Low/no carb diet

Hi
My mum has just been told she has to go on a low/no carb diet and I have joined her up for MFP.
She is in her late 40s and she has 2 daughters, me and my little sister Emma (18 and 14)
If anyone wants to be friends with her (especially if you have been on/are on this kind of diet) let me know

Maybe it's the doctor who recommended it, and maybe it's a short term goal to detox her or something? Who are we to impose or diet beliefs on someone else? This is a site to support everyone in their health and fitness goals.
To the OP (Original Poster) let your mom know to add me; I'll help support her in her health goal.0 -

I have done low carb in the past. It can be pretty intense. Study up on low glycemic index foods. Start by eliminating anything white as in potatoe, white rice, pasta. Some Caribs are really really good for you like veggies and fruits. Would br glad to friend her.0

wondering how no carbs would work. that would men no fruits or vegetables. unless your mom is a housecat, i seriously doubt a no carb diet is healthy0

To the OP, if your mum has been prescribed by a doc to go low carb, I'm sure there is a reason. Cutting down on processed carbs would be good for most peoples health, but make sure she checks out exactly what this 'prescription' means. Carbs in the form of sweet potatoes, potatoes and other veggies, as well as whole grains (this is debated hotly elsewhere) should be included in her diet for fibre and important nutrients. I hope your mum gets the help she needs.0

If the reason for her trying no carb is because she finds herself addicted to carbs/sugar or never feels full, maybe she should try cutting back on sugar instead of cutting carbs altogether?
You'd be surprised how many things have hidden sugars!!0 -
If its short term (1-2 weeks) it's great to kick start your weight loss
-as I did it in the beginning of the month and lost 5lbs-
However please keep in mind our bodies do require Carbohydrates in order to function at its optimal level
Fruits vegetables Whole Grains ...
Nevertheless it's always a huge benefit to eliminate all "Whites" -- White Rice White Pasta Sugar Flour ... --
from your daily food intake
As we consume these "White" foods our bodies turn them into sugar ... Which as we all know is not good for our health
In conclusion if a Low Carb is done on a long term basis
**It is very unhealthy for the Brain
-- the Brain is unable to function at it's optimal level which in turn affects your nerves = mental health issues
**Mood Swings
**Irritability
**Depression
**Food Binges
**Lack of Energy
**Nutrient Deficiency
The list goes on .................
If she's planning to do this and is adamant about it short term would be best
But she can also do this the Healthy Way by just eliminating all the "White Foods"
-as suggested above- all junk/fast foods sodas juices -high in sugar-
and to eliminate or limit all processed foods
Good Luck on your Weight Loss Journey!0 -
Who told her she needs to go on a low/no carb diet and what was the reason?
I'm assuming its due to type 2 diabetes. That is why my father was told to watch his daily carbs.0 -

I am a type 2 diabetic (diagnosed in 2009) and immediately started working with an endo doctor who put me in touch with a nutritionist which never once told me anything to do about low carb/ no carb diets. She set my carb intake at 240 grams a day and I lost a few pounds over the last few years and am currently consuming over 300 grams of carbs daily and my A1c's have been averaging 5.3 for the past 18 months... Not all diabetics have a problem with carbs, exercising, eating healthier goes a very long way...0 -
Which is it - no-carb or low-carb?
No-carb is really really difficult, as it's missing out one whole food group, and one which is essential long term for the body to survive. The diet would consist of meat and dairy, nothing else. Even extreme diets like Atkins have some carb intake (20g from memory, in the start phase)
Low-carb is much more feasible, but you need to define what constitutes "low". For myself, I've found that around 100g per day is doable, allows me to get in fruits and veggies, but keeps the carb cravings in check.0 -
To those 'experts' out there who love to think they know everything. She has been put on this diet by an actual doctor because her body does not process carbs properly and it ends up as sugar in her bloodstream... this is the simplistic version I got told. I have no idea what the real terms for this are but if you would like to take this up with a medical professional feel free.
I will send her user name to those who want it Thankyou0 -

Nice attitude....maybe that information would have been pertinent in the first place.0 -

The OP didn't ask for opinions, so no.
I follow Atkins, which is low carb, am on later rungs and keep carbs about 15 - 20% as of now. She's welcome to add me if she likes.0 -

And I agree with them.
1. Your body needs carbs to run properly
2. The minute she eats a piece of bread she'll gain that weight right back (obviously not that drastic but I think you understand what I'm saying)0 -

Tell her to add me. I do around 100gms of carbs a day of fruit and verges and not only have lost body fat but I also no longer have migraines, mood swings, I'm less irritable, my mental health is excellent and I'm a darn sight more energetic. (I run half marathons once a week no sweat). I guess you could say I've turned into an athlete.
Yeah so ignore those who are really negative about low carb, it is completely achievable and you can feel fantastic on it and be completely satisfied.0 -

Her medical history is really none of your business. I don't ask for wether she should be on the diet. She has been told to be on the diet an I was simply asking for people who had a similar experience.0
