Can someone explain the TDEE to me? Im so confused.
I'm 5'8, 19yr, and 163lbs
I exercise 5 days a week
This Site http://thefitgirls.com/tdee-calculator.aspx Says my TDEE is almost 2500cal.
I'm still confused about what the TDEE is and how it works.
I'm sure this question has been asked and answered many times before, but I'm confused and a little misinformed.
Thanks.

  • I'm sure someone can come along and give a more scientific and better answer than I can, but your TDEE is basically the calories needed to maintain the weight you are at now, so if all the information is correct, you would need to cut your calories to 2000 to lose 1 lb a week.

Don't worry with being confused though, it is a little at first =)

BMR means basal metabolic rate. This is the amount of calories they would feed you in a coma for basic organ function.

TDEE means total daily energy expenditure. This is your BMR plus all of the calories you need during the day for everything you do, all your activities, work, exercise, etc. This is the number where you would not gain or lose any weight, also known as maintenance calories.

Total Daily Energy Expenditure-- that's the total number of calories that you burn throughout the day. You can see yours by going to your Goals page. MFP uses your TDEE to find your calorie goal by subtracting whatever your deficit will be from your TDEE. Example, my TDEE is 1630. If I eat 1630 calories I maintain my weight. If I tell MFP that I want to lose half a pound a week then it'll take the number of calories it would take to make that happen (250 calories per day) and subtract it from my TDEE, and that's how many calories I would eat. My daily goal would be 1380.
