Thank goodness the hubs had a V about 20 yrs ago !
*note to self* lets get him tested to make sure the little swimmers are still not getting thru!0 -
Mine is now coming every 24 days now, when it used to be absolutely unpredictable, and the flow impossible to manage.
The flow now varied from month to month. One month i get one full of cramps and clots lasting 8 days, and another month it's quite light and lasts 5 days max.
I noticed this after losing 75 lbs, and the situation hasn't changed now that i lost 95,2 lbs.0
